Facelift Known fault with FL RS3 - ticking exhaust valve..

Looks like a new exhaust is on the cards

Fab, put one on the same that’s on all the other cars :p I’d imagine Audi will try and find another fix before they replace every backbox but I’ve been wrong before haha.

Being as the flaps are the issue and you can’t order them seperate then there’s not much else can be done.

Well seeing as all are the same, they need to fix the backbox first. Or perhaps we could all argue and get a PFL backbox :) But I would want my black tips off of the old one....

Why on God’s green earth would you want a PFL back box on a new car

To get the noise back.....
Noise, or lack of (relative to PFL), is more down to the aluminium engine rather than back box, surely?

WTF are you real ?

Yeah the FL is the quietest car.........

How can you have something back you’ve not experienced in the first place

Um, real along with the other majority of FL owners too! If there was a way of getting the noise back, we nearly all would.

I’ve driven the PFL, numerous and extended periods of time and on 2nd December I will be next to one with the secondary cats out... mine will be totally drown out.

Probably the engine yes but as our 5-pot guru was kind enough to let me know last week, the FL box has a slight change. You know the small pipe between the two exhaust outlets? That is missing on the FL and he is convinced that will make a pretty big difference.

Ask if you can swap cars then.

Sounds like the PFL is the car you really want.

FL sounds fine to me and I’ve owned a PFL for 18 months and an 8P prior to that.

Had the roof open yesterday and it still sounds bonkers and every one turns around still to see what’s coming.

I didn't know that. I thought the little pipe between the two outlets was the cause for a lot of the noise! Does a PFL backbox fit a FL?

I’m happy with mine thanks :)

I agree it sounds fantastic, but side by side.. listen to the comparison videos, it sounds rubbish. On its own the car sounds incredible, but that day you pull up alongside a PFL.. prepare to be disappointed.

Haven’t driven a FL with the sports exhaust yet, but loved the standard exhaust.. all except for you have to have your foot buried to get any noise. In the PFL, build the revs up to 3500rpm and let off and it would drown out the surroundings. The FL only makes noise at full chat, on the overrun it’s just nasty plain engine noise.

It was only found out last week that I know of.
I’ve been told that the small pipe sends pressurised air through the opposite outlet amplifying noise.

Yes should be a direct bolt on, otherwise the box is identical.

I think Audi need to learn "if it ain't broke DON'T fix it"...

Without a doubt, but the PFL is pure anti social.. nothing more to be said about it, the one that slipped through the nest.

My valves will be going on a remote and I am sure I will have absolutely no complaints.

Wow the rattle is horrific there, worst I’ve heard!
What I’ve heard up until now has been more of a tappety noise rather than a bag of bolts.
You like it remember ;)

I (probably like most) have not heard a FL from the outside, I think from the outside the FL is quite loud just doesn't pop on overrun like the PFL - that's probably about it. With the roof open it does sound much louder, close it and its pretty quiet inside the cabin. I have had a few stares - even the postman commented when I was outside at the weekend - he told it me it sounded nice (he is an Audi man) and he could hear me pulling out the road.

Even had an old bloke give me some verbal for what he thought was driving to fast - I wasn't, didnt get over 25mph and stopped well before a crossing (as I know the road and its on a corner). It has to be the noise making him thing I was gunning it.

Get to 4k RPM and the engine/exhaust note is lovely.

No doubt it sounds great low down. When I had my short two manoeuvres totalling 0.3 miles driving it, one of those two events was driving across the front of the showroom. Between the glass front of the showroom and the approved cars, in M1... I didn't go over 2500rpm, I were laughing my head off! So excited!

Potentially collecting mine tomorrow, will find out at 8am if not will be Wednesday as we are waiting for PPF to cure.
Unfortunately will probably be driving 140 miles back in the sodding p****** down rain :( I told myself I wouldn't do it, but my local detailer is losing his head that he might not see the car until Wednesday evening, so on tight schedules... I have no choice.

Under 4000rpm for the best part of 500 miles I think, also driving back country road to my dads displease.
So I've heard it isn't good to run an engine in sat on the motorway, plus its waaaay more fun.

Update....

Stood with the Audi Tech while it was cold started in their workshop......

Thing to note is, to be fair to Audi, its no where near as audible in a wide open space, but he did hear it and has watched the video clips i sent.

He said he will have to go do some investigating work of his own, they cannot listen to outside influences.

How Can I be disappointed after owning a 2015 RS3 for 18 months ?

If the biggest thing about a car is it doesn’t pop and bang every five minutes, you should’ve bought a used 2015/16 car.

So nearly 3 weeks after my original post and a lot of waffle we're now agreed there is a recorgnised fault and Audi are looking into it :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

I'm going to try and call my dealer today to see if there is any update...

Agreed 1664Hatter

Thread cluttered about lack of noise and PFL vs FL debate.

When there clearly is an issue that’s nothing to do with the PFL.

I will be honest .......

I would HAPPILY sacrifice some of the exhaust sound of my current car if Audi could guarantee me having a fault free car next time.

Too many complaints lately from new owners taking cars back with faults and then being treated poorly in the process.

It is quite concerning.

I will be in the market for ordering 2 cars next year - for me & the wife - so I hope things improve before then.

I’ve just had a ‘free’ health check video through
At least I know my new car has good pad / tyre depth

No mention of any resolution work on the noise though

So Audi tell me it's a Characteristic of the new engine/exhaust system

Advanced Catalyst warm up phase........and it's normal they say.

The tech went out to every RS3 they have in their compound and to quote..."they all do it"

Does that mean no new exhaust then ?

Mine does it too - although not too bad at the moment.
I even heard it driving out of the showroom.

Happy with my FL no issues after 1500miles. No brake squeak, no tappety start up that worries me.
As for the noise well it's more than loud enough and now the engine is loosening it bangs on up and downshifts in Sport especially when the engines hot.
And my word does it shift ! Would love to put it on a dyno. And the handling awesome.
Not sure why there appears to be too many complaints on here lately.
Touch wood ! No issues here.

That’s good to hear you FL boys are getting your bangs back :sunglasses:plus with the up dated software and handling must be a right hooligan

Cold start up - switch through to Dynamic mode and it stops .. exhaust valves for sure.

Note: if in dynamic you need to cycle through as you should know after a restart it lies to you.

Mine does it no matter which mode it’s in.

As does mine, the only time it stops when I cycle the modes is if I use the * key on the steering wheel, and that is because the cold start process has stopped by the time that thing works! haha

That won’t work, until the car comes off cold start the valves stay shut! The only way the valves will open on cold start is if they are forced open.
