Looking at purchasing an S3 is a little while and just wondered about your thoughts on high milage examples currently on sale, for example I have seen two 2001 models, one with 50k on the clock and the other with 120k on the clock, a 2001 model with all the bits with 120k on the clock can be picked up for around £7000 with the other well over £10000.

Do you think it is worth the risk buying a high milage model, assuming it has got FSH? I really only use it on 30 mile round trips to work and back, and the occasional dodge about at a weekend when I'm not drunk! ;-)

From pictures I've seen of these they're still in very good condition for the milage, as it would appear the interior is pretty good at hiding the amount of milage the car has done.

False economy, or worth the risk?

why not go for something around the 80K mark, that way when you come to sell it it will prob still be under 100K and easier to sell ? if you buy @ 120K, when you come to sell it @ prob 130 - 140K, buyers will be having the same dilema as you ....

Mine has 83K and no probs and drives really well, i have full black leather and your right the interior does hide the mileage well, the recaros are top quality leather , ive had a few BMW's and the leather in BM's does not wear well. Ive been really impressed by the S3 ....i just fear for my licence !

go after 60k as you have a major service then

ie cambelt and waterpump would need replacing.dont think high milers would put me off as long as they had full audi/specialist history and all the paperwork to back it up.dont let remapped cars put you off either i would say nearly 50% of s3 have been remapped but as long as the work has been done by a reputable tuner and the cars been serviced reularly.speaking for myself i would stear clear of ads that seem remotely suspect.we have had a good laugh on here at cars advertised to be something they are not.for instance have you heard the one about the man who owned the s3 s line ?

good luck with your search i am sure if you need any advice there is a wealth of knowledgable people on this site that could advise you.

i just bought that one in my avatar done 100k today ticked over as i got home,
high milers shouldn't put you off as long as it has FSH and no cowboy owners, the 1.8T engine is a workhorse and one of the best engines around! i picked mine up for £7.5k FASH, just had cambelt, clutch and flywheel and new bushes all round done by audi total of £2800! i have the receipt to prove thats what you need to look for! A good history!
mines a remapped 210 by superchips uk to 265bhp and they did the DV to forge, samco hoses, well looked after, couple of chips here and there but its done 100k! but still goes like stink!
GERMAN ENGINES FOR THE WIN!!

I had noticed that a lot of advertised S3's where remapped to 265bhp, what exactly does this do when you come to insure the car. A lad I work with has a TT 225 and was considering a remap, but he claims that he wouldn't have been able to insure it?

I'm 30 years old, have six points, the car will probably end up on the driveway and not in a garage, and unfortunatley for car insurance I live in Sunderland, which I have been told is one of the higher risk areas! :faint:

So how much should I expect my premium to go up, and will all insurance companies take on modified motors?

At 30 unless you've had alot of claims in the last few years i wouldnt think you will pay much more, get a few quotes - i reckon with the right insurance co. maybe an extra 50 quid

im 32, i have 10 yrs NCB and my insurance is 650 on my S3 (its standard), i live in old trafford and because my post code covers moss side i get hammered every year ! I did a quote on my mates address in a better postcode and it came out at £350 !!!!!!!

when i renewed this month i phoned around everywhere ...nearly all quotes over a grand, i tried adrian flux, they quoted me £1200 !!! Funny thing is that when i first passed my test and had zero NCB they quoted me £1000 on a Mk2 Golf Gti !! (obviously i jumped at it as i'd been quoted £900 on a 1.1 !!!!!)

My brothers insurance company would not let him put a bigger set of alloys on his car! they said they would cancel the insurance ! again, i think this is because of the postcode, so if you live in a 'Hot' postcode area, i get quotes beore even considering any car.

trigger you could always ring and ask i am sure if you explain the car is going to be used for dmestic and pleasure purposes and wont be used for track days the premium wont be that much higher

i'm 21 live in a "good" area garaged overnight and my tuned S3 is £706 with 4 years no claims!
the other quotes i got were £1200+ silly
yay S3.

When my mate had his chipped the insurance company said they were happy with a power increase of less than 25% so a 225 to 265 bhp is ok......a 210 to 265 is not ok!!!! still an increase in premium whatever, but will depend on your insurance company.

As for high milers - i bought mine at 80k - got pump and cambelt changed immediately and it's been largely trouble free except for an incident with a badger!!!! a few niggles coming in but nothing major.

I think you always end up paying somewhere....either up front cost or in running, and if you are unlucky - both!
