Headlight issue

Both dipped and full bean used to be fine on my wifes 2000 A6 Avant, normal bulbs, but of late they are just plain *****.

I am convinced they are not working properly. Can someone confirm the various stages of brightness.

On dipped beam with the ignition off get just side lights.
On dipped beam with the ignition on get dipped light, this is where I seem to recall the lights got brighter when the engine was started, can someone confirm/deny this because they don't now and its like driving around without them being on.

depends on condition of youralternator/battery, these road conditions don't help as black wet roads reflect no light and so look like theyre not on.

Check your bulbs if ur worried, i once got a cheap set of bulbs and they were black inside after a few weeks, completly useless!
 
after buying my 99 A6 saloon recently I thought the headlights were rubbish, but maybe it just needs new bulbs then? I recently replaced the battery and that hasn't made a difference. Trouble is, I've never owned an Audi before so not sure if its normal or not!
 
I think most people find that the lights are a bit shabby on the older models - I upgraded mine with some of those HID's - Has to be the best nifty I have spent on my car!

so how easy are the HIDs to fit then, and how expensive? I might well consider sorting these out if its not too much of a hassle...
 
Im not at all skilled in this department and it only took me half an hour!

I ended up sticking a ballast on to my ABS Pump and the other on my air filter!

However I do have a ballast that is slightly quirky, it needs a few switches for the gas to ignite.
