I've never been happy with the glovebox ipod connector. Navigation by playlist as opposed to an ipod-synced nav is rubbish and the worst thing is the lack of track listings, can't see what I'm listening too.

I've heard there is an upgrade, possibly already used on the RS6 - does anyone know whether its software or would it be a hardware re-fit? Might go to Audi and ask but thought would check with you guys first

thanks

There is talk in America of Dension releasing a CAN based AMI solution, However rumour is it replaces the SAT radio option which we dont get either!

Good news for Americans but not for us sadly, your only option if you want track names on screen is to use the SD cards or fit an aftermarket media player like I did.

nope. the unit says "Audi MMI" but it is not MMI.

Can you explain?

many things point to the S3 having an MMI, i use the stereo, dvd satnav, and bluetooth phone functions from it - seems pretty much a multi-media interface to me.... plus says 'Audi MMI' at start up!!

yes, it says MMI, but it is not MMI.

The fact that you cannot display your ipod tracks on the screen should be the giveaway. It sees it as an external CD Changer.

I know you don't believe me, but you'll just have to take my word for it.

Marc is correct.

Its just marketing crap from Audi I'm afraid.

The "Real MMI" system is fitted to nav equipped New A4, A5, A6, A8, Q7.

Never fitted into the A3/S3 cars and cant be retro-fitted as there is no MOST network in an A3/S3.

(try using an MMI nav DVD and see how far you get!)

Sure you're not getting confused between Audi Music Interface and Multi Media Interface? The RNS-E system in the A3 uses the MMI control logic. You need to purchase the AMI option on the A4/A5/A6 in order to get full track display etc.

Marc is correct.. The MMI is really just marketting the inteface look and feel. Its totally different from the new seried MMI originally in the 6 and 8.

You could get a Dension interface, but then use the iPod interface and not the radio. This is what I do - OK, you don't see the track info on the radio, but at least I can see what I'm listening to on the iPod. My iPod is then mounted on a Brodit clip on the centre console - does the job as they say (pics available in my sig if you want to see the mount).

If you look VERY closely at the Audi marketing bumf it does say that the A3/S3 can be fitted with an "MMI based system" aka it is not MMI but is based on it and has some of the features.

As has been said the ipod integration is not one of these features which sucks!

The true MMI is on larger cars A4 upwards but sadly Audi have no plans (for some stupid reason) of using it on the A3, poor cousins yet again!

Cheers

course I believe you - just think its fairly poor to spend all that dosh on an S3 and not get a top of the range MMI as seen on some of the bog standard versions of the larger models. It's an acceptable interface in terms of the satnav/bluetooth being great for me, but the ipod situation really does grate. Was just looking for an integrated improvement without the need to purchase hardware.. guess it aint gonna happen.
