Well driving to work today, when my steering goes heavy, batt light comes on.., so pulls over pops the bonnet, the serpentine belt has sheared!! Eeek , no worries.. so gets a tow to the garage, (very hairy as had no brakes or power steering!!) so left it with garage, gets a call an hour ago.. bad news!! the belt has sheared and got caught somehow into the drive belt, jumped a few cogs and of course, shagged me valves and camshaft!!
cars a 1999 tdi avant, i only got the cambelt done recently too!!

so when i get it home(somehow) its going on E-bay as an non runner, cars in tip top nick apart from that, new tyres, 18" polished A8 rims, new battery, control arms, discs and pads all round..

so any offers?? lol..:bye:

Sorry to hear that, and scared now as I am doing my cambelt (finally) tomorrow and really don't want to hear the clatter of valves on pistons....

Good luck on selling...... or breaking?!

good luck with your cam belt!!

no would rather sell complete if possible..

Sad to hear that buddy.

Wouldn't you rather get it fixed? I've replaced so many bent valves in the past, it's as easy to me as replacing your water pump.

I'd like to save that B5, if I could.
If you're still determined to sell her, please PM me, I might be interested.

so many options before you dump it as a non runner.
even an engine swap.

i would love to keep her as she is a great runner,in great nick and looks smart too, i've prob spent nearly £1500(inc labour) on her in the last year.... there was only the engine left to go i think and now thats happened i feel someones trying to tell me something!! i've had it for 2 years now and was thinking of getting rid in the new year anyway, so for me to shell out roughly a grand on a car thats prob only worth £3k at best isn't worth the hassle i feel.
I'm still in shock it's happened, i thought £300 tops for new belt and labour charges!!

i just done a engine change on my 1.8t for less than £500 inc buying the engine. There are lots of people on here that would be up for getting there hands dirty. Byzan and andy B off this forum helped me do my car and i had to litterally hide money in there cars as "a thanks for helping" as they just love gettin messy!!! lol

This forums good like that. dont give up on it mate, i nearly did with mine and im so glad i didnt :)

dont get mugged off by people tryin to make money out of your miss fortune. dont give up on the car mate, im so glad i didnt!

cars a 1999 tdi avant, i only got the cambelt done recently too!!

sorry to hear about this
Not too sure how the tdi set up is, does the water pump tensioners etc all drive through the cambelt?
when you got the cambelt done did you get all the bits changed?

ive seen it happen before on other engines, the flappy bits of the disintegrated belt wind themselves around the crank pulley and eventually get tangled up into the timing belt sprocket.

Well went to the garage to have a look at her and yes indeedy the valves are all bent, cam lobes all worn and she was parked in 'the garage of death' next to a hearse!!, so not a good sign. mechanic basically said we can do the head and new belts etc at £6-700 plus labour, but you may also have piston and conrod damage too, and that they cant check till the engines stripped down so more money, and i'm not really prepared to chuck money at her like that, so at best a new head all in at say £1k or new engine all in and whatever else they find wrong, could be nearer £2k.
cars only worth about that anyway, so im afraid i'm going to cut my losses and sell her as a non runner, cant afford to keep chucking money at her like that.

so heres the lowdown..

1999 facelift 1.9 tdi (facelift model) in laurel green metallic
136,000 miles
mot till jan
i'm having the tax !! lol..
and if you read the first post you will see all the new parts replaced in the last 6-12 months..(serviced myself a couple of months ago, all new filters replaced and the glow plugs too)

so looking for at least £500 or £700 with the 18"s on (they do need a refurb tho)

any questions please feel free to pm me or email at livlee10@hotmail.com

and im based just out side harlow in essex..

cheers all..

Down the M11 / A414 then.

Could you PM me some pictures?

I must say though, your garage seems intent on scaring the hell out of you.
The crank, conrods and pistons will be ok, so will the head.

At the very most, valves, belts, gasket and labour.
About £450 - £500 all in.

Worn camshaft lobes?
These don't wear out due to belt snappage. If they're lightly marked, it was running fine till the belt went, and still will when belt, valves and headgasket are replaced.

Hi Siena..

I think they were scaring me off TBH, they reckon with the age of the car it's not worth doing really!! cant see the pistons being damaged that badly from just hitting the valves, but i'm no expert!! And the cam shaft was marked up quite badly!
You're more than welcome to have a look at the car, i've got no pics of the damage to the head, just a few shots of the car from the outside.
If you PM me your e mail i'll send you a few pics of her, if the head can be rebuilt for £500 all in then i'll keep her, but i'm just very worried something else is going to go kaput!!

Seriously, you must get her fixed. Bet you anything that with a rebuilt engine it'll have such a great new lease of life that you'll be more interested and enjoy her more than ever. And never want to get rid.

My cambelt swap is now complete btw, but haven't started the engine yet... still slightly scared.

lol i know the feeling.

It did all go wrong once for me with my old astra. I'd rebuild the engine completely, new rings and bearings, reground all the valves new cam etc, and it started first time. Unfortunately i put the timing belt on too tight, the oil pump i had was from an older engine and didnt have the mounting points for the newer style tensioner, so the belt was tensioned with the water pump.

So i stripped the aux belt off and removed the crank pulley, loosened the water pump off a little and decided to start it up to make sure it wasnt singing like a piano string any more. Started fine and ticked over nicely, revved it a few times and it sounded good, then i heard a clunk and it stopped.

Looked into the engine bay and the timing belt is dangling limply in the casing, and the crank sprockets laying on the floor. Stupid me hadnt refitted the crank pulley, as i wanted to make sure the belt was ok before putting it all back together, but the crank pulley bolt holds the crank sprocket on...

I was envisaging bent valves and such, however i refitted the belt and it started and ran just fine. Must have been really lucky, as they are interference engines, especially as it had a hot cam in it!

Glad that worked out for you! I'm terrified of opening the engine up and seing 20 bent vaves staring up at me.....

My biggest fear is the cambelt tensioner, which is a later type than the original one. But it seems to be tensioning the belt just fine.

I think the main difference between myself and a trained mechanic, apart form the years of learning and my lack of instincts, is that mechanics seem to show no fear and are not afraid to hit stuff hard with big hammers. I get The Fear, big style.

i know what u mean about the fear factor, i attempted my control arms a few months ago, got the pinch bolt nut off ok but the bolt was seized solid, gave it a few taps with a mallet but nowt, was too scared to smack it one, so like a pussy i took it to the garage and let them do it!! even they struggled took em 6 hrs to do the whole lot!! hence huge labour bill.

Anyway regards my avant, garage are trying to fob me off big time, so i'm not letting them touch it, Siena has very kindly offered to rebuild the head etc:salute:, so im going to get some pics of the damage for him later so he knows whats what. I'll keep u informed..

You'll find a fair few garages get scared of commiting to engine rebuild jobs, mostly due to the time involved in doing it, but also because they know if it all goes wrong 100 miles down the road, they've got a big bill and an angry customer on their hands, so they up the fear factor, and price it right up, and if the customer still wants it done, at least their making good money on it.

Tuffty... i just notice you have a mk1 astra GTE turbo! you da ****** man!! :)

So he does, dont use Migweb perchance do ya?

Used it myself in my vauxhall owning days and ive seen quite a few people from Mig around AS too.

Big big thanks to Siena, who for the past day and half has repaired my cylinder head and replaced all the gaskets, belts etc..we were still out till 10 last night and the thing wouldnt start!! (problems with the lifters, i'm sure he'll explain more later!!):ermm:
So Siena came back next morning (today) and after giving her a tow start, she purred back into life.So def going to keep her now, again thanks Siena you've made me a happy bunny!.
