Petrol gauge has a mind of its own

I was watching my petrol gauge the other day while the car was idling and it was moving up and down between 1/4 and 3/4 of a tank, this has got progressively worse over time, and I'll be taking it to Audi next month when I get my brake fluid service and Haldex oil change done but was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem. Haven't a clue how much petrol I have at the moment.
 
i've had that problem, i had a full tank coming back from leeds, i stopped off at a service station and it showed it had half a tank
when i reached home (london) the tank was showing full.

WEIRD. call moulder and scully!!!
 
mine has the same problem,I will find out the problem at the next service (next week)..

I seem to be having this trouble with the fuel gauge at the moment. Got it booked in at the stealers next week. I asked the guy if the computer would store this a fault code he said it would not. Did anyone have any trouble when they took there's in to be looked at? Did they change the senders regardless or not. I'm concerned that they wont experience the problem whilst they have the car and not do anything? Any I dont fancy running out of petrol on dark cold night in the middle of nowhere.
Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

your alright DGS3 - it's heading towards summer time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif lol nah - I know what you mean, I think mine is playing up too. not entirely sure, but sometimes it stay on full for ages, then say 50miles down the road when I'd expect it to be still very high, it's like nearly down to half a tank! whilst being worried about how many miles you got before it conks out and ur left stranded on a dark cold night, I'd suggest you trip the miles each time you put some juice in as a temporary measure - that's what I do after every fill up!

let me know how you get on with the dealers and prices etc.

hope you get it sorted.
 
Just had my sender replaced this week... was doing the exact same thing.... Make sure that if they replace the sender that they connect the pipe leading to the other sender.
 
My S3 has developed the same problem .

Ran out of juice the other week /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/froggie_red.gif, trip was displaying 90 miles left and gague on quarter. After parking up for a bit and restarting car the gague was then on empty and trip on zero miles left /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

Since then, when full, the fuel light sometimes comes on and gague shows whatever it feels like.

Could this be the fuel senders? Didnt realise there was two of them, until reading these threads.

Only problem is my car is on a y plate and is now out of warrenty /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif

Any advice, tips or ideas of expected costs?
 
my car is outta warranty too, luckily don't sound as bad as some other chaps on here - mine may very will be ok actually /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
My 98 1.8TS is going to stealers on Friday to have the sender looked at. I'll let you know how much when I find out. Fortunately should be covered by my AA waranty.
 
be warned! i had both senders replaced under warranty,it fixed the problem for 5 months,then i had to have a new dash cluster (don't know what there are),since then,8 momths ago it's been o.k.....but what would happen if you paid for the senders to be changed,but it turned out to be the cluster? would you get a partial refund/guarantee on the first job?
 
minw was doin this for 2 weeks. I filled the tank to the brim and drove bowt 1 mile and it read empty. I was waiting for a bang when i saw the guage - imagined fuel everywhere! After bowt 2 weeks it was fine and now is very acurate! Didnt do a thing to it????

mine has been playing up today - not very happy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif it keeps wigglin bewteen 3/4 and half a tank (it was full and I've covered 110 miles or so since refuel) so yeah it should have dropped, but not all the way to half! then it decides to move back to 3/4 - ****** bizarre!
 
Does anyone know how easy the senders are to replace?

It has just happened to me today and mine is out if warranty and I dont mind getting my hands dirty>....

ANy advice please guys and girls
 
I had to get the dealer to do mine last year. Unfortunatley, my car was out of warranty, so it cost me £165... Well it did until I collected it and realised that they'd spilt diesel all over the rear carpet! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif

As for ease, I believe that all you need to do is remove the rear seat, take out the blanking cover, undo some tabs, and lift out the sender. From memory the sender itself was only around £35.

I DONT BELIEVE IT!! Well pleased.
Thought I would have to go to the dealers for a repair or parts BUT instead I tried what it said to do earlier in this post and it WORKED!!!

To recap my fuel gauge was dead! So I filled the tank to the the maxium. The gauge popped back into life but only showed 3/4 full then in front of my eyes it recalibrated itself and corrected it up to full. Now is perfect again.

Cheapest repair ever....

So much for my repair !! The gauge has just started hoping around again. I guess it is in need of repair for sure.
Hope its just the senders. Sounds like this must be a really common fault by now, maybe worse than the MAF problem!!!

Did you chaps see top gear on Sunday? where clarkson drove 800 miles on a single tank, well the range was saying it was empty and it had enough to JUST complete the journey (and this was on a BRAND firing new car) so it looks like all Audi fuel gauges are innacurate - lmao!

Afta a bit of sunday cleaning at my mates mum and dad's in the countryside - ace for washing my car! I knew I had to get some juice........petrol gauge was on, and 15 miles left on the range (and by my calculations I thought - yeah, that's just about right).

(as it seems to take a slightly tiny bit longer to fire her over than usual - is this usual after new plugs etc?)" so I thought best pull over - I did and the b!tch died! so now I'm stuck 6 miles from the nearest juice station (but I didn't know if it was juice, as the needle on the guage was still just in the red and 15 miles on the range /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif) anyway, from thought of logic, I'll call my mates old man, get him to get me some juice and see what happens - hey presto after a bit of waiting and running around she fired up! HURRAH! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif still my mates petrol can is [censored] and [censored] all over the back alloy leaving a lovely streak of sh!t everywhere - why'd I bother cleaning it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif came off with a bit elbow grease.

anyway after putting a fiva of juice in, the range reset itself to 0 miles /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif a nice steady drive to the juice station (with my mate as my wingman, Top Gun stylee) and 30 quids worth in and teh guage is still going a little crazy - it went 3/4 full which I'd imagine is correct for the price from an empty tank, and 350 on the range, but then it crept up and up to near full and 370 on the range /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I reset all the computer thingys individually, but how do I do them altogether? I've done it once before when I first got the car by accident and now I can't memba how? lol

TOTAL b!tch it happened to me as everyone was like - oooh u and and ya fancy car and ya run outta petrol (fcukers /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif) but total joy that it's not FCUKED! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
Ive given up with my fuel gague now!!

I just fill up every 250 miles, its safer that way, until i get it fixed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/froggie_red.gif

Finally got my new sender fitted on Saturday. Cost of the part was around £35, with £60 for the Stealers labour, altogether with VAT came to £110. Just need to fill in my warranty claim and the AA will pay for all bar the £25 excess. Concerned that the posts are saying that there are two senders as I've only had one done.
 
I've had the sensor (senders?) replaced under warrenty, and everything seams fine. They told me the dash gauges didn't need doing. Having re-read this post i'm a little concered I'm going to have problems later on and wish I'd forced them to change them...

did it fix the problem mate? also I noticed you're from the North East, may I ask where?
 
Recomdos, I'm just outside Middlesbrough are you in durham city or County Durham?

It's too soon to tell if the gauge is right yet, but it looks somewhere close at the moment. I had the clocks replaced last year to cure the fading DIS, so the gauge itself "should" still be OK.

yeah - mine is fading a tiny bit on the DIS on the right hand side, annoying! it's ok when I got teh lights on though! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
my has just started playing up too!! i guess that i will have to book it in, at least labour charges are lower here!!
 
the stealers here have been told by the importers that it can only be the dash cluster and my car is out of warranty !! and they had the car for 3 days just to work that out, i am now waiting to find out how much if anything Audi are going to put towards it!!
