I have had my A3 sportback for 2 months now and I'm very dissapointed with the lack of feedback in the steering! The car handles reasonably well but surely it shoul d have more life than this!

Anyway rant over as otherwise I'm really pleased with the car.

how about lowering the car and adding an aftermarket anti roll bar?

should please you a bit more

how about selling it and getting a beemer?

should please you more

Lowering it wouldn't help steering feedback though would it?

As I said the handling is fine!

Change the VAGCOM steering boost settings to ge a feel that you like

Chris.

check the power steering fluid

Can't see what difference that's going to make.
Audis (certainly both I've had) come with all the steering feel of an arcade game from new.
As the original post says, they're not bad handling motors but they definitely rely on the driver's faith that the grip is there, rather than giving any meaningful feedback.
When my car starts to slide,I feel it through the pedals and seat.
Nothing,zilch,through the steering.

well if there's no p.s fluid then the steering is not going to work properly. :tocktock:

There isnt any power steering fluid the steering is electrically boosted I.E servotronic.

Will changing the amount of boost though VAG-COM actually make a difference in the kind of feedback you through the steering wheel or will it just make the steering heavier? I would guess the feedback has more to do with the mechanical design than with the amount of boost.

what nobody reads reviews before buying a car here?
Thought everyone knew that if you wanted steering feedback then dont buy an Audi.

Yes I read reviews but just can't believe how little feedback in the steering there is. Even my previous Mazda 6 had loads of feel to tell you what the wheels are doing.

1. if you want a sports car buy one... ie, a lotus, MX-5, go-kart whatever - don't buy an audi then complain it isn't a sports car - it isn't meant to be.

2. i think you will find they do have power steering fluid - its just that rather than being driven by an engine driven pump like normal systems its driven by an electric pump - hence electromechanical. Power steering is still hydraulic in any case.

I didn't say I wanted a sports car, just something with a little bit of feel! Surely if Ford can do it with Focus's Mondeo's etc then Audi can do it!

The steering feel may also depend on your model. For example, my SE arrived on 16" wheels and when I fitted 17s, the steering was much improved.

Having said all that, I agree with the other posts - the A3 doesn't have the best steering feel. It's handling is more competent than exciting, but that's not the most important thing to me so I'm quite happy.

Yes I'm very pleased with the car in every other area. As this is my first Audi i still can't get over the build quality! It's mainly Jap cars i've had before and the differenceis huge!

It's the Sport model by the way.

i have got a Sportback courtesy car today and the steering is very light and less re-sponsive than my A3. dont really like it to be honest as i feel more in control in my own car

Sory Steve - Don't agree with either point.

The last vehicle I drove with as little steering feedback as my A3 was a 1970 Bedford CA van!

If a Hillman Imp, a Daf 66, a Triumph Dolomite, Austin Maestro, Fiat Punto, Toyota Yais, Ford Mondeo and two Alfa 156s can manage to generate some feedback through the steering wheel, why can't the A3?

We're not talking about "sports car" feel, just some feedback to the driver of what the front wheels are doing and how close they are to breaking away.....

And on the second point (which I think is actually the root cause of the issue), I think you'll find that the A3 steering really is just assisted by an electric motor rather than the electric motor simply driving a hydraulic pump.

All of the new "electrically assisted steering" cars recently have had very poor write-ups of steering response.

The new electric systems are cheaper to fit than the old hydraulic systems and they're more economical bacause they only use power when you're actually turning the wheel rather than pumping fluid to maintain hydraulic pressure all the time, but they all get p155 poor write-ups in the press.

Meh, I disagree. While that's true on summer, I think the steering works better in icy conditions, it's actually giving feedback very well.

If you want max steering response, why didnt you buy a premium sports car or better still a go kart!? - I also wouldnt say the A3 steering gives great feedback, but you have to ask yourself - should it?? - at the end of the day its a small family car designed mainly with comfort / practicality in mind.

The steering feel does increase massively increase with less steering boost. I will never know why audi have set it to so much assistance when it feels so nice with alot less. It is still not in the same league as BMW for feel but it is miles better than when it comes from the factory.

Not strictly true imo mate.....

I had a MKV GTI (itself a small pratical family car albeit a 'GTI') before my current A3 and the steering 'feel' in the GTI is a great deal better than the A3
Bear in mind that my particular A3 as the S-Line version is marketed as the 'sporty' version and it shares many suspension components with the GTI, and whilst the ultimate handling ability of both cars is as near as dammit the same, to me anyway, it is strange that the A3 lacks 'feel' compared to the GTI...
Nothing that some steering boost adjustments in vag-com can't sort though, i recommend a '3'..
