Starter Motor?

After turning the key to start, the starter motor seems to whine for a second after the engine has started... Not owned the car for long so not used to A2 quirks yet. Should I be concerned? It is an '02 1.4 38k petrol.

Does it sound like the starter is still engaged?
Had this on my A4 and the key switch wasn't returning after cranking the engine (key felt fairly loose when starting the car), eventually burnt out the starter motor. This was a real pain as a new keyswitch was only £22, and a DIY fit. Eventually cost me £150 for a new motor.

No, it doesn't sound as if it's still engaged, more like a high pitched whine after the engine starts up which tails off after a second or two. Hope I don't need a new starter motor, as Links in Macclesfield quoted about £117 for the part plus £435 labour!!!

Hi Scout
It may be the starter pinion sticking and not disengaging correctly due to clutch dust and rust etc on the pinion bendix shaft.
When the engine fires and the revs increase this kicks the pinion out of mesh so the whirring may be the starter overspeeding until this happens. Another symptom is that often a sticking pinion won't engage and the starter whirrs away without starting the engine.
Judging by the labour charge quoted for removal of the starter its not going to be easy to take off and clean the shaft

That sounds most plausible - when I find a decent Audi independant somewhere near Macclesfield I'll suggest that and see what he thinks. Will keep you posted. Thanks for the help...

£435 labour is only 4 hours at Audi stealer rates, so an independent will be less than half that cost.

hi
i get a simiular noise on my wifes a2 after you start it, been told its the solinoid on the started not disengageing, and need a new starter, was also getting a loud whine when started when we bought it, that was coming from the aux belt!
