Hi people,

been quoted £700 for 1 yr extension to my A3 audi 2.0 TDI warranty which expires in just over 1 month. Thats with the 15,000 mile per year limit, for unlimited mileage its £862. Would you lot pay this???

My car has had the coolant warning light on and even after I topped it up so its going in next week for a check up. Read about porous cylinder head probs which are expensive.

To be honest I may just pay the £700 for piece of mind. Just wanted some opinions out of interest whether you guys would do the same.

£700 seems a ludicrous amount to pay for something you may never use!Surely there must be cheaper option?!?!?

Absolutely no chance in hell would I pay £700 for a year.
The chances of anything going wrong that would cost £700 to repair are not great enough to justify, and if they werre big enough, I wuold not keep the car to be honest!

My mate didn't pay much more than that for his Mercedes E55AMG (02). I think he bartered it down from just over a grand to £750 for unlimited mileage, but then there is a lot to go wrong on that car. Daylight robbery.

My mate's Alfa threw a big end and needed a major rebuild.
Even that 'only' cost £900.
If it's out of warranty, any repairs could be done at an independent specialist, remember.
That would keep the cost down, (dons June Whitfield wig) 'should the worst happen'.

People like Warranty Direct offer similar cover for less. Before I bought my lastest A3 I was considering keeping my existing one for another year and Warranty Direct quoted £380 for a years cover. That was in Decemeber 2006.

I'd take the chance and do without. Not sure how these extension warranties work - whether you get the same level of warranty you did in the 1st 3 years or not?

If its anything like the ones you get offered at 2nd hand car garages they aren't worth the paper they are written on

At 3-4 years of age they ( Audi ) would fight tooth and nail not to cover most things under warrenty, or you will get the " can't find the problem sir " routine!

Well said bowfer, for once :hubbahubba:

I would do the following:

Cal your bank and set up a deposit account and then set up a standing order to put £700 into the account every year.

If you need it the money is there, if you don't then when you come to buy your next car you will have some cash towards the deposit

If you look into risk theory then basically insurance isn't wrth taking out statistically aqnd that is why they offer it (because they will make money rathe than you saving money)

No Way !! Get the feeling that price may be negotiable and they were just trying it on. Go back and barter, reckon you could halve that easy, or more.

i've sent them an email. will see what they respond. Said it was far to expensive and they need to give me a better quote or they can F' off!

I wouldn't pay anything for any extended warranty - just a tax on the stupid IMO

Unless of course you have something go wrong that costs more than the amount you have paid out - that's not stupid.

Yep, agree. I never take extended warranty on anything, cars, electricals etc.

Its a rip off and the money you save by not taking them up will easily pay to replace or repair something if it does go wrong

I dunno about that, I bought a laptop from PC World a few years back, was asked if I wanted the pricey 3 year extended warranty, asked them if it was new for old and covered water accidents which they replied yes, so I took it out, cost about £200, low and behold last summer I had an accident and got a spiffy new £900 VAIO.

If £700 is a lot of money to you then Id risk it and not bother, if your car is regulary serviced, well maintained and you dont abuse it, chances of something bad happening are quite slim.

But then again, if your loaded and lazy and just want piece of mind, try and get it cheaper. (obviously)

John - they sent me some stuff too. Did you have to ask for the quote or they send it you anyway as they didn't send me a quote, not that I'd take it out anyway!

They send you the forms inviting you to renew breakdown cover?

Audi sent me a quote via email, after I asked them on the phone.

I emailed them and said it was a lot and could they do better, they just said it was a fixed price and thats what you have to pay.

i've got the money, i dont really want to spend it on warranty but I had to get the turbo replaced and it is having a coolant problem so for piece of mind I may get it for the next yr incase anything major goes wrong.

People saying paying for an extended warranty is stupid are pretty stupid themselves. The older something gets the more likely it is to have a problem and breakdown. A car is expensive to fix, its not like a toaster. If my plasma tv broke I could buy a new one the same day. If my A3 broke, i wouldnt fancy shelling out over 3k in repairs.

In my experience, if a problem occurs within the existing warranty period and the problem couldn't be diagnosed and then the same fault reoccurs outside the warranty period, then I have managed to get stuff sorted, as it the problems have been logged as existing ones

The items concerned were both Suzuki motorbikes (2 year warranty from new), but they were both sorted eventually.

I wouldn't spend £700 on the warranty. As has already been said, you could spend the money and then Audi could turn round and not sort it anyway. I'd be more tempted to go to someone like WarrantyDirect and then bank the difference if you have the money. If something does go wrong then you have piece of mind as you have a warranty - if nothing goes wrong you can buy some toys with the money in the bank!

I'd attempt to negotiate, but I'd still pay for it at £700- because I'm a car breaker.

What like any other insurance you mean? All insurance is a waste of money....untill you need it.

My BUPA cover costs more than that, and I haven't needed to claim on it in over 4 years. You could argue that I've wasted nearly £3k, but when it comes to an operation, I know what sort of hospital I'd rather be in.

If you've even a slight doubt about your cars reliability over the next 12 months, I'd say it was probably worth it.

If you've got a coolant prob then either sell it or make sure you have some warranty to cover costs of repair or have warranty to include with sale if you get fed up with it.

I would guess my warranty bills in the first 15 months of ownership would now total over 11/12 k and only done 9,000 miles but it is in garage most of time. So warranty can very worthwhile and spare car they provide are useful too!!

Please excuse me if this is a noob moment but doesn't insurance cover a catastrophic breakdown ie the engine dieing? ..After the warranty has expired I mean.

*edit*

found the answer; no - only when the car has crashed, flood, stolen engine, etc

If you can afford it then put the money (plus some more if you can) into an account that you won't touch. If you don't have any problems the money will still be there at the end of the year + interest.

Lets say you can purchase a 1 year extended warranty (from someone like Warranty Direct) for £400. If you put £400 in the bank and nothing goes wrong you've saved £400. BUT if something does go wrong and it costs say £800 to repair, then you've lost your £400 + another £400.

That's what insurance is all about!!!
