170TDI - too much torque for 2wd? Opinions please

Whats been your final choice dave? I've just spent the last couple of weeks thinking (far too much!) and think I will be going for a 170 CR Sline in Misano. Sensible head on tempting me with the 170 derv, rather than the 2.0 TFSI engine.

The alternative was the A3 2.0T petrol or the Scirocco but even though the Roc is cheaper on list, the lease co want more for the Roc. Then when you factor in tax plus fuel & it feels the sensible choice! Like the Sline alloys and look, and had a good 3 years already with an A3.

I think I'm opting for the 140 TDI S-line. Had a quote last week and just waiting on a p/x value for my current car.

I was / am tempted by the 170 but there's too many things making me think that the 140 will be more suitable for me - price, cheaper insurance, better mpg, better for "her-indoors" to drive and, to be honest, my days of traffic light GP are behind me now!! I'd possibly have had to sacrifice options for the 170 and it didn't seem a worthwhile trade off.

The dealer put me off the 170 too. He said that a 170 would return around 38mpg as a realistic figure whereas the 140 would be around 50mpg and the difference between the two engines is minimal.

From what I've been reading I wouldn't necessarily agree with the dealer - they won't know any real information on the new CR 170, only the older engine. I know those in the TT are getting great mpg, about 50mpg and the engines are not fully broken in yet. Agreed the TT is lighter but it does have quattro. I have hopes for getting close to the quoted 53mpg.

Its a battle of compromises this getting a car business, isn't it! There's some excellent mpg being seen for the 140 diesel new engine - I've had one of the old 140s for the last 3 yrs and just fancy a few more ponies!

My uncle has the 170bhp (in an A4) when he first got it he thought the wheelspin was a bit too much in both dry and wet but when he was getting his service they (Audi Garage) said to him that there was an ECU update and ever since that he felt the car is much better to drive and he felt less tiring. I aslo heard that the orginal 170bhp had too much power/torque up to about 2 or 3000rpm (not too certain) and the ECU update might have been to sort that out. But he got the car when it was first introduced in '06. Things might have changed with the newer versions of the engine.

I think the dealer is being very pessimistic on the mpg for the 170 and very optimistic for the 140. Personally I get around 43mpg out of my current 170 and I used to get around 48mpg out of my 140. Both with exactly the same driving and driver!! Having owned both, the 170 is a much smoother and quieter than the 140 and both with now be even quieter with the new common-rail versions. I have driven a new CR-140 but am still waiting for the dealer to get a CR-170 for me to drive. Either one will be a great car but personally I thing for only around £930 I would definitely go for the 170.

Dave, pack it in! :) I know it's only £900 more but then there's the extra insurance and the budget has to stop at some point. I'd rather have a little less power but a higher spec nowadays.

I must admit, I thought the figure was a little low for the 170mpg. The 140 mpg is realistic though. I know Sem's getting low 50's in his new 140 CR TDI and it's not run in yet. That's town driving too so a decent run should give some better results.

I agree with you about the power to higher spec argument. I thing if my budget was fixed I would tend to go for the 140 with goodies compared to a 170 without. Both are great cars and I'm sure you will be happy with either. The new CR engines are supposed to give better fuel consumption that the current ones. What I'm really waiting for now is the opportunity to drive both a 140 and a 170 with S-tronic. Only then will I be able to decide which I will go for in 9-12 months time.

Safe to assume you've driven both, right? The torque on the 170 is great, but the TFSI is an animal.... 2500 upwards and she sings

Not had chance with the new CR170 but driven the TFSI in both the A3 facelift and the Scirocco. A great engine.
