So, my C7 saloon runs flawlessly, it’s a lovely place to be and it’s served me well for the last 2 years while doing a 75mile round trip 4 days a week.

The problem wasn’t the car, it was the job!
I have now changed job/companies and am currently riding my bike most days the 4miles each way.
The job is great and permanent, but the office is temporary and in the next 4-6weeks we are moving to the new premises with parking and a workshop, this is more like 14miles door to door.

Now the reason for considering a C5 is:
A. that I want out of car payments, too many other things like family holidays that 300quid a month can be spent on.
B. Saloon is far less practical than estate/hatchback, this C7 is the first saloon I have had for a decade and I now remember why I sold the last one.
C. I fancy a V8 or Bi-turbo, I know they are going to be a fair bit more work, but I can ride my bike or motorbike to work if I need a few down days.

So I have found a couple of C5 Avants that with a raid of the piggy bank I can buy and get out of my car payment.

What are the pitfalls living with a 140k C5?

The V8 was quite leaky

The bi-turbo seems in much better shape than the V8 and comes with a full history and has the 5hp serviced with ZF parts 3K ago

I have been fortunate to own 2 s6 (c5) and the 2.7bi turbo (which was even rare as it was manual). Don't get me wrong there is nothing nicer sounding than the v8 (also had a c5 Rs6 avant but that's a completely different level between the other two and if money was no object it would be rs all the way).
Anyway back to the s6 and bi-turbo. In terms of pace there was very little between them and if I was to pick one my ideal c5 would be a 2.7 manual avant in an s6 wide body. And it's for that reason that I'm planning to convert my s6 to manual.
I have also fixed 2 of the 5hp boxes in my time and I'm a diy tinkerer. Good boxes but manual wins every time.
If you could find a manual 2.7 quattro (mines had recaro leather) snap it up as they are a fraction of the cost of the v8, better mpg to. Tell you what find me good manual 2.7t avant and I will swap my s6 (maybe) . Sorry for the ramble but hope this helps

It’s great first hand info, thanks for chipping in.
The 2.7T is in very good condition for the age and has had the 5hp serviced twice (89 and 139k) and the cam belts done (I hope for the second time) at the 139k service. Receipts to prove.
The V8 has a tick in the box for a ‘ribbed belt service’ and ‘toothed belt service’ at 117k, the owner hasn’t any paperwork and assumes this was the chains/tensioners done, tried to call the garage that did this service but never got through, I’m skeptical about this so I think the V8 is out of the running.

I got the info of the shop they serviced the 2.7 from 100-140k, 4 services, they did answer and recalled the car and told me lots about it and the previous owner, totally different story with this car, it is top of the list.

Sounds like the 2.7 is the winner. Going by that info I would be in the same court. Plus the 2.7 is a nicer colour. If I didn't have 3 audis in my drive at the. Moment I would be tempted for that 2.7.

Almost tempted to push a swap my s6 (and it has an lpg conversion)

I love those big arches on the A6 V8 and S6.

I have had a car converted to LPG before, a Lexus V8. It was a great place to be and cost less to run than my wife’s diesel 307SW of the time.

I’ve put a deposit on the deal with the 2.7 :)

Cool stuff. When do you collect ?

Tuesday.
Already scanning eBay for age appropriate RNS-D nav unit and I would really like heated front seats, but apart from that I will likely just have a light tint on the windows and enjoy.

The deal is done and the C7 is replaced with a C5!

Now I need to figure out how to fix the door sensor as my light buzzer and interior lights don’t come on when I open the drivers door

Did you manage to find a suitable replacement ? I have just replaced a boring, 100% reliable 2009 saab and gone back to a c5 a6 (in 2.5TDi Quattro flavour) and it has the same issue.

I did what I’m sure others have done, I contacted all the eBay sellers advertising 4B1941531F - (RHD) light switch cover and asked them if that’s what they actually had, as all of them had actual pictures of 4B1941531E the Left drive switch.

Some accepted that they had the wrong pic and therefore didn’t have what I wanted, others point blank refused to accept that there was 2 part numbers for L & R drive cars and the ‘E’ they advertised as ‘F’ was good for both.

I bought the cheapest £2.80 one and I’m sure it will be an ‘E’ and may not fit correctly, even if it does fit, the decals will be upside down, but at less than 3 quid it’s worth a punt.

Fair enough, if you have an eBay link that you could share that would be appreciated - and let us know how you get on with the part you have ordered

Thanks

The one I got was eBay item number 362220660889
It was £2.70 from Hong Kong, the description is ‘E’ and picture matches so i definitely ordered a LHD cover for my RHD car... but we’ll see if it fits first and looks ok upside down second.

Manual gearbox in one of those is a winner. Rs4 turbos or just remap and they knock in below the 6 sec to 60mph mark and around 170mph top end.

Nope,
Can’t use the LHD one in a RHD car.
Did inform the other seller that this doesn’t fit RHD but I guess they don’t give a monkeys.

The new HID projector with halo lights are in.
The amount of light and the beam clarity/cutoff is immensely better

Wheels were finished a while back and all is well other than a crank position sensor going out 100 yards from the house!

In need of some where in Leics area that does fair priced exhaust work.
Would like to remove the front collector box for an X pipe with a side exit for a solenoid butterfly valve, anyone know of a good place?

I used to have a 2.7 Bi Turbo allroad, loved it and wished I had never sold it.
