My A3 - new mods!

I have been toying with the idea of de-chroming the front grills but I was never sure it would work with it being a twin grill (unlike the newer versions of A3) and the colour of the car

However, I bit the bullet, ordered some matt black vinyl and started to work last night around 10pm or so and finished at 2am

My Black Wow trim detailer arrived during the week so I slapped some of that on (

by the way) and fitted the grills this morning!

Treated the car to a good wash and detailed the rest of the trim.

As some of you know, I was looking to purchase an S-line rear bumper. Fortunately I was recently able to do this so got this done last week

One more trick mod I added was to fit OEM Audi wheel nut covers - I think this compliments the wheels and makes them look a lot nicer and finishes them off

And one more for good luck!!

I was in the middle of a good polishing/buffing session then the ****** rain kicked in yo

but next on the cards it to fit my OEM Light pack and replace the door card arm rest. I am still waiting on more Lamin-x to arrive from the States so I can do my foglights and might contemplate getting smoked indicators or Lamin-x them

love it mate. love the grill. looks much better. 1 thing IMO that needs to go....the mudflaps.

Car looks lovely mate - keeps getting better and better

looks good mate, one thing which i was wondering that you fitted the sline bumper trim, is there a difference between your old one and the sline one, i know the sline has the matt black finish, (which i read you your other tread that the bodyshop sprayed it all blue on yours), but is there a difference between the shape? does the sline hang much lower than the older one?

Thanks for the comments guys

Khalil - the bumper is the same shape and sits at the same height - the only differences are the lower spoiler and the fact that there is no bump strip like in the sport, its totally smooth!

looks awesome, me looking into the same sort of thing, so have you changed the whole back end or just the bottom lip??

looks good boydie. i know you had them on before, but i'm not sure the mudflaps suit the s-line bumper. if you want to keep them you might consider getting them colour coded maybe?

Not sure lad - in my opinion, the mudflaps serve a purpose but will try them out without them and see what they look like

thanks for the comments!

the grill loooks goood!... :beerchug:

can i ask, where did you order the vinyl from? and how much did u need?? also was there any particular way you stuck it on?

thanks

Just got the vinyl from a local guy and its very cheap - got something like 2x2m for £5 lol

I just cut it to a rough shape and stretched it over the grill and cut it for the corners

thanks lad

Look good boydie, Must say i do really like your car and good private plate aswell:thumbsup:
I actually want to do it myself but im quite sh*t this mods like this! (well never done one) Only mod i've ever done was take my front bumper off my 52plate corsa and stick angel lights and take the old ones out lol

Must say the vinyl looks really good - Had my two piece grill (on a 53 plate 8p) painted matt black but its prone to stone chips! were both parts of the grill easy to take out or did you do it all with them on the car? did you have any problems with it around the corners?

Looks spot on mate. Exactley how I like to mod my cars, lowered, nice set of rims and some subtle tweaks. A perfect example of how less is often more

Thanks guys for the comments lol

The vinyling is easy enough done, you do have to trim the corners in a certain way to make sure they get round easy enough but there were areas where this was not possible so I added separate bits of vinyl but you cannot see these fortuantely

The removal was ok too - the lower one is easiest and the top one is quite niggly - there are so many clips and I do not know why!!

Really nice moddin' there boydie...looks stealth now with smoked headlights and black out grilles!

The tinted side repeaters and foglights will complete it to a 100%.

But I must agree with some of the others; loose the flaps

car is looking good mate...
get some of these just to finish off the look of the CH's
i bought a few sets and they do look good!!

Mate - I have been through two sets of them :( the wee scums bags steal them for their bicycles lol

I have BBS fake valve caps though which are antitheft!

Thanks for the comments guys....wasted in NI??? no way lad, the car scene over here is awesome

You should check out our local sites - the main one I belong to is www.reallymeansounds.com

Enjoy :rockwoot:

Looking good mate :respekt:

That is one of my main bug bears with my A3 I can't stand the chrome bits on the grills.

So looks like I will be on the lookout for some black vinyl.

Thanks Mate - and you are trusting my memory to remind me to remind you - LOL.

So I will now ask Kate to remind me to remind you.

See you then.

Well thanks a lot Boydie thats really put the cat amongst the pidgeons for me. Thought i knew what i wanted and now you do this to me :). Stunning car mate not sure i want to change the bumper now to new style. What front splitter is that?

Give yourself a pat on the back mate.

question time.

how did you do it?

and where did you get the vinyl from?

Thanks guys!

Frogr - The front spoiler is an audi part - its part of the votex kit and its quite expensive :( around £340 from audi - mine cost £70 from ebay off a salvage car! took me ages to find

Kettle - cut the vinyl to a rough shape and stretch it round the edges - easy enough but just a bit tedious lol you can get the vinyl from any sign makers!

Looks good, especially like the matt black grill.
I have a 'full grill' 05 A3; how difficult is it to remove this grill and why apply vinyl rather than painting?
Is it because it is less vulnerable than paint?
Finally how much would it cost to buy one of the Optik(?) black grill and what parts are required to change over from the chrome oem?
Cheers
Russ

My OEM grills are painted Matt Black but it is prone to stone chips! Vinyl sounds like a good idea or even Solar Film that is used on radio controlled aircraft etc.. it is like a heat shrink version of Vinyl.. just dont know if it comes in matt black - My local sign makers reckons not many sign makers would use matt black, so may be a special order - Is yours def Matt black Boydie (as it looks like) and if so did they have to order it???

No mate the car doesnt have spacers but I do not think it does - the offset is 100% correct but will give it a think!

Stevie - its definately matt black and was bought from a sign maker who had it in stock!

Cheers Boydie, i will shop around today and maybe try having a look at solar film too.

Top job boydie.
I'm keen to do this also - Just wondering how exactly is the grill removed?
Is the chrome piece seperate from the black plastic of the grill?

The whole grill is easy to remove, there are 3 torque screws at the top, reach in behind and lift the clips at the bottom of the top grill and it should then wiggle off - do not be afraid to apply some force

The chrome bit is a bit of a niggly *******....there are so many clips that hold it on and you have to pry each off one at a time - make sure you have a look to see where they all are...I am taking mine off again to do the rings so I will take a pic of the underside and mark where they are!

Thanks for the comments!
