My Detailing Finally Gets Up And Running

Well as some of you maybe unaware, ive started doing some weeknight/weekend detailing for either friends or family or people who know people.

Gave some business cards out, and my dad gave me a call last night. He's got 2 vehicles that want doing this weekend.

The first one is a Convertible blue Audi TT....I think I’m going to do this on Sunday, and the other is either an American GMC Pickup or a Chevy pickup, not 100% sure...I’m going to do this on sat.

The 2 owners of these vehicles are potential 'regulars' and I suppose this is how impressed they are with the finishes. I don’t have a PC so I can't do much about swirls, but they are going to get the best treatment they can by hand as I have been learning alot over the last few months doing my car, and mums/dads/mates cars.

I’m going to set myself plenty of time to do these cars as I want them to be the best I can get them.

These details are going to be added to this thread once done, possibly on Sunday night as I wont get chance to add the Saturday detail on Saturday night.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips or advice for me.

P.S. These cars are going to be done in locations away from my garage (where I have previously done all my other details).

I know there are alot of knowledgeable people on here, so any tips guys?

if you're doing it elsewhere, then public liability for your work and it's effects, car insurance to drive customers cars, etc
 
ahhhh right.

Well i'm not going to be driving the cars as they will either be brought to my house and left there or i'll be taking my stuff to their property.

Just thinking, i'm not really likely to damage anything doing it carefully by hand (no PC), but i see your point.

Basically i'm offering any service that i have done previously.

All depends on what the person fancies.

This could just be a hoover and wash, or wash,clay,polish,hand-glaze or wax.

I know it could be a bit far fetched... but say for example you use a product, which gets in to the ground, and gets in to a neighbours fish pond and kills the fish?

Just being Devil's Advocate here, you never know what could happen!

Best wishes Granty. You will need to make sure you've got plenty of quality MF cloths if you're doing hand stuff and good applicators like the German ones sold by PB for the polishing bit mate. You'll also need lots of energy and staying power which is something I'm still building up to.

If any fish get damaged, then the most effective insurance is to buy them another one. It's quick and simple and no paperwork involved. That's after it's been proven that it was your Megs APC that killed it in the first place.

My next door neghbour has a little pond with an 18-yr old fish in it, no joking. One day when the joiner's mate was taking rubbish out to the bin, he asked me if the fish in the pond was still alive I told him yes and that it was 18 yr old. To that he exclaimed "Feck, that ****** fish is older than me!". So yes, watch out for any fish.

Now get those cars looking as good as yours Sir.

Turns out that me dads going to bring the TT round to my house (its his mates missus' car and me ole mans insured) to do it, so thats not a problem.

The GMC i'm going to be doing at the transport yard, and then i'll get it inside once washed to give it some TLC. So the above issues shouldn't happen here lol.

I enjoy doing it and they are 2 nice vechicles too (by the sound of it), the GMC's supposed to have 22" chrome rims. (Which means i might just go with the APC and Maxi suds on them rather than wheel bright.......just imagine??!!!)

Not sure whether to use the Werkstatt kit on them both, wonder what the results would be like on a black car & sky blue car?

Or do i go with the SRP, hand glaze, moose wax route....hmmmmmmm decisions decisions.....

Might leave that decision until i see them.

oh yeah, forgot to mention that ive got a reasonable amount of MF's (prolly about 10+). Ive only got one German applicator (i'll get some more), but for now i have a few Sonus pads and some Clearkote applicators.

If it's a sunny day, use Jeffs Acrylic on anything that has a dark metallic/pearlescent finish - the flake jumps into your eyeballs if the sun is out.

If it's a flat colour or dull/overcast I'd go for a good wax finish for a nice wet and reflective look.
 
To add to all the valuable advice above, see what the paint is like; if you are facing major swirls you should really glaze it to death to help hide the defects and boost the gloss, so in this case the Werkstatt Acrylic is best avoided; a good glaze followed by a coat of wax would be best in terms of hiding power. However, if the paint looks reasonably good, then consider the Werkstatt, as chances are it will bring out a more eye popping shine. :)
 
Well, its now sunday morning and ive got them both rattled off.

The TT was at mine when i got home from work on friday night, so i got changed and did that on friday night, finished at midnight.

Sat morning came and i got down to the yard at about 10.45.

It turns out that this GMC is actually a Black Dodge Ram, complete with Crew-cab & 22's.

Finally finished the Dodge @ 6.30, this was the hardest work EVER. It was taller than me and i'm 6"2'!!
