hey guys, have tried searching, but not really found what i want.

upgrading cars now, (just wrote off my big turbo mk4 golf) and i'm looking for 1.8t quattro a3's.
i'm familiar with 1.8t engine, so know what to look for there.
its the quattro system i'm new with, anything to look out for when buying a car?

anyone know how much power you can throw at a quattro a3? my fwd golf was ihi'd at 300ish bhp, then bigger turbo, and 450ish bhp.

400bhp and 4wheel drive......:) be nice to have some grip

If you're after big BHP, best start with an S3. You can remap a standard A3 to about 220 BHP, after this you've got to think about changing turbos, internals, clutch etc etc.

With the Quattro system (which is a Haldex style system so mostly running FWD until slippage), just check that the haldex fluid has been changed on time. Other than that, it's a pretty reliable piece of kit.

thanks mate.
reason for going a3 is i've found them cheaper than s3. practically the same car? except standard s3 more powerfull...

planning going big turbo on a3, 1.9l, internals, clutch etc... want to replace my mk4 golf, but with 4wheel drive.

Newer S3's have vvti and forged intenals (which the a3's don't).

Other than that you'll just need better ARB's suspension and brakes. A good (although expensive!!) project, good luck fella!

i'm no stranger to expensive builds.... cost off modding golf geting on to £20k. swore i wouldnt do it again
arbs, susspension, brakes, engine mounts, fmic, exhaust all on shoping list.

the quattro a full time 4wd system? or do rear wheels come into play when fronts slip?
newer a3's will have vvti tho yea? changing internals so no worries bout them

No, I think only the S3's were (but someone will be along in a bit to confirm this). The Haldex run's just the fronts until they slip.

Another thing to consider is that facelift models got DBW (so no left foot braking!) and ESP, nifty but good to turn off!

facelift came at what year? i'm looking at 2001 sorta age for money i've got.
need to find a good haldex guide and figure it out

Early 2001 (as with mine!!). Do a search on Haldex on here, there's been some great write-ups.

ajq engine codes came with forged internalls

Hi Mat,

Havent I seen u on UKMIVS?!

I have recently bought an A3 1.8T Quattro Sport and am luving it!

The 4WD is just awsome on bends and coming out of rounabouts etc...

Do you have any bits from the Golf you could use on an A3 as I believe most of its the same?

Cheers

Dave

yes mate, moved over from uk-mkivs.
golf was cat a write off, tho engine survived. theres a £1200 manifold and £1300 turbo on there, and they have to crush it! :crying: not to mention the recent rebuild...
so yes, could have used loads, brembos, engine bits etc.
just glad i had that roll cage and harness's.

could you not surely get all them bits off the car?!? their gonna crush it?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wtf! i thought most compaines give u chance to buy em back mate?

sorry to hear that happened btw, had no idea mate!

spent hours on the phone arguing this... they think i will put car back on road lol. belive me its a mess, i had to be cut out, evan with rollcage. never in million years would that car run again.
hoping i can slip the crusher some cash, let me have a hour with car at least. managed to get their number and adress :whistle2:

Good work, lol, f*ck it, take the crusher on a date if its means him letting get the stuff back off the car!

Esp as u spent the £££ on the car, their your parts, or are they paying u out a lot on the car?

I had a Beemer years back which I wrote off, I did manage to drive it back to my house, but I took my exhuast, wheels and susp off it as id put all them bits on! They did kick up about the wheels, but they also claimed I was paying an additonal £50 to insure the wheels, so I said id give them the £50 then, but I never heard another thing, this was about 10 years ago mind and I know laws have changed since then.

You could always say u have lost something thats inside the car and you need to get to it?.......as you walk in with ur snap on kit under ur arm, lol

lol tried that, said i wanted to go get my cd player.
"oh we can post you that sir", great, will you pst my turbo and manifold? "no"
worth a try. i wont give up.

desperate for payout so i can get my A3. got a old 306 to run about, and have company van. A3 will be project car.
its a very slippy slope i'm on

Real sorry to hear about the the golf mate, at least ur alive tho i guess. cars are replacable.

hope all goes to plan with the Audi tho! should be an animal.

yeah sod speaking to them, talk to crusher direct, lol, im sure they let u take all u want off it for a good drink, if they let you and its just being crushed u may as well take all you can off of it mate, I ****** would!

wana play carefull though, dont wana mess my claim up. want that money in my account. counting on that

want it to be similar to my golf, but not so extreme. golf was stripped out with weld in cage. want to keep audi stealth, no cage, just under bonnet mods etc.

Lets hope with the 4WD the cage wont be needed then mate, was it on the track or the road it happened?

on the road, still in running in mode. very wet day, supposed accident blackspot. toyo R888's on car. probaly aquaplaned?
dont remember a thing about it. nothings come back to me, 4 weeks after. short term memory is bad still.

there is a cheap s3 in gloucester on autotrader , 5900 ono , looks quite tidy , its a v reg , easiest way to get the big power down , you going for the same sort of power again , i thought it was in the 500 bhp barrier

Your golf sounded awesome mate, I have to agree with most on here that surely you would be better of with a S3?
Do you have any pictures of your golf, especially under the bonnet?

Hiya Matt,

I followed your DIY BT build with interest on uk-mkivs.net.

Sorry to hear about the crash, probably better you dont remember anything about it eh? :|

Will be following this next build with interest as well, make sure you get plenty of progress pics!

For what its worth, I think your starting out with the right chassis, for what you have planned I think the S3 would be a waste of money. Well not a waste of money but the money would be better spent on a very cheap A3 quattro and sourcing S3 bits as and when you need them.
Lets face it, you can get pretty much everything you need from fleabay and breakers.

I would imagine you would be able to have a sorted BT A3Q for less or the same money as a clean S3...

This is interesting, as I do like the S3's, and would have bought one for the extra power they have, but they dont make them in 5 door!

I know 5 door isnt everyones cup of tea but personally I luv the look, something about the rear quarter and back...mmmmmmm......back!

Anyhoo, there is nothing wrong with my engine, so I would feel loathed to soruce an S3 lump and change it all, but on the other hand I would have liked a car ending up with close to 300 bhp again, as you just cant beat that feeling!

What would it take to get an A3, at 180 bhp upto that kinda power? obv most chips take you to about 210/220 ish?

So what would follow that?

That is odd, the guy who came to collect my friends car let him strip his £300 seats out and the cd player, brakes etc.

nope, dont remember a thing bout crash.
yea nick, similar setup to bill. used his mani/dp, and big turbo. 450 was target for that.
i'm going for A3 over S3 just because i want to:yes:
hoping to make a decent 400bhp setup, strictly for road use.

what pics i have. none off cage tho.... gutted

that was new turbo set up.. pic below that, (lil one) was of crash.

Car looks a awesome piece of kit, Real sleeper! i can see why you want a A3TQ over a S3 now.
Bet your Golf suprised a few people?
Nice pics other than the little one:blink:

:p update.....
insurance paid out on golf at last. their offer was good, way more than what i expected them to offer. paid money in bank today. hunt for the A3 starts now.....

Nice one Matt, a massive weight off your shoulders then I'd imagine :)

If you don't mind me asking, what did you get offered and what did your Golf stand you at?

If you don't mind sharing that info I'm sure it will either shock a few people about the realities of modding (hole in wallet) and/or the realities of not insuring mods properly and the risks therein.

huge weight gone, had draged on wayyy to long. ended up phoning them everyday for a week to pester them in end. standard golf, same miles etc as mine is £5200 book price. got just shy of £10k for mine. was expecting them to offer £7k at first. got home fri nite and had the money on doorstep.
golf owed me a hugeeeeeeeeeee ammount on money. best part of £20k at least.
lesson is.... insure all mods. if you cant afford to insure it, dont get it.
