car rattles from gearbox, but when i press the clutch pedal down it goes away. have had a couple of garages look at it without opening the box up as i'm short of the cash required to replace gearbox if it is that. anyway the VAG specialist thinks it's the gearbox and a gearbox specialist thinks it's the flywheel. now the question is has anyone on here had a similar problem if so what are the signs of either????

thanks in advance....

both the garages think it's not the release bearing..i thought it might be that...cheers

I have the exact same noise, please update us on what the actual issue is

i'm booked into the VAG specialist end of next week for a flywheel and clutch kit replacement...hopefully it wont be a gearbox issue. i will update you when i pickup the car.

cheers

do you feel a little vibration from the clutch pedal when you press it 2 or 3 mm down gently?

I had a similar problem with mine which I noticed just after buying it. Again the noise went when i dropped the clutch. The whole gear box just went... luckily it was still in the 3month warranty with the garage, so I had a refurbed gearbox dropped in with a 12month warranty free of charge

Well car is stripped at the garage, and has already had a new flywheel and clutch fitted...so they now think it's the gearbox...which was sent the gearbox specialist who says its fine but will change a few bearings inside. the only thing they said was that it has a solid flywheel ( i'm assuming this means a single rather than a dual mass flywheel) setup. the only thing i can think of is replace it with the dual mass flywheel kit from LUK that i supplied to them...

your thoughts please......

A lot of people fit the solid flywheel from a G60 golf/passat or 16v mk3 golf with a vr6 clutch kit. I have this set up, as do a few other on this forum.

It's an improvement over the original clutch from a performance point of view, ie they are less likely to slip under full throttle.

A characteristic of this setup is a slightly juddery clutch take up especially when reversing.
Also you will often hear the rattling you describe from the layshaft bearing (I think) at idle. The rattle can be a little annoying, but its normal and nothing to worry about.

I would stick with the solid flywheel, especially if you intend to remap the car.

well i picked the car today and they decided to replace the layshaft bearings and also removed the old (newish) flywheel kit and replaced it with the dual mass flywheel kit, it's the wifes car so i don't think she wants anymore power out it. the noise is no more!!!
