just standing by my car today,BANG! what the hell?

it sounded like something like a cable had snapped,sound of metal,now when driving get a knocking/rattling sound from the left side,back of the car....any ideas?

check the handbrake cable, mine snaped a few months ago, very strange, found it dangleing under the car...easy fix though?
