I have an October 2006 A4 Avant 2.0T S-Line SE (220BHP model)purchased from new. The front tyres (235/40 R18 Conti's) are nearly down to the tread wear indicator after just 9,500 miles. Is this usual? I'm not a hard driver and treat the tyres with respect and check the presures once a week.
Your comments/advice please.

Our 2004 B6 1.9 130 Sport was down to 4mm on the fronts after 8k. I was shocked but it seems to be a common problem on the TDIs due to the big lump of torque that comes in at 1900. Not sure why you'd be getting the same sort of problem on a petrol car but of course you've got quite a bit of power to put through the front tyres.

I've changed to to Goodyear Excellence which appear to be lasting well and giving the same sort of performance. Ours is on 235/45R17s which came in at around £100 a corner ordering through http://www.mytyres.co.uk

I did nearly 15000 from new on my identical model (new Mar 06) sold Mar 07, Michelins had 5mm left all around, I didn't believe how good the wear was in comparison with my wife's 2.0T Quattro Sportback (8500 on Dunlops)..

I've got a 2.0 T FSI Quattro Special Edition (220 bhp) saloon with 17k. It has Dunlop SP Sport 235/40 x 18's.

Plenty of life in the middle sections but the problem is the outside edges of the front tyres due to a tracking error from new. I've now swopped front to back as per the recommendations.

I've seen one's that have mostly been used for urban driving that need replacing around 10K.

I've just had my Dunlops replaced today (30,000 miles on them!!) - happy with them but exactly the same symptoms you describe.

I guess the outer edges can also be from enthusiastic driving - particularly with the Quattro I find it sure footed compared to my old 2 wheel drive

The Inside edge of the NSF was also badly worn and I took it up to be 4 wheel aligned straight after the tyres were fitted - mechanic came back and said not going to charge you as your tracking / alignment is perfect!!

Not bad on a 4-5 year old car but think I might get a second opinion.

Help please - got an 07 A4 2.0T FSI Quattro Special Edition (220bhp) that needs some new boots. Sadly only doen 10k miles but mostly urban hence the sh*t wear.

I know I need to do replace both tyres on a single axel at the same time but is there any issue with front and back pairs having significantly different amounts of tread? Aparently there is on the TT............

Cheers :)

Everyone gives a different answer to this! I guess in an ideal world all 4 tyres would be replaced at once, however I have put new tyres on my B6 A4 quattro when the rears have been down to about 3mm and have never knowingly experienced any problems.

Cheers for that - certainly nothing in the manual about it! Will have to bite the bullet and get the 2 fronts done tomorrow :sob:

I understood that there should not be more than 5 mm difference between the front and rear tyre depth for a quattro, but it would seem that it operates ok outside of that.

After a lot of deliberation, I stuck with Dunlops again and replaced all four at 22,500.

The rule is that the tyres on the same axle should not be more than a couple of mm different in tread depth. It doesn't matter front to back on the 'proper' quattro's, just the different sides of the same axle.

The TT ( A3 and Golf 4x4 for that matter) are different as they run a different system which is not a permanent four wheel drive like Audi's system used on the A4 and above.

Quattro does seem very good for tyre life, I used to get 40,000 miles per tyre off an A6 1.8T Quattro (chipped to 240Nm) and it wore then evenly at both ends - I was only onto my third set at 105K miles.

My A4 3.0TDI Quattro has just had new fronts at 40,000. Some evidence of wear at the edges so I'm going to get the tracking checked but can't complain about the mileage.

I only got 10K from the factory fit Conti's  on A4 2.T S-Line Special Edition but then it's mainly town use not motorway..............just fitted Bridgesgtone 050's on the front so w'll see how they last.

****** hell theres a big variation in wear here :sob:. My A4 is a Jan 2006 140TDi Avant, first set tyres, Michelin Pilot Sports wore to 2mm at 37,000 miles, pretty much evenly worn (tyres rotated front to rear and back every 12,000 miles) with no funnies.
Replaced with PS2's so, fingers crossed for similar mileages again.

Try getting a 2.5 TDi Avant Quattro Sport........the 225 40 ZR 18's I had fitted on my Rs6 replicas were gone after 15k miles.......so trying Bridgestones on the front and pirellis P Zeros on the back....teh Bridestones have really good rim protectors as well !

I had to change the front tyres on my 2.0T B7 Cab at just under 10K I bought the car from new and they lasted around 4 months :( I was very careful with them. I put the same back on, so I guess I'll be changing them again soon. I would be grateful of any recommendations though.

Only managed 8,000 miles out of my factory fitted Continentals to the front of my 2.0 tdi (170).

The replacement Goodyear F1s have done about 12,000 miles so far and still have a good bit of life left in them yet!
