Interesting Question: Pops and Bangs!

Had my S3 remapped at R-Tech and the performance is now really good, Nikki did a full health check and said the car was making healthy power and all okay. I've got all the Stage 2 bolt on mods (turbo-back exhaust, HPFP, uprated clutch etc..).

He also told me that the car has had it's rev limiter increased and it's now a hard-cut limiter, does this ****** the ignition? I noticed that as I approach the rev limit the limiter does come in pretty hard and there's a sudden loss of power.

A few questions:

1) Is it bad to now take it all the way to the limiter before changing (effectively bouncing off the limiter once or twice)?

2) Is it a fuel cut or does it ****** the ignition (or both)?

3) When I take it into the "Red" area of the rev counter, then release the throttle, I get massive pops and bangs out of the exhaust. Will this damage the valves and/or turbo? I'm assuming its not great for the sports cat! Why does it do this though?

No the cut limiter is like a pop corn it's supposed to make them noises

What if his car had a DSG instead? is it bad?
My car has a DSG and I wanted to ask the mapper that did my car to install the pops and bangs in my car. Would that be a bad idea?

I know it doesn't answer your question directly but from my experience and reading other forums, Nikki appears to be very sensible and has his head screwed on. He wouldn't do anything to a car that would cause serious damage.

If you are concerned I would email R Tech your questions as they are probably the best people to ask as they mapped your car.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't add it if it was dangerous. From what i know they are the best in tfsi game and they refuse to do things when the requirements aren't met.

I'll probably ask them then. Thank you

In my experiance pops and bangs are a sure sign of an air leak on the exhaust side, its unburnt fuel and that will not ignite without air..

Pops and bangs can be mapped in these days. They just keep the injectors open a fraction longer and the unburnt fuel ignites in the rear box / tail pipes. It's only a tiny amount and not the same as flame outs you see on some heavily modded cars.

Would you say it damages the car in any way?

Its a completely unnecessary risk ! there was a guy on our local bypass in aM3 the other week accelerating and shutting it off repeatedly setting off loud bangs. why ? I just thought you want to get that set up properly mate, you just wrecked a half decent car. Its a case of the Kings new cloths, he probably thought this sounds really cool while everyone else is thinking "twit" :)

As nluk100 says,it's something that can be mapped in or out easily enough, and unlike ALS,is unlikely to cause any damage, where proper ALS can if the turbo isn't built with that in mind.

My car will make a proper bang and give you the flames if you shift at full throttle in Sport or Manual modes, but really doesn't make much noise otherwise.

I'm not a fan of having a hard limiter only,as a soft limiter gives you at least a bit of warning that you're approaching peak rpm and need to shift.....

I'm going to R-Tech on Monday for a lot of work to be done but in a nutshell, stage 2+.

I've got a manual S3 which is running a decat BCS DP, I take it I can just ask Nikki to add pops and bangs to the stage 2+ map?

yup, that will make it sound like there is something seriously wrong :)

Ha ha both those sound absolutely crap :) just left thinking either an air leak on the manifold weeping injectors or burnt out valves......

A 5 banger that sounds **** you need your ears checkin

1.Taking the revs to the limiter will wear engine parts more than a standard engine, the harder you drive it the more future problems you'll have.
2.The limiter cuts the fuel off.
3. More fuel is being delivered at high revs and a quick limiter cut off will leave a little residual fuel in the exhaust system causing pops & bangs. Again more parts such as the cat and exhaust can be damaged with constant abuse.
You have to accept when remapping a engine for more power and using full revs, it will end up with higher maintenance bills for you.

Very much agree with sooty :) I am, very aware i have chopped 1000's miles off my engine even with just stg1 and i drive it very carefully, it's great to have warp factor power on occasions but i use it sparingly. I tend to think that every ounce or torque trying to turn the wheels is also pushing the crank back against its thrust bearing , that usually stops me putting my foot down when i don't need to :) ..................and change the oil !! you cant change it to often.
i was following a guy on his bike a little while ago, his party trick was to momentarily kill the ignition on the overrun at night causing a pop bang and lick of flame..... and as it happens it blew the baffles clean out of the silencer. be warned.

In the days of carb engined cars, flames and bangs were common place with us young guns, a few exhausts did go south then.

We had a Mk3 Cortina back in Dunedin, New Zealand - drive along, switch the key off, pump the gas pedal then switch the car back on and BOOM.

We then had the Armed Offenders Squad turn up as they thought we were firing a shotgun...
