Bad news today guys, I was driving to a friends today to put an engine back in his VW camper, when the car started playing up.

I was crusiing at 75 when the coolant warning light came on, I then slowed down to 50ish and the temperature returned to normal, but after slowly speeding back up, the warning light returned and the temp gauge was back at 3/4. On the way home I limped in to the local Audi Garage hoping that they would diagnose a sensor or the like as the coolant level was normal.

No such luck they said the impeller blades on the water pump had gone, and that it would cost £504 to get it fixed. £80 quid for the pump and the rest on labour (4 hour job)

Not impressed!! Any one fancy a can or 2 of Stella with me to help drown my sorrows...?:sadlike:

That is an **** mate and I do feel for you, what miles you on? Are you anywhere near a cambelt change? Two birds with one stone and all that ..

The dreaded water pump, Sorry to hear that!
.....but if you make it a Bottle of Brandy, Ill join you

No way! :scared2: That really sucks guys. I'm gonna have a beer to help you out then. :beerchug:

What sort of mileage are you both on and has the water pump been done before? How long are they suppossed to last?

James, see if you can get it to an Audi specialist in your area for much cheaper labour costs - then again you'll know that anyway - doh!

Mileage is 75k, Cam belt was changed 15K ago but the water pump was not changed at the same time, according to Audi they only use do this on the larger engines ie, V8, 3.0 or 2.5TDI units - GRRRR

Audi are right thick shits sometimes, what do they mean they only do it on Larger engines....when its quite common on our "small" engines!!!!! Dont get it. Just an Excuse to rinse us out of more Doe again.

It's not too bad of a job to do, any local mechanic will be able to do it for far less than Audi have quoted.

Get the parts yourself from gsfcarparts.com or eurocarparts.com and it'll be much cheaper.

I bought the pump and belt for under £50, and labour was £100. Job's a good 'un.

The same thing happened to me at 53k in my 1.8T bora, I got the belt and pumped changed at my local garage for £110 all in. A pump is only about £30. I got one with metal impellars so that it didn't happen again.

Hindsight is wonderful - but that is a disgrace, was that a dealer told you that? Why couldn't they have given you the option and let you make that choice? *** :rulez:

you should always change the water pump when changing the cambelt on a B6 A4 as the whole front end has to come off!

My mate did my cambelt and water pump for £250 (all in inc parts!)
I can ask him if he will do yours if you like, although he is based in dorset?

He only fits water pumps with metal parts as the original ones are crap as they have to meet EU bio laws!

I don't think that's the reason as VAG have superseded the pump for one with a metal impeller.

The plastic one was probably much cheaper to produce.

Quick update guys, after ringing around the local Audi specialists I managed to get a quote of £229 supplied and fitted - that'll do for me!

Quattrojames - The Cambelt was changed by the previous owner at an Audi Dealership.

A quick word of warning to all owners who do not already know, when having your Cambelt replaced insist on the water pump be replaced at the same time - the extra £30-40 far out weighs the piece of mind that it supplies.

Yup, had this happen to me about two weeks ago the very same syptoms but it wasn't the impellor vanes that had snapped off but actually the rotor itself. I thought it was gonna be a sensor or at the very most the thermostatic valve but there you go.

I got mine fixed on warranty though and get the metal impellor fitted at no extra cost. Mine went at 24k btw (04 1.8T Avant)

Chris

Crikey I'm gettign worried now! Seems it could go at any time.

On a 'slightly' related note - how often is the cambelt supposed to be changed? I've heard 60K and 80K. steve_malton's was done at 60k, mine was done at 80k - I've done 130k now, so not sure if I need it doing in 10k or 30k and I'm not even sure the dealer does!!!!
