Hi Guys,

Wondering if anyone can help me out. I took my 2012 8P S3 to get a stage 1 remap the other day and the base run dyno showed it was only producing 235 bhP rather than 265bhp. Took it into Audi and they say there is nothing wrong with the car and that it is down to engine wear. To me 30bhp loss in 5 years isn't normal. Has anyone every had a similar problem?

Cheers

Jamie

I'd take it to a specialist but might be worth checking / replacing the following anyway (all are DIY and relatively inexpensive);

1. Air filter
2. Spark plugs
3. PCV (updated part number)
4. DV (Revision G)

Who was the tuner / make of dyno?

HTH

The latest revision of dv valve and pcv are a must before anything imo

Thanks guys will see about getting them done. The tuner was star performance in Kirkcaldy who were very good. They said the DV was on the way out so will get that replaced. Audi missed that completely. Hopefully with all of the above changes I might get back close to 265bhp and then the stage 1 software will work!

I wonder how accurate their dyno is ? Interesting that Audi say its engine wear..whats the milage ?

The dyno had been calibrated 2 weeks before my car was in and they hadn't had any unexpected readings. Car has 36K miles and is in really good condition.

Could a new air filter, spark plugs and DV make up 30 horse power?

Yeah Audi basically washed their hands of it and took the easy way out saying its wear.

Get yourself a DV+ and try again I couldn't believe the difference when i fitted mine, made me realise it had been running way under power for years.

As for Audi ? what an admission their cars are showing significant engine wear after 36k miles. as usual read the ditti under my picture :)

I'm surprised nobody mentioned carbon buildup on the intake manifold/valves yet. One of the biggest and most common causes of power loss on these engines.

I assume that car has been well maintained, etc.

Carbon buildup can be extremely bad even on low mileage cars if it's used for frequent short/slow journeys.

To be fair, DV+ will not give you extra power, just help with holding boost if the old one is split. So can recover some performance. A fully working rev G valve works just as well. I went back to revision G OEM valve as my DV+ was leaking air, so they are definitely not fulproof.

You can guarantee that a revision G DV will not leak when new. Only trouble that the rubber diaphragm can split over time. Not a big job on the S3. NGK BKR7eIX plugs are what most people with napped engines use. As already said, you may need the latest revision PCV valve.
Whilst the engine cover is off for a new air filter it is worth having the fuel pump cam follower replaced. Might be worth having the fuel filter replaced.

I don’t buy it about the wear, I have a Mk 4 Golf 1.8T on 120,000 miles as my daily driver and it has never run better than at the moment. Remapped by R-Tech at 72,000 miles and it runs very well for a car that is nearly 20 years old!

The rubber diaphragm was used on the original DV design and was prone to splitting. Rev G and D versions are a piston type design, not too different to DV+, and do not use a diaphragm at all. They are therefore much more reliable and suitable for for high boost applications.

I had the later version on my 2011 and it still failed. The DV+ made a huge difference. surprisingly the DV+ is a hell of a lot quieter than the old failed one, i have lost 75% or that fart on gear change but the old one failed over time so it was never obvious what was wrong , just lost that edge, as it got worse i knew i had a problem but everything seemed ok. I changed the DV more in hope than anything else as the old basket type std one looked OK but i think i got about 50bhp boost when i did. Car literally came back to life. best £90 i ever spent on a car.

You need the revision G for higher than OEM boost as the revised DV (version D) can leak boost.

Hey guys sorry for the late reply. Had the car in the garage last week (not Audi) changed fuel filter, spark plugs, DV and PCV valves with standard parts and the car did 270bhp on the dyno!

Got a stage 1 remap and put out 312bhp on the dyno! Only 315 lb/ft toque though as the clutch is slipping a little. That's definitely the next job!
