Hi all,

Noticed the clutch pedal was feeling odd yesterday. Today it was still feeling funny, and on the way home tonight I could only hear what I'd describe as a rattling screech, which was intermittent. No music on the way home, just the windows down listening out for the noise.

So the clutch pedal is jerky. I parked up, released the clutch and the screeching was back, as soon as I dip the clutch it goes away - so I'm pretty much guessing it is the clutch bearing.

Therefore, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas how much a new clutch kit (clutch + flywheel + pressure plate kit I'm lead to believe?) would cost. It's an 1998 A3 1.8T (AGU engine code) for those that don't know me. It has an AmD remap. The miles are creeping up now, and I knew it was a matter of time until I needed a new one. I'm not particularly looking to uprate the clutch as I've been happy with the OEM.

By the state of teh sound, I think it's pretty obvious I need one ASAP, as I'm going to be off the road - which is a ******!

Thanks for any help / suggestions. Would there be any further tests I could do to fully check it is DEFINITELY the clutch?

£400 from GSF. Same as OEM. Make sure you get the slave cylinder changed at the same time.
 
Tell me about it - I'm still feeling bitter about it! The flywheel is the most expensive part. (then labour)
 
why do u need a new flywheel if the clutch release bearing has gone?
 
well I'm not entirely sure if it's the bearing. a friend who's a mechanic said it is likely to be that, but surely it's just worth replacing it all whilst it's off? plus because of the mileage, I thought it'd make sense.

any other ways to test and make sure?
 
That seems an awful lot to me. I think an OE Sachs kit is more like £125 plus 4 hours or so labour to fit it; the uprated Sachs kits (just bought on on a GB with SeatCupra.net) is about £500.

I'm a bit confused now actually. Do I NEED the flywheel, or is it just good practice to get it when putting the clutch in? Could anyone confirm the process?

A clutch and flywheel kit does not sound cheap in any respects....then labour on top. Is the sachs group buy finished? I'd assume it is if you have yours?

With regards to the flywheel, it's down to the individual case. I recently had my clutch changed as an oil seal had failed so there was oil contamination that was causing the clutch to slip. The flywheel was absolutely fine, so no need to change it.

I have heard reports though that badly worn clutches can damage the flywheel, but I think it's far from a matter of routine to replace the flywheel while the clutch is being done. Take the car to a good garage that know what they're doing and they'll be able to judge whether it needs changing or not.
 
The only way I could tell that my Flywheel had gone was because it was rattling and then when you pressed the clutch a little it stopped. The guys that fitted the new kit confirmed it was knackered.

Audi and a specialist conf to me back in Feb that they chnage the dual mass flywheel (S3) 99.9% of the time. i dont know why though but seems like it needs to be done. I drove one that didnt have it done and the clutch did not work properly at all - had to take the pedal right to the floor and the gearbox felt like it was baulking.

Same symptons? Also my pedal dropped to the floor a few times aswell. No more F1 starts for me. I take it easy now - don't really trust it!
 
yeah - same symptoms: the noise that is there until ya did the clutch. not had the pedal drop to the floor though, just felt 'jerky'. it's been quite sudden - no signs of wear, just in the past 2 days. grrr. I'm a pretty conservative driver really - never thrash it in 1st gear. I guess it's the age.
 
Unlucky geez, hope you get it sorted soon.

I didn't need a flywheel, when my gearbox decided to exploded and take the clutch with it, so might be worth getting it looked at first?

Thanks for the post. I'm planning on getting it looked at. Havin spoken to a mechanic friend at work it could be a number of things....shame he's not allowed to do any work on staff cars anymore :(

Out of curiosity, can anyone confirm if it's a Dual Mass Flywheel?

haha, i did! the old final drive blew up at 60mph on the A31, sent planet gears into the gearbox casing itself, and into the bell housing destroying the flywheel!

im fairly sure its a dual mass flywheel on both the A3 and the S3 isnt it?

Wasn't that funny when your transmission locks up at around 55mph on a damp M42, think my quick reactions saved me actually lol.

hi I've been told that my flywheel needs replacing (s3,03 with 37k) but then another garage told me it was the gearbox.....how do I know which one's right? It's gonna cost £605 for clutch, flywheel and master slave, or £495 for a reconditioned gearbox.....what should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.... thanks

more like double that! mr clutch quote 7 hours Audi quote 8 hours and two other garages have quoted me 6-7 hours! :sorry:

I got a used box for £300, if the gearbox is coming out, you should really change the clutch also, as most of it is labour. I had my gearbox fitted along with a new clutch for £225 labour, I supplied the clutch which was around 160 and of course the gearbox.

Well the car sounds very diesel like when I start it and when its idling but when I press the clutch all the way down the noise stops, also if you put your foot on the clutch pedal it vibrates slightly. Sometimes the gears are not as smooth as they used to be (very rarely), its just mostly the noise.

Shysters and rip-off merchants. VAGTech did my clutch in four hours. Anyone who tells you it can't be done is either crap or having you on.

If it rattles and vibrates the whole car it sounds like the same as mine - new flywheel is required. but might be worth getting the garage that said gearbox needs replacing to do that and if they are wrong make sure you get the flywheel done at their cost.
