Hi Guys, I finally got my S3, but I just wanted to know what is the best petrol that should be used in the car eg super or normal, and which brand would be better??

Thanks
Nilz

V-Power all the way for me. Tried BP Ultimate and it didn't feel as explosive. Don't use 95ron

can you actually feel that much difference between the lot?

I take it it's running standard power Nilz, locally, I would go for V-power from Shell, but it's expensive, the car will also run on normal unleaded, but might aswell reap the benefits of higher octane fuel now that you actually own an S3! :icon_thumright:

I've ran mine on Vpower & Tescos normal unleaded and can't tell the difference. The car in standard is ok to run on normal unleaded so i go for the cheaper option.
I very rarely thrash it anway as i have a bike for speed :icon_thumright:

I used to swear by V-Power, then my mate told me he used Tesco 99 in his APR mapped Leon and got better MPG with no power loss, I use the same and have done ever since with no problems

I always use Tesco 99 in mine. My car was runing fairly lumpy a while ago and after getting it checked by the guys at MRC they said it was down to me using 95 Ron fuel. They recomended using Tesco 99. The car has run fine ever since.

Tesco 99 Ron.
This came out top in a test last year comparing V-Power, Ultimax, Tesco 99 Ron and Ultimax 101 Ron in three cars (including an M3) over several thousand miles. IF you do a search, there is a link to the report in a previous post about fuel.

Also Tesco points are worth more than anyone elses (4p per £1 spent if you cash the points in for vouchers to be spent elsewhere).

I agree, from the majority people I know with performance cars, they all recommend Shell V Power :icon_thumright:

Mine runs on love and a wee shake o' the shammy leather every saturday! ;-)

The manual actually says not to use standard 95 ron unleaded if possible (only in emergencies with a loss of power) and to use a minimum of 97 ron. I use V power 99% of the time and occasionally tesco 99.

Tesco 99 for me, never had any issues with it and theres more Tesco's around me than shell garage's

Not quite, to quote my manual (2000 Facelift)

Premium unleaded petrol with 95 ron can also be used but this can cause a slight loss in power under unfavourable conditions.
If premium unleaded petrol is not available the engine can also run on regular unleaded petrol with at least 91 ron as an emergency measure. Avoid using full throttle and fill up with 98 or 95 ron as soon as possible.

The filler cap also states 95-98 ron and as my local Tesco sells 97RON minimum my engine will survive. Besides isn't using anything higher than 98 a waste of time for the mapping of a standard car?

As i have aready said i rarely thrash the car anyway.

Nik.

ive never seen tesco99, only 97 super unleaded? Not that I've toured the world's tescos or anything.

looks like you should make this a poll. i've been using v-power/optmax since i started driving 7 years ago....

It originally only used to be available in the South East but seems to be spreading country wide (I got some in Durham at Xmas). They sell the 97 Ron stuff if they don't have the 99.

Have you put it in 'normal' cars or have you always had performance cars?
I remember filling up my Impreza with Optimax one night and there was a woman at the pump next to me filling her Fiesta 1.1 with the very same, don't think she realised she was paying a premium for a fuel she didn't even need

HAHAHA!!11!11one!

i use happyshopper ultra 102.
awesome stuff makes you smile like the little kid on the shop logo when driving. lol

I use V-Power, if its been developed in conjunction with Ferrari its good enough for me.
I may be totally off base but the way I see it Tesco 99RON is a 5% bioethanol mix which I assume is used as an octane booster and since Ethanol produces less energy than petrol I'll stick to V-Power.

Used Tesco's 99RON once in my S3, no power gains according to my rollingroad run at powerengineering, did feel a but more zippy out on the road in the midrange department though, and the exhaust noise was a bit louder also. Too bad you can't get the stuff around here.

actually not sure what I was thinking last night, I didn't use it in my Mk3 Golf 16v, as I didn't notice a difference, but with my Integra Type R and now my S3 I use it.

The reason being, a good few years ago autocar did a test using a Civic Type R, Jaguar XJR and another car, they did alot of before/after tests, and they all showed significant improvements performance wise, and the before/after pics of the inlet/exhaust valves and top of piston were surprising, alot less carbon build deposits!

so as long as the car has a knock sensor and can compensate for the higher octane fuel, and you're half bothered about your car, it would be worth using it.....

Allways used V-power , but the Tesco round the corner has just got the 99RON in , so ive just filled up today!

^^^^^^^i think you have to give it about 3 tank fulls for your ECU to adapt ( even if it does/will ) worth a try tho!

Its ******** that we cannot get that in the Heart of the country...nearest is Northampton.
V-power is my cars fuel

I'm glad everyone else is admitting they can't get 99tesco. It's been talked about on here for aaaages, and I thought I must be the only one with a lame tescos...

My local Tesco has only just started selling it , and it's one of the big Extra stores!

OK phantom says it takes about 3 tankfuls and by the looks of it, my car has been run on normal unleaded, whats the best thing to do, just fill up a full tank of super and continue to do so from then on??

Also will i feel a difference and if so what sort of difference will i feel, it wont have an adverse effect will it???

Thanks

I use the Tesco 99RON fuel in mine
Spoke to Kim Collins at QST and he says you shouldn't run a standard S3 on 95RON never mind a modded one.
Shell V-Power is a bit more expensive and numerous tests have proven it to be lower quality than Tesco 99
Im sure people only use V-Power because of the ferrari advertising! Jumping on the bandwagon n'all!! haha!!

Also theres no Shell garage in Shrewsbury so ive only ever used it a few times myself!

OK so out of the widely available supers, what would be the best to use, bearing in mind are not super enough in Brum to have Tesco99

Mate, you go past Shell all the time at Shirley triangle, just fill up with V-power, its 108.9 p/l the last time I checked, and it's good for your injectors apparently. BP Ultimate over the road is a but too frothy, I can never get a full tank for some stupid reason, Tesco's next to notcutts has SuperUnleaded 97RON stuff if you really want to save a few pennies., not tried it myself though...

Jo cheers for that, just wanted to make sure thats all....
