Do people think that remapping a 1998 A4 2.5 TDi with nearly 200,000 miles on it is asking for trouble? I like the performance of this engine, but a remap would help boost torque at low revs a bit and mean that the engine would not have to be revved as hard to get power, which might actually prolong it's life.

I had my Passat done at 218k, its now at 252k with no adverse affects, engine is still very strong.

If you have the same engine as me, then you may find that the only way is to get it re-chipped as remaps arent available for these motors.

I would imagine Simon at CCCtech.com will do it for you, he is a very nice bloke and does a good job.
I'd heard that it was not such a common remap... I'd prefer a remap than a new ecu, although I suppose I could keep the old one if I wanted to sell the car clean.

Just noticed you're in Worcester - if you want a recommendation for RSD go and speak to Listers. I know they get a lot of their tuning done through RSD, who are only in Daventry
I've now spoken to RSD and AMDtechnik (many thanks for the idea). RSD say that it is possible to remap the ECU (Oettinger actually do it), and that the likely power gain is about 30bhp, unfortunately the price is £595 +VAT. AMDtechnik on the other hand, say that whilst it's possible to remap the ECU, the likely power gain is only 10-15bhp as prior to 2001 the diesel pump on the 2.5TDi was rather puny and cannot supply enough fuel for decent gains. At only £400 this was a more reasonable price, but adds to the confusion about who is right.
Upsolute quote +32 bhp for your car, and I reckon that is say from £260 to £300 for your car and he will come to your house.
Cheers Banny, I looked at the Upsolute site and they do indeed suggest a +30bhp increase for the B5 A4. AMD said that there are 2 versions of the B5 A4, a old one and a facelift version. It is apparently the facelift version which has the uprated diesel pump. I shall try to check this both with Upsolute and Audi I think, as even though that price is competitive, it's not worth it for 10bhp!
