Hope all are well

So after almost 2 months of ownership, I was woken up by a sound in my house at 4.30am friday morning. I went to check and to my surprise a man was standing in my hallway downstairs rummaging through keys.

He ran off as I ran down the stairs shouting. Another 2 men were outside in their car which drove off.

Police arrived etc and it was now obvious they took off with both the s5 and wifes golf gtd keys.

Apart from dealing with the ordeal and arranging time and costs to replace both lovk sets on cars etc, luckily my family and I were unharmed and cars were not driven off.

Biggest error on my part aside from working hard and enjoying luxuries is that I did not double lock the pvc porch and entrance door.

Please please make sure double locks are being used especially at this time of year and if you happen to own a nice car because you can afford to do so.

These low lifes continue their quest as seen on cctv footage next day same time when they made off with someones golf r few miles away from me.

I would highly recommend a steering lock or even better auto guard ‘ghost’ which immobilises the car if a code is not entered when ignition is turned on.

Hope this helps

Truly shocking. I’m sure you and your wife are shaken and upset by the ordeal and hope you can move on.

Glad to hear no harm came to any of your family, so many of these scumbags going around today

This is so infuriating! Glad you're all okay, and it's a good thing you didn't get hold of him.

Some more tips for extra security:

Invest in a Ring Doorbell - https://ring.com/ or other CCTV

I place my keys in a Faraday bag at night just so no one can scan for them outside of my house. (Also, keep keys upstairs!)

I Also use either a discklock or Steel cable lock that loops around the steering wheel and clicks into the seatbelt buckle.

Most people don't take these precautions until god forbid, something has happened, be safe!

Glad nobody was injured these things can go sideways sometimes when they don't do a runner.
Get an alarm fitted on the house and use it. Then even if you forget to lock the doors as soon as they are opened the alarm will go off. The same if they come in from the rear of the hose.
CCTV isn't a great deterrent you will just have a nice video of your car being stolen.

Old school locks fit the A5 by the way!

Just been out and put this on tonight, as a van with 3 blokes pulled up outside the house today! when they saw me looking at them they drove off. Could be innocent, but you never know!!! This and the Ghost system should keep it there ;)

I run an alarm company, have done for over 25 years, if anyone wants security advice please ask. The 1st line of defense is decent locks, google lock snapping it will be an education. If you have an alarm set it when you go to bed, almost all systems allow this. If you are interested in driveway posts look up Rampost

One advantage to living in a terraced house .. nobody from outside knows which cars belong to which house ... but this is really terrible, I hope sincerely you can move on ok .just glad nobody hurt .
This happened to my brother . They didn’t snap the lock, they rammed the front door and ransacked the downstairs of the house, took S3 keys and all gadgets. Burnt out 4 miles away an hour later . Should lock up this kind of scum in an offshore prison in middle of the ocean on an old oil rig, drop food from helicopter once per week .

Hi, I've been thinking about installing one of the wireless ones you see in the likes of screwfix etc. are they any good, what brand do you recommend?

Thanks

Id be very dubious with the diy wireless alarms, they are on a different frequency to professional wireless systems and a lot more prone to interference. If you want decent wireless system choose a SSAIB or NSI installer. Pyronix and Texecom make decent kit, I personally would avoid Visonic. The Yale systems people buy in screwfix are very unreliable, I’ve removed about 6 systems in the last year due to problems and none of them were very old.

He had one and they STILL stole the car???

Probably should have elaborated... It was installed after his car was stolen! My bad...

OK thanks for that, Yale was the one I was looking at, so I'm glad you mentioned them ;)

Saw this today and instantly thought of the title of this thread!

So sorry to hear about your experience. We got burgled just a few weeks ago - luckily, no one was in the house and they didn’t find the keys to the S5.

I have installed Ring doorbell since the burglary, and I highly recommend it. However, I keep checking the app when I’m at work!

I’m not too far from you in South Woodford - the borough of Redbridge unfortunately has the highest burglary and car theft in the whole of London.

We have now - got ring doorbell and cameras. Got an ADT alarm fitted. Big lesson learnt - having a nice car unfortunately makes you a target for these scumbags.

Just came home to find the Police on my doorstep!!! Between 10.30 and 12 this morning a house down the road had their back door smashed in and the keys and their Type R taken! There was another car stolen in the area on Thursday night, she said "They are after nice cars (pointing at mine) so if you have any extra locks use them".

My Pro-lock staying on from now on, also going to put a chain around the gates!

Impose stricter laws on theft (chop hands off) and watch the share prices on these barstewards come down!

If you spend around £700 on a house alarmyou shoul get a decent alarm installed to insurance standards.

Contacted someone yesterday about an alarm, went with advice given on here and found a local SSAIB installer ;)

I was reading that due to the increase of these car thefts by intercepting the keyless entry signal that manufacturers are now supplying firmware updates to give the owners the ability to disable the cars receiver for the keyless fobs for unlocking and unless the car has been unlocked via the key buttons the internal receiver will not activate for keyless start as a way of protecting the car from this kind of theft. (I believe Audi just have the option to disable the convenience key unlocking at this time( via MMI))

But at the end of the day they just have to break into your house to steal the keys. All you can do is up the deterrent with things like hard wired dash-cams with cloud storage and gps as well as a hard wired tracker. Or obd port blocker or ignition code.

But my opinion on this is if these scumbags break and enter your house/car any way of protecting your family/property from these people should be considered nice and legal. They made a life choice to steal, make sure they realise they choose wrong.

How did you get on with the SSAIB company

How did you get on with the SSAIB company
This was his reply:

"Re. your e mail. I have a policy never to install wireless intruder alarm systems as they come with the potential of creating numerous false alarms and as each sensor comes with its own battery to power it these have to be replaced.
Having been in the alarm business for over 30 years I strongly advise a wired intruder alarm is a much better and reliable option."

So I then asked for a ballpark figure to cover
1) The front door being opened
2) Side door being opened
3) The kitchen/diner is large, so a pir to cover that area, (french doors going outside in that room).
4) A panic button to set off the alarm from upstairs

He came back with £700 but would need to see the property. I thought that was a bit high considering it's only 2 doors covered and a pir to cover the kitchen/diner and a panic button upstairs!?!?

I don’t fit wireless alarms, only hardwired but I can install systems with absolutely no mess or wiring on show. I fitted a system today with 5no pirs, for £680. If you get a spec of a company and you want a unbiased opinion let me know

It's not so much the equipment that you are paying for it's the time required to plan and fit the system. Wireless systems are a false economy in my eyes as they are more liable to false alarms and have maintenence issues as stated earler. Also if you needed a replacement part in a few years time there is every chance you may struggle to get something compatible. Where as wired systems don't ever really change.
Also wireless systems can interfere with all kinds of things such as car remotes, WiFi etc.
I picked these low lifes up on the CCTV earlier this year after one of the neighbours had the car broken into. Well she never locked it but fortunately there was nothing to pinch. The white A4 in the top right of the picture was the one that was left open.

The police said that somebody had a load of stuff pinched from the house a few nights earlier after they found house keys in a car and used them to help themselves downstairs whilst they were asleep.
I think our Nightwatcher floodlight definitely helped to put them off as it tracks you as you move. This is an old model now that has a wireless CCTV camera in it that I have disabled as it kept interfereing with the WI-FI.
However the person wandering around doesn't know that. The more modern equivalent has an LED light.

Some good points there. I couldn't believe with all those lights coming on how they still carried on walking around!!! That light following them is good, after watching your youtube vid made me smile! The next video up was "HERE ARE 38 EXAMPLES OF WHY AUDI DRIVERS ARE DISLIKED".

Thank you :)

Well mine is locked up for the day/night now. Ghost system, security light now comes on for longer, cctv setting changed, steering lock on and motorbike lock around the gates (keys to both kept apart from the car keys).

10mm welded links :)

Just caught a cat burglar!!! :p

Cat

Hopefully that will put anyone off!

Although the light doesn't come on in the day it still "tracks" you and I am sure has more of a deterrent effect than a normal light does.
@S32B that is a nice lock , I presume you have pedestrian access for the postman :) . On it's own probably not a great deterrent as quite often they just take locked gates off the hinges at one end or just cut through the mild steel top bar one side and bend it up then just lift the one side of the chain loop across. But as a series of measures hopefully they will just go
If you wrap it around the centre bar like a snake then it's not possible to move it easily.

Yes pedestrian access also ;)

Can't lift the gates off, the hinges they sit on face each other, so they can't be moved up or down :) Similar to these, one facing up and one down with the gates sitting between:

When the guys did the drive they had a hell of a job to get them off, think it took them 30 minutes and a lot of moaning lol. The gates also weigh a ton, not the normal cheap steel used, when I took the old ones off I lifted them on my own easily, these need two men to lift them on/off.

I was doing that until a mate said "You are making it nice and tight for them to try and cut through, if you leave it loose it's more difficult". True in some ways!?!?!

As you say if they want it that bad they will try everything, but by that time I'm out of bed and awake, I'm over 6ft, weigh 16 stone and have been trained...so I wouldn't let them get it easily lol. Hopefully they will see all the locks, lights, cctv and think it's too much trouble for them.

@desertstorm been thinking over the way to best make use of the chain/lock, think you were right ;) so:

Lol

Isn't that the wrong way around - surely the point is so you cannot turnt he steering wheel but that way you installed it it won't prevent anyone from steering away from the curb :)

No, if they try to steer right the top of the lock will hit the windscreen and stop the wheel from moving! It's a deterrent anyway, I also have a ghost system installed, so they wouldn't even be able to put it into gear ;)
