Alright folks,

I'm looking ahead to next year and swapping the car. Never thought i'd be saying this but i am considering a diesel due to the never ending rises in petrol costs (i don't have a company car either). I saw an A5 3.0TDI in town yesterday in bright red (missano?) and it just looked amazing.
I also hear that the 0-60 time isn't too much different to the S5? Any truth in this? I've heard great things about this engine.
For roughly the same price as a well spec'd S3 it's a no brainer really so i think i've decided on the A5. Never used to really like it but lately i'm loving it. The shape of the car seems very sensitive to picking the right colour. Quartz Grey looks brilliant.
Anyone had a drive in one? Any opinions on the A5? Alternative better options? Basically i'm just looking for feedback and opinions on the car.
I would have posted this in the A5 forum but no one ever uses it!

Cheers.

Paul.

I agree - there's a lovely Misano Red 3.0TDI S-Line that I see around town occasionally. I tend to notice it because it is the same colour as mine, but I still think it stands out to the average "man on the street".

I'd be considering a change to the A5 when the time comes to change (2010) as the "all new" A3 will probably be 12-18 months away and I don't want to be stuck with an old model for 2 years.

For some reason (perhaps the price) over here most of the ones I've seen are base models and appear to be running on tractor tyres they are so high. They've also got high profile tyres. I suppose the advantage of that is that if you buy a good one it will really stand out from the crowd.

I've had an extended drive in the A5 3.0d, and what a superb car it is.

Acceleration, road holding, handling are great. Looks are stunning to boot.

If I'd been able to afford one I'd have bought one!
Interior is typical high quality.

One downside depending on whether you have family or not is the access and room in the back of the car. Not the best it has to be said.

As I said if i'd been able to afford one i'd have bought, instead I take delivery of my new car in the next two weeks.

Great car, my old man had a 3.0 Tdi quattro sport auto in aruba blue for a while, he loved the way it drove and was inside but he decided it was ugly so got rid! Entitled to his opinion, I'm not sold on the looks personally either, bit american for me, but having driven his it was an amazing car. His was £35k before you started putting any options on so not cheap, suppose it depends what else you would buy - if it was company money I would consider one strongly, if it was my own money i wouldn't touch it, but that's because my money is reserved for something else!!

Nice cars, and very fast, not far off an S5, nothing that a re-map wont sort though.

Starting at £34k, they are a lot more than a highly specced S3, but well worth the extra.

I would have one over an S5, little bit slower but a lot more economical.

Was looking at one in the dealers over the weekend. Was the 1st time I saw one properly up close, looked better the more I looked at it. That was in Quartz Grey too with 19" wheels.

Are they going to do an S-line version? Only thing I dont like is the price!

No s-line at the minute just standard which is highly specced anyway and Sport.

Definetly well worth a consideration IMO, not a large car inside but with 240PS, quattro and the remap potential of 280Ps should be a stormer. Must be a dark colour with min 19" for me. Funnily enough I may consider cancelling the TTS order and going down this route as should be some decent part used cars surfacing later this year.

Have a mate who went from a 350Z to one of these. It's been remapped by MTM to give about 285bhp so I'm sure in this form they must be pretty nippy :) although I'm not sure if it'd be as quick as an S5 still. He has recently had to take it into Audi for a particulate filter issue which they've said is gonna be a few quid or 2 :( .

Take a look here for more info though..

Alternative.. BMW 330d M Sport?..

HTH :)

The particulate fault again, the issue with this seems to be one of short journeys thought this would have been resolved by now but it still wouldn't put me off, 285bhp and 40 mpg superb !

Fixed by Audi under warranty.. he mentioned that they didn't even notice that it was remapped either!

I think we can all get a bit too paranoid about remapping and warranty etc, I have always maintained that as long as the dealer can claim back his expenses from the manufacturer he doesn't give a chuff about what you do to your car.

My wifes 2.0tdi recently spent a week at the VW dealers under warranty due to an emissions light coming on, they carried out all their checks, replaced a couple of sensors and reflashed the car, it has been remapped since we had it, not a word was said.

One thing worth mentioning about the 3.0TDI is its sound, I walked past one on tickover the other day and it sounded very un-diesel like with a pleasing 'burble' from the pipes as he pulled off.

Ok how about this...

A5 3.0TDI Quattro or BMW 3Series 330d/335d Coupe?

I dont like BMW interiors so the Audi would win by default for me

It's a superb engine.

Our MD has an A6 3.0TDI Quattro (same engine), and one day I was following him into work for some of my journey. He absolutely left me for dead, even with the extra weight of the A6 and drag from the quattro !

I cost my old boy 50 quid to get up the road from London to Glasgow in his new 335d M Sport Coupe. Stonking performance and wonderful economy!! Much faster than the Audi 3.0d unit. We tested both before he bought and the Beemer was much quicker. Interior is lovely too if you get it specced correctly.

The interior comment will always be a personal taste thing. Audi interiors are nice but the new ones seem a bit glitzy, the BM's one is understated.

Personally I like them both and it wouldn't be the interior that made me decide!

My thoughts on each car:

The A5 is quite a rare sight but not as good to drive

The BM Coupe is a lot more common but offers a better driving experience.

I've not had a lot of luck with quality of service from my local Audi dealers but the local BM dealer is brilliant.

A5 3.0TDI Quattro or BMW 3Series 330d/335d Coupe?

I was just about to ask what the power/torque/co2/mpg was, 3.0tdi versus 330d.
I do actually think the A5 is quite nice, although highly impractical for me.
I haven't driven one, but I'm probably fair enough to assume it handles efficiently, in a numb sort of way?
That's not unkind, it's an Audi trait.
A 330D coupe has the power to make you grin though.
I switched off the TC and got a deliberately induced tail slide this morning, with less power and torque than a 330D.
it made me laugh out loud, it was fecking hilarious.

I've not had any experience of the servicing side of Southampton Audi, but have always found the sales side dismal.

I always go to Heritage Audi in Salisbury, who are superb.

Thats a good point. The 335D is a superb engine with loads of power straight from the factory, shame we cant create a mongrel and combine the 2 - Audi interior/exterior and BMW engine....

A5 3.0TDI Quattro or BMW 3Series 330d/335d Coupe?

My last car was a mapped 335D, putting out approx. 350BHP, and it was ridiculously fast, but the A5 has 4WD, which is definately a plus, as I did stuggle to get my 500+ ft/lbs or torque down, especially exiting roundabouts!!!!

On the move the 335d would be a massively faster than the A5,even though on paper the figures arent too different

I just went for a test drive with my cousin who is looking at an A5. Personally I thought it was a bit lumberish (3.0TDI). I appreciate its a new shape/model on the roads, but Id pick the 330 over this anytime. Strangely enough though my cousin, who currently drives a landy, also said it wasnt what he thought it was going to be. He's looking at the 330 this week and is after a drive in mine. He's only 25 so dont see why he needs something as big as the A5 though he does have 2 women on the go at the moment?!

exactly!

He took a cayman out... loved it... but in the end the £245 a month insurance put him off.
