Back to Black? Vasoline? It really is a pain, my old BMW did it all the time - not handy when you started at 6am

i read in the s3 manual that if u put the key in the lock andremove it, the door / lock heats up and unfreezes after 45 secs. I'm sure I read that..I'll check inthe manual.

You can buy proper lubricant in Halfords, comes in an aerosol can, works a treat. Vaseline may eventually rot the rubber.

thanks people

Halfords is close by so i will pay them a visit for the stuff. cheers for all input/output ,i'll do anything to prevent a trip to the stealers even though it would only be a damaged seal, in saying that i would do anything for a bit o' dairylea!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif

The stuff you need is called "Rubber & Nylon" lubricant, its Halfords own brand.

Not quite sure on that one.

Gambba

Try a Google search with the words Vaseline Rots Rubber.

Vaseline is an oil based lubricant which will eat the latex (rubber).

(Can't be bothered to select sarcastic icon thingy).

Regards

Ah. Wiped vaseline all over door seal on my wife's car last night. I'll be trying to clean that off tonight then. Any suggestions what to clean if off with?

In my opinion this doesn't apply to most rubbers these days, and the process is so slow in cases where the rubber does perish that it's hardly a concern.

[/ QUOTE ]You must be ****** mad to get your ord fella out to do that when its that cold /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gifit might drop off, it will take more then a trip to halfords to fix that one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

Garethj, Gambba can be in a cold place too and I'm sure he knows his stuff. That said, I didn't detect any sarcasm in his comments (he never does except towards Drill LOL) I'm not in a position to confirm latex content in door seals as there are many forms of rubber, but how long do we keep our cars anyhow? It may rot rubber till after 10 years so, so what do we care? I'd rather get my door open in the morning.

Khufu, why are you posting if you are not in a position to comment. I am in a position to comment, which is why I posted the advice don't use vaseline with rubber. I have seen it rot rubber and believe me it takes a lot less than 10 years to do it.

I thought the whole point of forums like this was to get the best advice through discussion. Gambba likes a healthy discussion and being Dutch can be blunt towards people, I was just being blunt back. People have respect for Gambba's advice and he is a knowledgeable contributor therefore people follow his advice. In this case his advice is wrong and could lead to damage that could be easily avoided. I though it would be helpful to point that out.

The sarcasm you couldn't spot was in the silly little smiley Graemlins. If you noticed my follow up I said I couldn't be bothered to respond with the same silly little icons.

Neither of us need you to butt in thanks.

Gambba may well be English but he behaves like a dutchman.

Walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it is a duck.

The subject of vaseline & rubber can quickly deteriorate into phhhnarr phhhnarr type humour, I'm amazed this thread didn't go in that direction sooner.

It nearly did the other night but my computer crashed and i couldnt be ars*d typeing the short story i wrote about durex making door seals for audi.

Well I dont know any Dutch to comment on how they behave either individually or stereotyped, but lets not go there. I think enough has been said on this doorseal matter.

so, whats actually your problem dude?

do you even know Dutch people or are you just biased in your own limited mind?
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

is not possible to focus in this forum on the content and not on non-relevant issues like where a dude lives or where he was born?

The Dutch are great people, I know loads of them and have worked with them for years, but they tend to be as blunt as a blunt thing wearing blunt trousers.

The fight thing is a great idea, but lets set some rules:

The first rule of Audi Sport Fight Club is ........

Gambba nice to hear from you again, seems we agree that forums are here to encourage healthy debate.

I am chilled, but some of the other people who joined in the thread have started to get a bit excited. Why is it that when two people clash and start a healthy debate others pile in to try and stop it. Fatlad had the right idea, fight it out, I still think the Audi Sport Fight club is a great idea.

JayBee3 sorry if you feel upset by what I said, but actually you got upset by your own interpretation of what I said. Whats the problem with being blunt, it cuts through so much crap, its a great atttribute. BTW do you live in a windmill ? (Joke)

Gambba, I wasn't telling people not to post, even a moderator should not have that right. I was pointing out that starting a post with something like "I don't know anything about this subject but..." calls into question the point of posting. That said I guess my posting stats would be so much higher if I kept posting on subjects that I know nothing about.

Gareth,

Ofcourse I live in a windmill and wear wooden shoes and eat liqorice all the time (along with cheese and herrings).
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

I just couldnt resist te respond on your comments.
Being blunt is a way of life for me....... just like all the 16 million other gloggies over here..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/groovy.gif
