My 2001 S3 (60,000 miles) has decided to start screeching first thing in the morning when reversing out the garage. Doesn't seem to do it any other time.
Anybody any ideas?

Auxilliary drive belt on its way out, when its cold and engine has just started there is a high load on the alternator which can cause the belt to slip.

Sounds similar to what I have, is there a way to check or is it a stealer job?

No way, do it yourself, The chances are if you have passed 3yrs or 60k then it needs to be changed, its only about 15 quid and about 10 minutes to fit it on a TDI (which I have) I don't expect it to be much different on your engine. I did own a 1.8 turbo some time ago although I didn't keep it long enough to change the belt.

How worried should i be, e.g. similar to timing belt going, etc? Or put it another way, how quickly should i look to getting it sorted?

The worst that will happen is the steering will become heavy and the alternator will stop running, but its nowhere near as serious as the timing belt.
As with all things, get it done as soon as you can...

if near 60k its due a timing belt, and with the timing belt they usually change the aux belts.. it if goes loose you may well find yourself stranded, as the charging circuit will break down, no alternator.... not very far to drive, esp with lights/radio etc on

Hi guys my car has started to do this, but i have noticed that if i leave the heaters off it never makes this noise!!! then when i turn the heaters on it makes the noise.
Any ideas?
Andy

The car's now had timing belt, etc replacement which included the auxilliary drive belt but is still screeching in the mornings!

Any other thoughts?

My car screeches when started up usually in mornings only for some reason, varies from maybe 1 second to 5-6. I know thats down to the air con compressor, if you have the climate turned off and try to start the car in the morning see if that stops the noise.

My car does the same in the morning when i start it up and the climate control is on. switch off the climate control till you have driven at least 2 miles so the car can warm up and the noise never comes.
not sure why that is though, maybe something to do with the car being cold on initial startup.:jump:

Exactly the same with mine, just have to leave the climate control off when starting up!

hmm yeah tryed it and that seems to work.
so i have it off all the time now hehe

good question,great replies..
my car recently has started to screech wen pulling off at low revs, and the steering has become slightly heavy..could this be due to a worn auxilary drive belt?
cheers fellas

Try and listen to locate where the screech is coming from, start the car with the bonnet open if you have to. A drive belt slip screech is quite distinctive.
You could also have worn bearing on the heater blower motor if thats whats screeching.
The other possibility is that the extra load placed on the engine as a result of the fan spinning is causing the alternator to supply an extra load to the battery casuing the belt to slip. Try starting the car with the climate controls set to off but with the heated rear screen, headlights and wipers on and see if that makes it screech also.
