I’ve got an S3 on the way. Very excited. However there is one thing worrying me - birds.

I park partially under a tree. Birds like to sit in the tree and **** on my car. I’m planning on putting some of those anti-perch spikes on the branch where they perch so I’m hoping that will sort the problem.

I also considered a cover, but I’ve heard that covers can do more harm than good.

If I keep the car waxed, will I be safe enough from the birds?

I know it’s not ideal, but it’s how it is unfortunately :(

I’ve had this problem, as the little bas****ds seemed to aim for mine. But that wasn’t directly under a tree. I think you’re asking for trouble there, they’ll always find a way.

The paint is surprisingly resilient if you get to it quickly, and after a good wash/wax I genuinely can’t see where the clear coat has been ‘burnt’ previously. The problem will be in the summer when it bakes on.

Easier said than done, but I’d try to park elsewhere and avoid the worry. Alternatively what about some form of structure under the branch that takes the brunt of it, along with the perch spikes.

I feel for you...car covers I would avoid, they are fine for storage purposes on a clean car, but not for day to day use. Waxing will help, but some birds have really acidic pooh and can damage paint, especially if left to bake on under a hot sun. Solutions,....move to another spot.....wash off any pooh immediately...cut the limb off the tree.
How has your present car fared under these conditions...any paint damage?

I think I'll investigate the perch spikes and see how I go.

Yeah, the thing is, the parking space is really great in other ways. I never get frost on the car, and it's very sheltered.

Yeah, I think I'll avoid the cover for now.

My present car has not fared brilliantly, but the paint work was never great to start with, and to be honest I haven't looked after this car that well as it was only meant as a stop gap before getting the S3.

Thanks for the replies. You've confirmed how I was feeling about it. Cheers!

Is it your tree? I'm not sure you can just stick these spikes on wherever you feel like.

Birds roost in trees and poo overnight. I suggest you keep your car well waxed. Personally I would just park somewhere else.

When you park in a crowded parking lot you’ll probably make an effort to park as far away from others as you can.
If you have alternatives I’d use them. Screw that, let the birds win and have their space.

Is cutting down the tree an option?

I’m sure I read somewhere that gtechniq, and I’m guessing other ceramic coatings, provide good resistance, and that if it does mark, it can just be lightly polished out

Edit: https://gtechniq.com/customer-service/faq/

Q: Do your coatings prevent any damage to my paintwork caused by bird droppings?
A: This is a very important question and one that requires quite an involved answer. A lot of people mistakenly think that it is the chemicals in the bird droppings that are the primary reason bird droppings harm your paintwork. In fact the major cause of damage is related to mechanical issues of the areas beneath the insulating effect of the bird dropping not swelling and shrinking like the rest of your paintwork as it is exposed to sunlight.

What we have found through extensive real world testing, is that without the coating your clear coat can be compromised requiring repaint but whilst coatings such as C1, Crystal Serum Light, Platinum Crystal Coat and Crystal Serum do not completely prevent any marking from a bird dropping left on a car for a long period of time, the damage could be repaired through polishing thereby avoiding having to repaint.

Repair of this damage is covered under our guarantee (NB this guarantee is only valid if our coatings are applied by one of our Accredited Detailers). But our advice is always to remove bird droppings from your vehicle's paintwork as soon as you notice them.

In the boot of the car, I carry a bottle of Poorboys bird s**t remover which is great if a bit greasy/oily and a small number of microfiber cloths (Costco 36 packs are great for this) and the autoglym bird dropping wipes

my rule of thumb is to soak any bird droppings with a microfibre cloth soaked and heated in microwave. Just leave it to soak and then lift it rather than wipe.

Very late to this thread l wouldn't park my under any tree, tree sap will harm a cars clear coat as much bird ****

Difficult for me as I have about 35 trees in my gardens with a fairly big 75ft high x 60ft wide pine tree over the driveway. And no, I don't live in a mansion, lol.
