Does anyone know if the new convertible headlights (with LED's) will fit the existing style headlight fitment?

Why would you want to do that. The new LED Lights 'Dame Edna's' totally ruin the look of the A3!

Even the R8 looks like a Council House at Christmas with the LED DRLs.

Some form of DRL will be required on ALL new cars by 2011. Not necessarily LEDs though.

Obviously not everyone agrees....

For the 2008 World Car Design of the Year award, the jurors praised the Audi R8 for “transforming the sports car landscape. The R8 design is striking, original and full of interesting details, from the nose strakes to the much discussed vertical ‘blade’ behind the B pillar”.

Perhaps people in other counties don't live in Council houses or at least don't decorate them for Christmas. Near where I live it's the private house that have the mass of Christmas lights.

And quoting Jeremy Clarkson makes you look like a satchel.

Try to be original if you're trying to be funny.

I for one are for the LED drl's, Biased I may be as I've retro fitted the S6 lights to my A3 but also believe that LED is going to play a major part in the future of all lighting.

I guess some people are afraid of change, and when change happenns they're immediate reaction is to dismiss. Give it time. . . . . . . .

I agree, LEDs will probably change the future of lighting, however the Audi items at present are just a styling trinket, and a poor one at that.

To me saying that they are just a "Styling trinket" suggests that they have no function at all? If that's the case then, why are they called Daytime Running Lights (DRL's) and why would Audi have to conform to all the DRL regulations that stipulate the positioning and brightness (Night/day) on the vehicle?

Not quite a "Styling Trinket" but more of a forward thinking approach to a function that is required in many EU states

I like them, and I usually agree with JC on most things

I noticed yesterday that all the parts for the A3 Cabriolet are now showing in the parts catalogue, so if anyone needs part numbers let me know.

They are style over substance. If they (Audi) were concerned with meeting DRL legislation (Norwegian law for example) they`d just have the dipped beam on constantly.

Each to their own I know, I just find them pretty crass.

The new EU Directive requiring the fitting of DRLs to all new cars by 2011 does not recommend the use of dipped headlights as DRLs. Audi already meet the requirements on the current A3 (and other Audis) fitted with Bi-Xenon headlights by fitting a normal 21w bulb in the inner lights.

So, they don`t require the LEDs for DRLs? Definately a styling addition then!

isnt the whole point of DRL's that they are a method to make you more seen?!

And in the fact that the LEDs whether you think they are nasty or not... do get noticed. So in that, they are an excellent form of DRL?

Id prefer them over the yellow bulm I have for my DRLs anyway...

The truck above in its high spec can have DRL's they are one peice tubes that run the full length of the headlight glass at the bottom.

In my opinion they look alot better than the individual LED's dotted along the edge.

So the fact that an led has a lifespan of 100,000hrs compared to 3000hrs of halogen means nothing? I know which one I'd prefer.

As I said before, not a styling trinket but more of a forward thinking approach using advanced technology to improve of existing systems of a vehicle.

Can we go back to the original question... Will they actually fit? As the cosmetic facelift is only minor, a lot of the parts could well fit. I'm not convinced the car will look any better with them but i'd be interested if it was a possibility.

As the A3 Cabriolet is now included in my copy of the parts catalogue I'll try and compair some part numbers and see if any are the same at the front end.

Well it's a bit inconclusive. Some of the parts numbers are very similar but not exactly the same. The main difference is in the first 3 digits which normally specify the model.

Front Panel - A3-8P0 085 588 A3Cab-8P7 085 588
Bumper cover - A3-8P0 807 105 A3Cab-8P0 807 105
Bonnet - A3-8P4 823 029 A A3Cab-8P0 823 029 E

The bumper cover is the same for both but the other parts are a liitle different.

If that`s what you think then fine!

So what part of LED being a more practical and dependable/robust system are your not getting?

There are those who embrace technology and change, then there are those who are afraid and get left behind. Give it time wolfsburger, You'll soon start seeing the light. . . . The LED light lol

So I quoted a modern day motoring legend - I don't see your point? He summed up what everybody else was thinking. Why would I need to think of something else to say? They look ****, end of.

Agreed, LEDs will change the future of lighting technology and if they weren't so damned expensive in the first place, more cars would have full LED light clusters. It's possible to use LEDs and have a headlight brighter than Xenon, but until that technology is more widely used then the price won't drop enough for car manufacturers to use on normal cars and not just on hyper-cars costing £millions.

Just because the nasty row of LEDs fits with DRL regulations, doesn't mean they look good!! I've seen several Corsa's around Bristol that sport them and they still look rubbish.

I'm not against the use of LEDs, just the poor aesthetic use of LEDs. If Audi had wanted to use LED technology, they should have used 30-40 smaller LEDs behind a defractor lense to make it look like a white bar of light (as per Saab appears above), rather than looking like the cheap row of LEDs. Or even better use a cathode ray tube with a suitable lense.

Nothing to do with being afraid of change VM. More a matter of taste.

Of all the things I`ve considered when narrowing down a new car, lightbulb life expectancy has never cropped up.

The long winter nights must have simply flown by in your house.......

The long winter nights must have simply flown by in your house.......

Life expectancy of a bulb has never been a consideration in purchasing any of my cars either. Why would it?

I was mearly making a comparison between LED and Halogen and explaining to you why LED's are considered as being a technical advancement in lighting. But clearly you dont see it

And as far as the jibe about winter nights in my house, I'll let that one pass before we end up tarnishing this forum with pointless insults. At the end of the day we've all got the same interests in Audi. Lets not get personal.

The other factor no one's mentioned is the "power utilisation" and the inevitable carbon footprint.

Using dipped headlights takes 110 watts (and probably actually 160 watts if you *** in all the other bulbs that come on at the same time as your headlights).

Using 21w DRL bulbs, reducing your daytime loading to 42 watts,

Using LEDs as DRLs, your loading is less that 2 watts.

So, even though its small, having the extra load on every car in europe, all the time they're driving during the whole day, as per future legislation, will add up to a significant impact - and even on your own car over a whole year of driving, I reckon it will make a tangible difference to fuel costs....

They're function is for people to be able to see you coming better and if leds can do that with the least impact on both my and the total fuel costs, then all the better.

Before many years, you'll be seeing led headlights too......

I suppose the older cars with gaslights did look even better, but then I'm not resistant to change! :)

I have just been watching a video of the new RS6 Avant on Audi TV. It has a straight line of LEDs as DRLs at the bottom edge of the headlights. Personally I think this looks a lot better that the shaped lines used on some of the other models.

You can watch the video yourself here: http://tv.audi.com/
Go to the '2 - On the Road' section and choose 'The new RS6 Avant'

That's fear talking for you. Guess some people you have to gradually nurture to accept the new. Give it time . . . .

Just seen the new A3 LED's they look horrible. I agree with Change and progress but never did go for change just for the sake of it. looks a bit 'Co-Op' to me rather than Waitrose eh Wolfsburger!!
