2002 TDI 130 - Front Suspension worries

I have read that the front suspension can give problems
How do you know if it might be on the way out?

Here is my scenario, short and sweet...

Non quattro, take a right hander at say 50mph(wide bend spped acceptable)
and I get oversteer?? I have had it happen a couple of times where some lock was required.

Needless to say the wife thinks I'm doing it on purpose.
Dealer had told me an arm needed replacing, but last service they said it was OK.

Seems dangerous to me, and my confidence is a bit shook really.

Could this be reported issues with front suspension?

2002 with about 75k on the clock, if that helps?
 
Has no-one any thoughts on this? The car definitely feels unstable on left --> right corners, especially if they are long corners.

I just don't want anything to fail at speed thats all (touch wood!)
 
Sounds a little like what I had on my 2001 A4 1.8T except it was the steering rack that eventually failed, mine used to make a knocking noise when on a full lock and it had loads of oversteer, I had my mechanic check all the bushes and arms and there was never a problem until one day the whole power steering failed while I was crossing under the new Dundrum luas bridge, all the oil drained out of the rack, it was like trying to steer a german tank, brought it to dealer who just re filled the rack again with fluid, 3 miles later the same thing happened this time it leaked out all over the road while the mechanic was road testing it, so 2 weeks later a new rack was fitted.

Yes got it done at the stealer, they originally wanted €2000 parts & labour, but the car was just 3 weeks outside the manufacturers waranthy so after threatning my solicitor on them they reluctanly took ful resposibility. Originally they wanted me to pay €500, the garage €500 and Audi Irl topay €1000 but as I only had the car 3 months I wasn't prepared to except that.
 
I wont be so lucky so. The car is 5 years old so out of manufacturers warranty and I didnt buy it from them, so if that is the problem and it does go, very expensive proposition...!!
 
Have you added new wheels lately, I was talking to a guy who changed the original 16" alloys on his 1.8T for 18"reps, he said the car tram lined, under and over steered very badly, in the end he refitted the 16" as he was afraid his wife might get caught out with the tram lining! Just a thought?
 
Nope, I was actually thinking of getting some 17 star replicas for the car.
You think it might do the opposite and fix the problem? :)
 
Just got a new set of tyres for the existing set of 16 wheels.
Car now pulls to the left, so I am definitely suspicious of this non-existent
left front suspension arm problem that the steeler said was a non-issue.

Maybe the front left wheel is pointing slightly out left as a result of susp.
arm being bent/damaged. Troule is, is that I had a quick look when the wheel was off for
tyre and it looked ok at a glance??

hello mate,
just to let you know the bigger your wheels the more it will pull to follow the camber of the road ie: most roads are tilted to the left for drainage most cars with firm suspension will follow this camber, and drift to the left on a stright road causing a left hand pull.

a easy way to check your tracking is firstly check your tyre pressure and then find a level road ie large indoor carpark or a stight narrow road where the camber of the road is in the middle of the car, if your car still drifts your trackings out, this would answer your steering problems,

but make sure you go to a good alignment place to get it sorted as the back of the car is fully adjustable and the front subframe has only a bit of give but the toe might be out even by 1/2 a degree, which would make a difference, or if the backs out the a4's trend to crab!
