need help with yet another little problem.

my rear speakers dont work. The fronts do but sound a little disstorted.

I have an aftermarket radio in there and all the connections seem fine, there is an iso adapter in there which it is connected by.

what does seem odd is that in the iso adapter coming from the audi loom end (hope that makes sense) is only four wires (i.e just front speakers) this wire is also larger than the other wires in the car. It still looks like genuine stuff but seems odd there is only 4.

there is a red plug in the audi loom that looks like a plug has gone into it to connect with what i am guessing would be the rear speakers but this has 5 wires in it? it would seem like there is a L AND R and then say a common earth (i.e 2 wires going into 1 connector)

i will try and get some pics up if someone can tell me how and this might explain things a little.

if you fit aftermarker hu, you need a lead to power up the amp to run the rear speakers. search button is your friend. =)

did not know my a4 had an amp. is this standard?

would there be a fuse that powers it that might be worth checking? if so what number would it be?

also, where is this amp located?

the amp is fixed to the parcel shelf, in the boot between the rear speakers. you need that lead to get them 2 work.

i cant see anything that looks like an amp between the speakers?

all i can see is the metal work.

how do i put pics up on here? do i use photobucket?

it might make things eaiser if i could show you what i mean

here are some pics of the wires - hope they make sense to someone.

also a pic of the space between the speakers where you said the amp should be?

in the second pic the large black connector is what comes from my stereo, the brown block that has two sets of wires coming out (with black tape on) are the ones that work the front speakers. these work fine allthough they do sometimes sound disstorted.

The red block on the left comes from the stereo iso connector and has 3 wires (red, blac and white) these have been connected to what should be the rear speaker wires on the iso connector and what i am assuming is the rear speaker wires on the audi loom. There are about 5 wires in that bunch. dont know what the bunch above it are for but they dont connect to anything.

any ideas?

The rear amp is standard and is bolted to the left rear speaker. Just disconnect it and run new speaker cable back to the ISO connector at the HU.
The reason the amp doesn't work is that it needs a feed from the rear RCA's from the new HU and also a remote on feed to switch it on. I can see you've used the RCA adapter but can't see what it's connected to, or where the 12v remote on feed is connected.
The amp is absolutely shyte so by passing it is a much better option, otherwise it'll be drowned out by the fronts as it's only 2 x 20w.

ah i am starting to get it now. The metal cover thing that is on the left rear speaker is actually the amp.

The blue wire that comes out of the red block (hope that makes sense) that i think is the remote on wire is connected to an aerial thing and into the iso block, i did wonder what that was for.

i will try and get a better pic

i would rather try and sort this out than run other wires as i really dont want the hassel of that.

all this was in the car allready by the way and looks like it was done by audi themselfs or something. it dosent really look like its been butcherd to much.

is there a fuse etc for the amp i can check also?

here are some pics that might help

whats the purpose of the long silver thing that the aerial plugs into? the aerial will reach the headunit without this extension thing and the blue wire could just be fed straight from the iso block.

is it some sort of suppresor? if thats gone faulty and blown could that be the reason the rears are not working? could i just do away with it?

just been runninga search and there is talk about a sub?

have i got a sub in mine and if so where is it? as far as i know my car is a standard A4 and had a 'Concert' radio fitted when new

No sub in a non Bose B5 A4.
Where does the other end of the red adapter go, looks like it's the speaker input adapter rather than the RCA input, so it should connect to the rear speakers (the outside connections on the ISO speaker block) of the HU.

the red, black and white wires have been joined with the purple and green wires etc. these are the rear speaker wires on the head units connector.

dont know if this pic will help identify whats what.

it looks to me that all should be working? i am just sat here wondering if maybe the wire does not tally up with a feed in my iso that came with the pioneer unit and thats why its not working.

Basically at the moment i have 2 adapters in there. One that the audi loom plus into and then the one my unit came with plugs into that.

you might need a remote relay, as your headunit might not put out enough power down the remote lead to work the aerial booster and the rear spakers.

the bit that you dont know about is the can-bus (or simular) stuff for the DIS display :)

so i take it i dont need that then as i have a non standard unit in there?

just found this from another post (hope link works)

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/aerial-adaptor-p-211.html

it seems its an adapter that enables you to use the roof monnted aerial amp.

i have noticed that my reception seems poor on the radio so is it possible that this has gone faulty and is causing all my problems?

is the aerial amp fused? is this worth checking?

You already have the antenna amp it's the long cylinder that also has a blue flying lead (the one listed as "what's this for" above).
My guess would be that the 2 flying leads for the rear amp and the antenna adapter are not getting 12v from the Pioneer HU.
The Pioneer will have a "Power Antenna" output. This may not go to the black ISO connector as it's sometimes just a flying lead hanging off the back of the HU. Check you're getting 12v on the blue lead when the HU is turned on. My gues is you won't be as the rear amp isn't working and the antenna amp adapter is not working.
Find the "power antenna" connection or even a "remote on" connection on the new HU and reconnect the blue wire to that. This should then sort both problems.

thanks andymac, knew i could depend on you, will let you know how i get on.

See the metal cage on the passenger side rear speaker that is the amp.

thanks everyone

got it sorted now. it was the blue remote wire had not been connected on the pioneer iso connector.

how simple was that:icon_thumright:

It usually is simple once you know what to look for - that's the beauty of this forum, so much valuable info on here.
