1997 Audi A4 1.8.t Sport 108.000 miles...

That old debate again 5w/30 or 5w/40 ...when I speak to most mechanics majority say 5w/30 every time..

Might go for VAG Quantum fully syth...5w/30 good enough for Audi I suppose..

I hate to open this can of worms, especially with Gaz because he's often a relentless PITA (no offence)...

But 5w30 is for long life servicing, which is an absolute joke and does more harm than good. . .

5w30 is too thin for these engines, especially a 20+ year old... You'd be mad to follow the long life servicing interval set out by Audi!

A decent fully synth 5w40 and regular changes all the way (every 6k or so)

Oh for God's sake , it's higher quality , universal and a fraction thinner at 100°C , some people will never learn and don't want to learn .

There seems a idea that both the Quantum Platinum 5w/30(plus) or 5w/40 would be best suited for our cars...5w/30 being thinner

Was not going to use Long Life anyway

The 504.00 5W30 LongLife is better at anti wear etc and combating the main 1.8T enemy - sludge , due to it's higher concentration in the additive package of detergents and dispersants because it's ment to last a fantasy 20K .

What VW specs is the 5W30 Platinium Plus ?

Quantum Platinum Plus --5w/30 -VW 502.00/505.00/505.01

Quantum Platinum --5w/40 -VW 502.00/505.00/505.01

The 5w/40 being better for sludge apparently..(not creating it of course)

To be honest had some leaking issues after using Mobile 1... 0w/40 for a few years having to renew seals and gaskets and breather box and pipes..need a bit thicker oil..

Both Platinum's will work with the VW spec just down to what you prefer 5w/30 or 5w/40

I don't think that will help as fully synthetic oil molecules are smaller on average and more uniform regardless of viscosity .

Will the Platinum 5w/40 be better on the hotter longer runs and the Platinum 5w/30 be better in colder conditions but not so good if you give it some long runs wellie...

I presume the sludge when you think about it can be abeited by more regular oil changes.say 3-4,000 miles..reguardless of what oil you use...which goe's against the Long Life use..

Thicker only comes into it with prolonged full throttle application like Autobhan , track etc promoting high oil temps where a 50 grade would be useful . Or if the engine is using oil with worn piston rings .

Go thicker and you pay the price in mpg especially in warm up everyday .

What's the Platinium 5W30 specs ?

Quantum Platinum Plus --5w/30 -VW 502.00/505.00/505.01
ACEA C3
API SN/SM

Quantum Platinum 5w/40 VW 502.00/505.00/505.01

So what you are saying you got to find a 5w/30 Fully Synth with a VW 507.00 Spec or 504.00

Looks like to get that vw spec you need a Long Life Brand..only change at 3-4,000

Yeah and I change with LongLife every 6 months covering as little as 1,300 miles .

LongLife is Universal , higher quality and a similar price .

505.00-507.00 say's It's for Vw cars 2005 onwards acording to their specs...are we over egging this a bit...

I appreciate the info and the spec tables...but what you have left out is the massive difference with what you are using it for...all the stats and figures that have been drawn up have been for modern day cars..2005 plus onwards...

Our cars are well over 20 years old and therefore is not the same beast..
you can only sumize what will happen in our cars and this debate about what is best 30w or 40w long life not long life will continue for that very reason..

I don't think there is a lot between them to be honest and you would not be doing wrong choosing either..
I think the most important thing is not so much the oil but how often you change it in a engine that can cause trouble if not by doing so..

Regular oil changes is the key when the oil loses it's golden colour which is about 3-4,000 miles...

There’s two issues with long life oil/servicing if you ask me…

1. The actual length VW/Audi say you can go without a service. When you take apart an engine that’s adhered to long life servicing at the higher end of the recommended service interval they are disgusting inside… Long life servicing is nothing more than a sales gimmick

2. Most of us on this forum are at some level of tune, and enjoy the occasional enthusiastic drive. And when these engines/turbo’s get hot (as small framed turbo’s inherently do) 5w30 is just too thin IMO...

Yes you can counteract point 1 with more regular servicing like you have Gaz. And in which case, for every day pootling around, I’d agree you may indeed be better off running 5w30.

However if you drive your car like you mean it, 5w40 all the way. . . If you’ve ever parked up your car while the turbo is a little hot, 5w40 WILL provide better protection for when you next turn the key, fact.

I fully believe 5w40 is better suited to the way I used my car. And I think that’s probably what it comes down to. Which to be fair none of us have asked!? . . However even if long life oil is best suited to you, the service interval it’s self is still a joke!

If you put my car reg in the Opie oil listing shop they will tell you I need a 10w/40 semi synthetic oil is reccomended...

You are completely at the hands of speculation when dealing with what must be said is an old car..

You could get different versions from many web sites to say what is the best for your car...

Yea, Opie recommended a 10w40 semi synth for my 1.9tdi... Needles to say I did not take their recommendation!

Having pondered and thought about it I need an alternative to Mobil 1 ..0w/40 ...that is now looking more like the Quantum Platinum 5W/40 Fully synthetic..from TPS..(Audi)

At the moment is at the grand price of £13.34 on offer at the moment for 5l should be around £26.00

If you are wondering what Quantum is it was made by Castrol now made by Fuchs...

At that price you would have no quams about changing it every 3,000 miles...

I think the key is get it changed often at the right price..

Yeah thanks for your input everyone especially Gazwould's...

Gone with the Quantum Platinum 5W/40 at £13 (it's half price) it's a no brainer...

Would have stuck with Mobil 1 but for the leaking Rocker and crankshaft seal and camshaft seal plus Crankcase Breather Box and Various pipes that fit to it....ect ect...

Who know's might not have been the oil but I was warned on here about Mobil 1 ...

Cannot take the chance again so moving to a slightly thicker oil having to replace that lot among other bits while I'm at it...

Auf Wiedersehen as they say in the land of Audi....

Lol .

£13 for 5L ?

What is all this thicker oil about , 1 CentiStoke in most cases , a single grade varies by about 4 .

It's 2018 folks and the thinner oils fully synthetic protect more than the thicker semi , mineral oils and even some other fully synthetics .

Oil quality is all about the oil basestock groups and additive package concentration nothing else not even who makes it .

You have opted for the medium quality oil that gives you less protection , more sludge and less mpg .

No No No.....To quote the Quantum spec it's a PREMIUM high performance low ash engine oil specially developed for petrol and diesel engines..

Fully synthetic and all the VW spec is there TPS sold it me not just some Asda type Super market and they only sell gen VW/Audi....no way it's medium quality my man..

As for the sludge I have thought for a while guy's run their engines forever only changing it when the moon is Blue...oil changes at 3-4,000 that is key for the sludge problem...

Quantum was made by Castrol now by Fuchs so I'm told...the can as a sticker on it saying developed and made for Audi GB

Real price is nearly £30 but for a special offer ending soon...I was drawn into that stick a Mobil 1 sticker on it and charge nearly £60 for it and people will think it's twice as good...

Also I have done 108.000 miles without the need for Additive Package Concentration..or commonly known as Oil...

Specs !

Alot of oil are described ( marketing ) as high quality , special URD formulation etc .

Medium quality as defined by VW who's spec it is !

Gaz you are getting quite Anal about these facts and figures representing cars that we don't drive ....

I'm sure the engines have moved on over 20 odd years and we have to take that into account your figures show what you can expect from modern day cars of which ours are not...

I have that feeling with the lack of thread interest that I can hear the members saying "No don't wind Gaz up about the oil"..

Am I right or am I right...LoL

It's hard work , God forbid if it was a GCSE subject .

It's not anal it's correct .

People don't get it , but to me it's crystal .

Even Spiderman knows !

Gaz you really mean well and appreicated I'm sure on this forum but there is only so much you need to know about the workings of oil in a car...

Your head will explode thinking about additives cleansers and the like ..it's oil at the end of the day and before you say it's the Blood and Lifeline of the car..I know that and am quite happy with my choice and I will sleep better knowing that..

You Gaz can get ready for the next victim that dares to mention Oil on this Forum....

I rest my case "Melud"

ps. You should be more worried about what "Comrade Putin" is up to again...
