well im back after 3 hrs driving in the M3 . Its now sitting on my drive
What a car... I test drove a few very briefly but after a longer drive its very apparent that i beats the S3 in pretty much every area.
Dont get me wrong. I loved the S3 and knew i would 'like' the M3 but was a bit worried i would miss my audi too much.
Simply not the case.
From the turn of the key it sounds like a proper sports car... none of that s3 diesel-a-like sound. Its a bit more comfy to sit in due to extra tilt adjustments on the seats. The cabin is 'as nice' as the s3 i would say with everything feeling solid and its well layed out. After 2 mins sitting in my first M3 i knew where everything was and what everything did.
On the move and round town its way less crashy than the S3. Even on the lower profile 19" tyres it rides alot smoother. The SMG in auto or manual is easy enough to use in town and a light lift of the throttle seems to result in a near perfect shift each time. Never had any jolting or missed gears or moments where i was left swearing to myself becuase the SMG made a fool of me... Im not sure what some peoples problem is with the gearbox really??
Out of town the suspension continues to impress overt the S3. The car stays alot flatter through both quick sharp and long sweeping corners. Front end feel ... well i had forgotten a bit what that felt like after 2.5 years of S3's... but its nice to have it back. The steering is direct and gives good feedback.
Initially when pulling through the gears I thought i would miss the punch of the S3's remapped little engine.. But a quick adaptation to driving with slightly higher revs than with the S3 and its just as urgent and quick and punchy as the little audi. Above 4000rpm it comes into its own and a couple of times i was into 3 figure speeds before i realised.
The brakes have more feel than the S3 aswell although i understand this is still a weak area of the M3 aswell.
And the best thing was... i got 27.5 mpg on the way home with a mix of 80-100 motorway speed and a bit of spirited back road driving once i was closer to home and knew the roads.
So incase you cant tell by now.. I'm impressed! And for those who told me its not a huge upgrade over the S3 I say to them.. drive both and then make your decision...
I have made mine!
