Hi all, considering a S3 just wondered if the tax was same as the mk5 gti ?, also what sort of mpg do you get from them ?, oh and when did the 5 doors start coming out.

I went from a remapped MK5 Gti (250bhp-ish) to my current S3 which is also remapped (310bhp-ish).
I do a lot of rush hr driving and like the odd `spirited drive`so my mpg is fairly heavy I would say.
My Golf would return around 24-25mpg and the S3 around 22mpg under comparitive driving conditions.
Both cars always ran on Shell VPower.
Just taxed mine 2 weeks ago and paid approx £110 for 6months.
the 5 door (or Sportback as its called) came out last month in the UK.
The Golf is great car as you know, but the S3 is brilliant, go for it you wont regret it.

The emissions are 217 G/km,so that worked out at £205 for the year when i taxed it last,and i'm getting about 30/gallon,so @360 per tank,and that's with a remap,TBE and intake,so i'm probably putting out about 330bhp... if i'm really booting it,i still get 300/tank.

New S3's have some tweaks to the engine management and are now below 200g/km so a tax band down on the old one which is 217g/km. I'm guessing it's higher than a GTi due to the extra weight and drag of the 4WD system.
MPG - from new they are a real beatch - mine struggled to get over 28mpg on a long motorway run at about 85. However, over 10k miles and the MPG has improved drastically and I know see around 32mpg on a long motorway run.
They aren't very good on short runs though!

thank everyone, @ Stu hi mate , well always wanted the S3 before i got the edition 30 but there wasn't 5 door option when i got it, but then they go and release one LOL
Pretty robust TBH. Though there are a few people that have had issues.
Injectors on the pre facelift are a bit of a known issue, only seem to make themselves known after a remap as the injectors are clearly working a bit harder. Materialises as a miss fire, vut even without remap if you do logs with Vag Com the misfires are there, just harder to feel them. I believe the injectors are upgraded for the facelift.
Fuel pumps were upgraded recently from the H to J version (I think that's the right way round). Again on facelift versions they should have the new version.
