Thinking of selling my a3 tdi. Everything keeps breaking, its at 100k miles now, its dsg so that will break at some point, it leaks coolant sometimes, and I was thinking of spending £500 upgrading the headlights from the useless "well done" ones to proper bi-xenon ones.

Then I thought...why am I spending 1/4 of the cars value on a car that keeps breaking? Just last week the drivers door stopped working... £150 later...

So I have been looking round and really fancy another 2.0 TFSI, preferably an 8P3 but would take a low mileage 8P2.

Questions:

1. Do these need fuel pumps replacing to remap properly? Do you just buy internals or the full £800 unit from APR etc?

2. A remap and above fuel pump, will this be fine on s-tronic?

3. Do these suffer from the issues that the 1.8tFSI does with regard to piston rings failing?

Thanks!

Providing youre talking about the EA888 2.0t then Stock internals on stage 1 should see gains of ~260hp/400Nm. Haven't heard of the need for the fuel pump replacement. I believe some of these engines also suffered with the excessive oil consumption problem like the 1.8t. Maybe someone else can shed more info?

You won’t need to upgrade the fuel pump unless you’re looking to go Stg2+ or beyond. The APR HPFP is expensive, Loba is a slightly cheaper alternative (just as good quality) or Autotech internals fitted into your existing HPFP (again very good quality).

Unfortunately the 2.0 EA888 had similar issues to the 1.8; I think the 1.8 was a widespread issue however. Hopefully someone could confirm this for us.

Re your STronic question - I wish I’d got my S3 with STronic

Would you consider an S3?

S3 gearbox (DQ250?) is rated much higher than the standard tfsi uni though isn't it?

Engine I believe is EA113, this one

I had one with this before, it had an FMIC and remap but the guy didn't do the HFFP.

I can't afford an S3. I will have a budget of around £8500 maximum. I don't fit in a manual one, the struts get in the way of my clutch leg, plus I do lots of queuing. Not buying a high mileage car again either. Always bought low mileage ones but seen people fin with high mileage ones. Bought this one at 70k for £6k and spent around £4k fixing things over the 2-3 years I have owned it.

Hi there, I really don’t know whether the gearboxes differ between between the models sorry.

Yes the engine above is the EA113 - older technology than the EA888 but very strong as I understand it. The after market HPFP would typically only be required post Stg2.

You can get an 8p s3 with that kind of money....

Cars with AFS have silver casing of the bi-xenon lense and cars without AFS have black casing.
That one from the link doesn't have AFS.

Can you give me a pictorial example of AFS and non AFS please because looking at ones that claim to be adaptive (they also say auto full beam, I thought this got introduced in the 8V?) they look identical to the white one I linked too.

After all my issues with xenons I only want to buy a car with AFS Bi-xenons.

We have a 2.0tsi 2010 Cab 8P - it’s done 67k miles and has had to have a bit of work done on the engine.

Used to idle really lumpy - cylinder head to come off and the engine had to be de-coked as the carbon builds up massively on them.

Something to do with manifold also had to be recently cleaned because that also coked up as well.

It’s running a little lumpy again.

These engines are also known for burning oil, albeit ours only does 3k miles a year.

I have a Jan 2010 A3 E888 CCZA with DSG. No trouble with oil consumption. About 1/4litre oil added over 1 year and 8000 miles.
Only one thing bothers me, is a few of theses engine codes have suffered with the cam chain jumping a few teeth and causing major engine failure, was due to a failed chain tensioner.
Once you put in filters for this model with low mileage on autotrader/eBay/pistonheads you'll end up with just a couple for sale in the country, so not much choice as DERV models were selling in abundance back in the 8P3 days.

Stage one remap needs no extra parts ,DSG and engine will cope ok.

AFS is when you turn the wheel and the lights turn to suit, along with going up and down depending on being on a hill.

There's a black car for sale in London, 2.0t Quattro BE with just 38k, I really like the look of it. I have no idea if it has AFS and im tempted to buy it whether it does or not because it has all the other spec I would like, including dimming rear view mirror and heated seats.

Just a bit far from me as I live near Cheshire.

Is AFS really that essential? That particular car for sale is a great example but for the money you could get an early facelift S3 which has a more reliable engine.

Mine has AFS, sure it is part of the HID light package. You won't get an equivalent S3 for that money. Have a look at an S3 nearer you and you'll have an idea what you get for your money, don't just look at one car. In my opinion the white A3 would be the one I would definitely have a look at.
