Hi guys, I have a 2008 Audi A4 S-line which has non-LED rear lights. As owners will know the standard reversing light bulbs do not give much visibility . Can anyone recommend the best bulbs for the reversing lights? Are LED's worth trying for these? Would using LED light bulbs work fine with no errors?

Thanks,

I had a set like this in my B8, they were great:-

Not sure if you need a coding update to get past bulb errors, the guy who fitted my part LED rear lights sorted that.

I'd have a pair of these on my A6 if there was a way to stop them strobing, gave great rear visibility

When it comes to LED reversing lights brighter is better , accept no less than a Cree 10 chip 50W equivalent , also check for room in the housing to get the correct length bulb .

LED's are a pain (and trust me I've fitted them to almost every location in an Audi) they'll either throw up an error on the dash, need resistors and/or flicker and die. Good luck but like I say I've done almost every bulb but only numberplate and interior lights were hassle free.

So you think it's not worth replacing the halogen bulbs to LEDs then?

Suppose for the couple of quid it'll cost you can chance it but like I say even the best one's I had flickered and died within a couple months, eBay is the most notorious hit/miss place, the site sponsor @t8ups sells some alright bulbs (and allot of people here rave about him) although I can't recommend him too much as I ended up with the wrong fitment bulbs for the front and rear LED indicators were red rather than amber. I now run halogen all 'round other than interior and numberplate also mine's an older model which you'd think should be more/entirely trouble free.

Appreciate the feedback. Can you recommend any normal halogen bulbs for the reverse lights (w16w) version? There doesn't seem be any high performance bulbs to cater for halogen car owners.

I have tried LED reverse bulbs from 2 suppliers on here and they gave out less illumination than the standard filament bulbs. Bright white light to look at, but objective tests with a cardboard box on an unlit lane proved the visibility was worse.

I now dab the rear brake to create loads more light (S Line LED lights)

Just ordered some https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272861460563 to try, thanks

I have a pair of LED reverse lights coming, and I will be posting the results on the change.

I’ve got a set of EMTuning /t8ups led reverse bulbs for sale if anyone wants a set for £13 posted.

LED upgrade is very easy and looks great.

The only complication is that the bulb error needs to be coded out using VCDS (2 minute job)

Here's mine...

Alot of blue coming off them .

Its just the camera. They are white with a hint of Blue.

They look practically identical to the OEM LED reverse bulbs you see on newer Audis/VW/Skodas

It's hard to get a pure white , either they're blue white with blue edges or yellow white with a yellow edge .

How close do you look at cars that you notice what bulbs they have fitted pahaha.

Some people are aestheticlly fussy and would not under any circumstances live in Birmingham .

I understand being aesthetically fussy but calling them “lego” bulbs with such disdain is a little bit odd.

... unless your wife cheated on you with someone who had LED reverse bulbs! That would explain the chip on your shoulder!! :D

All jokes aside, the actual bulbs are barely visible through the lens... not that anyone would be looking anyway.

I do agree with you that certain bulbs with multiple leds might look a bit crap if you were particularly fussy. For example:

My bulbs however look like a lot “neater” and you would be be hard pressed to notice any difference through the lens..

These are the ones I have (they are probably not even the brightest you can get)

I like them and personally I think they look very OEM... happy to take a close up pic of the lense tomorrow morning if you like?

Yes CREE , bought them a couple of years ago as sidelights for a previous car but they were too big so decided to give them another go as reverse lights on my B8 and was very pleased with the result.

I have VCDS and coding out the bulb error was very simple.

One thing i will say is that they dont really spread the light sideways but rather project the “beam” backwards.

Well I have no need for a nice reverse light, facing the car. What's that good for?

I want to have good reverse lights when I look back from inside my car. It needs to light up the surrounding area behind my car, so I see where I'm backing up.

What bulbs are those Gaz? Extremely bright. Any errors at all?

Cheers

It doesn't seem to be an Audi. Shape of side mirrors, side windows layout and roof railings suggest so but have doubts. Is that yours, Gaz?

Merc's have powerful reverse bulbs. Seen A class AMG 17plate reversing and it was flooding the ground with light. Something like the car above.

I'm after something giving more light output also.

It depends on how aestheticlly fussy you are about yellow lego 'fried egg' look .

I'm not fussed, as long as it is bright.
