Hi, I bought a Halford's calcium battery for my Wife's A3 last February (2017) and she was saying it's a bit slow to start in the mornings and so on so had a look yesterday. The battery indicator says it needs charged, so we took it a run, no better. I put a multi metre on it and it was 12.20 volts and over 14 with the engine running, so charging fine, so headed to Halfords.
Now the last time I had battery issues, different car and quite a few years ago, I had done a few checks and it wasn't holding a charge, they believed me and just replaced it with another battery, the same and extended the warranty for a further 4 years. I noted on the paperwork this time that if the battery needed changing the warranty on the new unit would only have the same warranty as the old one, not a major issue this time as we still have almost 3 years left but noted none the less.
So they ran some tests, fancy Yuasa scanner and the verdict was everything is fine, maybe the car needs a good run or I could buy a charger. So when I got home I took the battery out and charged it on my Garage quality charger and re-fitted it. This morning it was reading 12.30 after sitting over night but the indicator is still the same, "needs charged".
I am interested in peoples views of this, should I be pushing the line that the indicator is telling us there is a problem, therefore it should be replaced or are they not that reliable (my experience). Do you think the good charge has done the trick or can we expect issues again soon. I did say to them it's the Wife's car and I don't want her breaking down but they didn't seem that interested.
I am also interested in people's recent experiences of Halfords, this may just be me but I am a Trade card holder and had an idea what I got discount on, (drives me mad actually, you get a discount on this but not that rubbish) but when I was on the site recently I noticed there are loads of things I don't get discount on now, e.g. I am sure I used t get discount on all Halford's tools but not any more! Are they tightening up? I did wonder if I just wen to another Halfords? Appreciate any advice ideas etc :)

I would go by your reading and see how it goes. These indicators arent much help. They only work on one cell and I liked the old style where you could take the caps off and use a hydrometer to see if any cell was low.Is the A3 a diesel?I found my 2.5tdi harder to start in the recent freeze probably cos its 04 and still has the original plugs but now back to normal and starts first time.I always go for a good brand which should give longer life for only little extra if you buy online

Yes it is Diesel, I have one too though and it's been OK, I also remembered the last battery I charged is an old one I use for jump starts, been siting about a week and still at 12.70.

The latest is I gave the battery a good charge off the car but once it had time to settle it only reads just over 12 volts, 12.20ish. Add couple of unused days at the weekend and it was 11.96, does this not sound like a battery with a problem, just not sure how to convince Halfords.

Assuming your charger is fully charging that battery it's very much duff. Around 12v is only 40% capacity.

Just out of interest do you have any extra equipment in the car such as a camera that operates all the time. These can cause big issues with the battery as it is being continually drained beyond what it would normally do.

Nope, no extra equipment and yes the charger is not that old and it's a proper commercial garage style Sealey on,e so capable of charging anything, bricks, bits of wood, you know the kind of thing :)
I have had a battery replaced by Halfords before, not this car and they were totally fine about it, took my word and no question, must be different after 10 years or so of austerity I guess.
Come to think of it maybe I would be better with a block of wood, cheers for the link and reply :thumbs up:

I think that Halfords is feeling the squeeze in consumer spending and is changing its trading model a bit, pity Maplin did not think about doing that 20 year ago!
I'm sure that I "bumped" into a comment, from Halfords, that they were stopping the area of activity that allowed you access to other maybe Halfords partners, "stuff" as web orders, there was maybe a Sealey jack that sounded a lot like the ones that I have and should consider replacing soon, that is not available elsewhere.

We got the battery changed, still quite reluctantly but at least the right outcome in my opinion. It seems one company are calling the shots now on Batteries and they don't like Halfords policy of changing them when there's a problem. They feel it makes them look bad as it increases the amount of batteries designated as "faulty". So even though they didn't supply all the batteries when we got ours, nor did they make ours, they don't want to replace it, so our local manager did it as a goodwill gesture.
Personally I don't care what they call it, I felt it should be replaced and it was but it doesn't bode well for the future. They have supplied Halfords with fancy scanners to help them wriggle out of replacing the batteries, in the flawed belief replacing will reflect badly on them, well the news is, "poor customer service" will be an even worse reflection on them both, so I hope they (Halfords and Yuasa) realise before it's too late!

I had a Yuasa replaced by Halfrauds with no quibble , then that let me down so returned that, had to cause a scene to get that replaced which reluctantly they did, that one's been fine.

I think causing a scene is more important now than before, we were beginning to get overheard in the car-park and the manager had been refusing to do anything despite all my arguments, then he uttered the words "I'll replace it if you like" hinting but there's nothing actually wrong with it and I quickly said "OK, that's all I wanted anyway" :)

Stick with Varta. , Cheaper and better quality than any Halfrauds battery unless it's a Bosch, who Varta make. But the equivalent Varta battery would probably 40% cheaper than the Bosch at Halfrauds.

Have to say I agree, I have had several Vartas, all good and currently have the original in my A3, still going strong :)
The Wife's car came with a Moll battery though and I hadn't seen one before, turned out they are quite common. I have a Halfords trade card and so get their batteries fairly cheap, we have had a few and most have been good, I have only had to get one replaced before, it had a 4 year warranty and was replaced at 3 years old with no question.
I have been getting a bit worried about Varta though, heard they are not owned by the same company and not made in the same factory now, so wondered if they are really the same as the old school Vartas?
