Aftermarket Rear Parking Sensors

Don't suppose anyone has actually fitted one of these to their audi... There seem to be many cheap ones on the market, all priced a lot less than Audi's standard factory fit.

Any recommendations, advice from those who have, would be appreciated.

I have fitted a number of Cobra reversing sensoe kits in my
previous job as an auto spark, they are very good and as far i can remember we never had one back or any problems..
£150 ish i think

very good kits.
 
Yeah I have on my A4. They are from Bosch, and they also supply the factory fit system if I'm not mistaking.

You buy the sensor kit and they an extra car-specific kit that contains adapters to make the kit fit your car (including a sheet to mark the places where you have to drill in the bumper.)

only downside is, they are black and cannot be painted. Price was arount the €500 mark (that's a little over 300£).
 
audi upgrades
I've had these sensors fitted to my cars since 1992. Works great and have saved many a bash from hidden objects.
My latest unit can now be bought from Argos for about £24 and comes with a manufacturer's 2yr warranty.
Since it's so easy to fit, I figure if it goes wrong, it can replaced for next to nothing. I think they can be painted to suit body colour. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif
 
interesting... i'll look into the cobra one, that seems a reasonable price...

there's another one (details @ http://www.astrodoneps.com) for about 80 quid. they claim that you can insert an 200cm wide strip antennae behind the rear bumper - which is of course a "cleaner" installation, than drilling holes for ultrasonice sensors.

but of course, the cheap price and installation method leaves me sceptical.
 
Ok, based on some research, I've come to the conclusion that there's two types of rear parking sensor... basically either ultrasonic or electromagnetic.
the ultrasonic ones seem to be the most common - you can see the little circular sensors stuck onto the bumpers of audi's and mercs etc..

But the electromagnetic ones seem a better option if you dont want to tamper with the exterior of the car, you can insert a metallic strip beneath your bumper.

This to me sounds better, so if its so good why isn't this method used as a factory fit for all the big car manufacturers?

The more sensors in a system the better coverage, most OEM systems that come as standard on cars have four sensors which is the best protection available. "
