Hi all,

I'm brand new here. Have just been looking at an S3 today at a dealer. We (the girlfriend and I) have been looking at a few different makes and models of car but we both really like this Audi. It is as follows;

'01 Y S3 45k, full audi history, 2 owners. Silver. £10,995. Has full black leather heated Recaro seats, Audi symphony radio with 6 cd changer, BOSE speakers, cruise control, centre armrest, and some other options (about £4.5k worth as original receipt was still in handbook.)

It's in really mint condition. Is it worth the money or should I be paying less?

Also the dealer (who is non-Audi) stated it would need a cambelt change doing which he could do for £250. This apparently means taking the front bumper off. I phoned the local Audi dealer who quoted £360 all-in.

Any help or advice would be most welcome. Thanks.

Rob

Not bad price forma dealer. I'd get him to do the cambelt all in, he should not be selling a car he is not happy to warranty for a few months at least!

Belt would eb worth doing IMO and waterpump, adjusters etc. welcome to the forum too BTW

Car sounds nice, as before get him to pay for the belt change it'll cost him nothing in real terms and he doesnt need to take the bumper off just the tray underneath it.

Sounds ok to me. I got my cambelt done about 3 weeks ago. £345. Make sure he puts a new water pump on too.

Yeah it will be i would think, but you'd be hard push to notice the difference anyway

Also worth noting that the car should have had a haldex service at 40k, check the history to see if this has been done and get him to do it if its not been done.

Also, I went back to have a look at it last night and the front offside headlamp is slightly misted. Is this normal or will it need replacing (they are xenon headlights). The car has been stood for a couple of weeks on the forecourt. As well as that, when I drove it there was a lot of steam (white smoke) coming from the exhaust. I assumed that was because it was cold (the car) and was damp outside but I think worn turbos put out white smoke as well. How can I check what it is?

Ideas?

Thanks in advance

Best way is to take the car for a longer testdrive(if its just moisture in the exhaust the white smoke should dissappear), i always like to have atleast a half hour testdrive before buying a car. If you cant, stick your hand over the tailpipe while its running, if it has a strong smell of oil walk away if it just smells like normal exhaust fumes its just condensation

No, the garage was closed when I went back last night. I'm hopefully going back Sat to have another look and a longer test drive. I take it I'm just looking for the 40k stamp in the book or is there something else.

Also, I have just read the thread on the rusty doors. Where should I be looking on the door itself and will it be visible without dismantling the car??!! Does it affect all A3/S3's?

It depends who did the service, on each service slot in the service book there is a numbers of boxes that may be ticked, you are looking for the "additional work" section to have the 40k box ticked. It may have had a service around 40k but if this box isnt ticked then it probably hasnt been done. The car may be on AVS which means even with full history it may not have been serviced for upto 18k or 2 years

I think last service was July 2006. And yeah, I think it is on LongLife servicing. Has about 4/5 stamps in the book, all Audi main agent.

I'm just trying to remember now! Er, actually I think it was four but I will know more on Sat (if it's still for sale!)

The Haldex oil should have been changed at 20k miles, and then both the Haldex oil and filter done at 40k. It's next one will be just the oil again.

The xenon light misting up is nothing to worry about. Usually happens if it's been raining or if the car's just been washed.

Thanks for that. It had just been raining.

That's a very low price for a car with that mileage and spec.
If it all checks out I'd go for it, but my only advice would be very careful!
If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Well looked after cars are still fetching quite a bit more than that, if you go on audi used car finder, 03/53 cars are still fetching £17k, the car you are looking at is only a couple of yours older yet £6k less in price. Remember the dealer will have money in it, so he probably bought the car for £8-9K. Why is it so cheap? Check panel fit/damage - when I was looking for mine 3 years ago there we're a few neglected cars kicking around!!!
Good luck mate!
