Looking to do a single to double din conversion, just not sure whether to go for the RNS-E or an aftermarket unit... ?

Please state reason(s) for your choice.

If you choose 'Aftermarket Unit' which one would you go for?

i'd go with the RNS-E if money is not a problem. It will look miles better and is a nice system after having used it give it the thumbs up.

Yeah, RNS-E every time. It's not just the perfect, colour-coded factory-fit and functionality that swings it, it's the way it integrates with the car, like the DIS display, the red illumination at night (even the screen inverts its colours when the headlights are on, so the interior isn't too bright). It's extendable too with options like Bluetooth and TV. Plus, you'll add a drop of value to the car and definitely make it easier to sell.

Having said that, I've not made any ICE installs for a few years now so I don't know what the alternatives would be. The A3 8P double-DIN dash isn't perfectly square either (wider at the top and with rounded edges) so whatever you bought would need some custom fascia to fill the gaps.
 
ive got an alpine ivad310 screen so got the nve099p to match, imo audi overcharge for their sat nav system

the beauty of the alpines, i take them with me whichever car i go to
 
Actually, it may be more pricey, but it can be retrofitted cheaply & easily and anything that is integrated is always way better.

Besides...if you can remove it to fit other cars then so can others!!!!

RNS-E Is coded and can only be fitted to Audis so making it less of a theft risk.

So for me RNS-E all the way!

Absolutely,

I would rather have that any day since the system is fully integrated wnd you can add TV function and Telephone function at a later date if you desired.

Also It's a good sounding system with or without Bose.

Cheers, I'm looking to do AN ICE build for SQ, just a bit wary about the RNS-E unit due to limited control etc. Not sure how the unit would handle all the aftermarket euipment.

The RNS-E isn't well suited for ICE expansion; there isn't any pre-outs are anything like that. But the MP3 capability via SD cards and very good sound quality (a noticeable improvement over the Symphony II) are plus points. Depends how important your sounds are as opposed to sat nav plus integration with your Audi.
 
What is involved to fit this? I will have the symphony head in mine, I didnt fancy paying over 2k for the RNS-E.
 
I'd go aftermarket, it allows for better expantion. I have a single din Alpine, I can add bluetooth for £100 and use the Hu as the keypad, and its touch screen, yes the Audi system intergrates well but i think is limited. With aftermarket you can add DAB and digital tv for approx £250 or you can watch DVD's if you want. Caraudio direct have a Pioneer on offer at £780 and a Kenwood at £740 both have NAV, Pioneer is also bluetooth. Connectors can be purchased from a company called Nexxia (sp ??)

this is the primary reason i go aftermarket and alpine!

what does/will your install consist of?

I'm thinking about buying a pioneer AVIC-D3. Reasons: a good package i.e. plenty of functions/features. Value for money, £850 ish fitted. Full manufacturers back up/gaurantee. They integrate pretty well, such as matching lighting. Oh, and it's been a few years since i fitted a unit so amplified/none amplified speakers, quadlock etc is flying over my head a little. :)

audi have just taken my car in for paint correction and the loan car they have given me is an 07 a4 tdi with rns-e and bose and to be honest i think the sound in my car is better, which is non bose with a pioneer deh-p9400 headunit shame really i was expecting more from a bose set up

The headunit is the limiting factor,even on Bose.
My MD always changes the headunits on his Bose equipped Audis,and it sounds superb.
So I'm thinking Bose + your headunit would beat your current set-up.
