Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

Had bad experience with Auto silicone Hoses myself, had to send back alloy elbows and silicone bends as the weren't fit for purpose, they claimed to never have received the goods I sent, and I lost my money, but what annoyed me even more was there communication, they don't give a monkeys, half ars£d messages, no attempt to improve the situation, never going near again.

Nick, have you asked for an engine crane off Santa this year?

Did you sell the old downpipe eith the TFSI unit?

Its quite sad that I check the forum daily to see if this is running and yet I can’t be assed even fixing my own car, lol

Don't worry that's the norm, my son enjoys watching people on YouTube playing computer games he has - more than playing them himself.

Sad isn't it? I've been buying from ASH for years, and for 4-5 years they were awesome.

The last few orders have ALL been wrong. And the worst bit is they don't give a **** either! When I phoned about the wrong bits yesterday I was told 'you best send it back then'

No apology at all. When I asked if they could supply the parts I ordered I was told 'nah, probably not'

Absolute disgrace. I won't be using them again at all.

It's people with your experience that normal mortal folk will listen to, putting posts about ASH poor customer service and part confusion, time wasting etc will make or break a flagging business.

I've actually got an engine crane Ant! It's just that they're big and cumbersome and take up too much garage space. I actually find it really easy taking the engines in and out on the trolley, when it doesn't break

Old downpipe and all lines etc went back to BBT as part of a deal/ agreement I had with them I'm afraid.

They don't seem to care at all. It's very annoying!

I've also heard several people say they've returned things and ASH have claimed they never received them. I wouldn't mind betting its done on purpose. They send you a free post label so you can return the items for free, but it's conveniently not tracked! I'll be paying for return postage with a signature definitely.

Mortal folk  I think you just made my Friday Stuart

Sadly I think ASH have grown so large that they won't be hurt by my thoughts. It'll take a large scale boycott to have an impact on them!

16th of October I ordered the bits I need. Yesterday they told me they didn't know where they were and they'd jusy send them again.

Plans looks good nick! Out of interest what are those coolant pipes from that stick up next to the turbo like that? Agu? Completely different to all the ones I've had from aum's!

On the ASH subject. I haven't used them for the last 2 years! Absolutely useless, mega long delivery times, wrong items, chasing them up 2 weeks after ordering to find they don't have items in stock.

Customer service is diabolical and as others have said they just don't care!

I only really use creation Motorsport for my basic silicone pipes now. People don't like them for copying designed etc but for basic pipework, 90's, reducers etc etc they are great. Quality is REALLY good and delivery times are normally amazing. Always arrive in 1-3 days.

Hard lines are from an apy K04 engine Ste. I swapped to a k04 hard pipe years ago when I ran the 023 hybrid.

I think when this is done it should be a really neat finish and all fit in very nicely around the turbo Inlet.

Some people use agu or aum hard lines with the 90 degree fittings off the bulkhead and run under the turbo Inlet, but on mine that would be very close to my Wastegate.

In other news, ordered the 25-19 reducer from another seller weds evening at 7pm. Just arrived this morning.

Still waiting on delivery from ASH after 11 days....

I wouldn’t publicly admit to using creation motorsports.....

Yeah I feel the pain on the engine crane, Ideally I need a trolley/scissor lift.

Howcome you chose a MAC valve? Emerald sell N75’s so presumably they function as intended and its well supported.

Is there a provisional booking at Badger5 or are you street tuning this first?

Sod an engine crane, get an I-beam installed and an electric winch that runs along the beam on a dolly.

Mac valve vs N75 valve wasn't too hard a decision to make actually. In terms of function, they're exactly the same. Each have 3 ports, and can be controlled to give a duty cycle of 0-100%. You could fit a Mac valve to a mapped car, and aside from perhaps slightly different boost levels due to the specifics of each valve, it would behave in exactly the same manner.

Having had TFSI for the last few years I don't actually have a known working N75 valve, and it's not an easy thing to mount neatly as it usually sits in a pipe in the TIP which I won't have.

Depending on the wastegate used, some inherently leak off boost pressure slowly. Bill has found that on some cars even with a 44mm gate the bleed hole in the stock N75 isnt large enough for the volume of air required to hold the gate open, and they creep as a result. Switching to a mac valve totally eliminates that problem, and it's also much easier to mount neatly somewhere on a flat surface.

A genuine brand new Mac valve was also a few quid cheaper than a genuine N75, so it all just made sense really.

No B5 booking just yet. As per usual I'll be running it in myself, and doing as much road mappping as possible before making a booking with Bill to have him polish off my efforts and make sure it's where we want it to be.

I also want to know if my current injectors are up to the job before wasting any dyno time. 630s at 4 bar SHOULD be sufficient for what I'm wanting to do, but I'd hate to get to Bills and find all my road mapping was for nothing and have to be swapping them. I'll soon know myself once I start upping the boost whether they are going to be enough or not.

Sod an engine crane, get an I-beam installed and an electric winch that runs along the beam on a dolly.

I've actually got an I-beam for just that purpose, and an electric winch, although the two have not yet met, and I'm too lazy to remove the bonnet too

Not their knock off stuff. Just their standard 90's, straights couplers etc.

Quality, customer service and delivery are all better then ASH. I'm not supporting their copying tactics haha

Now, this is how you deliver a silicone hose:

WbNjOMt.jpg

Asked a question at 7pm Wednesday. Got a response within 20 minutes so ordered Wednesday night. Arrived Friday morning. Well made, well wrapped, in a solid box, with a thank you note!

Impressed with that after the crap I've had from ASH.

ASH, had the turmerity to ask for a five star rating for quality and performance, appertaining onto the hoses that yet have to be delivered, some two weeks after ordering them. To add insult they said they had sent out the order again. As you will all guess, that is a complete load of b-----ks:sign ban:

Not a great deal to report here I'm afraid!

It's amazing how an utterly shyte supplier can really destroy your motivation for a project isn't it?

I placed my order with Ash on the 16th of October.

I ordered:

2x 16mm silicon 90s
2x 19mm silicon 90s
2x 19mm ali joiners WITH swaged ends
1m of 8mm reinforced flexi hose
1x 102mm 45 degree silicon bend.

It took them 4 days to message me at 1650 on a Friday and say that the 2x 16mm were out of stock. No huge problem. I asked for a refund on those items and that they send the rest. Not great, but oh well, at least I'd have it the next week.

Weds 25th came and no parcel, I called them and was told they had no idea where it was and that the tracking number had been lost, they would 'send it again' Hmmmmmmmmmm, sounds like ******** to me.

Friday 27th came, still no parcel, I was promised it would be sent out that day and arrive Monday morning. No apologies, just poor excuses.

Monday came, nothing. I called to complain at 1500, and was told it would have to be sent out the next day because 1500 was too late to dispatch!?

Late on Tuesday night I recieved a confusing partial refund, the amount of which matched the 2x 19mm bends this time. No message, no notification of anything, just a partial refund again.

I called wednesday morning and was told the 19's hadn't been sent because they were out of stock! ARGH!!!!!

A package did eventually arrive on Wednesday, containing my 102mm bend, the 1m of 8mm flexi hose, and 2x 19mm joiners WITHOUT swaged ends!

Seriously? I wait 16 days, have to chase them 4 times, 50% of my order gets cancelled, then 50% of what turns up is WRONG.

That's a 25% success rate, after waiting over 2 weeks.

Complete joke!

Anyway, enough moaning. Here are some pictures of the very few things I HAVE been doing recently in the few spare minutes I get to nip out to the garage.

First up, my trusty engine trolley has been given a facelift:

lVTrC28.jpg

Looks technical, doesn't it?

Regular readers will remember it's untimely death here:

bO1XGBw.jpg

Seeing as I'm cheap, rather than getting a whole new board in 18mm OSB, I simply screwed a few offcuts onto the broken board to beef it up again

U8WqSw1.jpg

Good as new, I'm sure you'll agree!

I've also had another play around with turbo position after finding out a few things on my first test fit of the engine.

I HAD setup the turbo much like Bill does on his builds with the Nortech manifold and downpipe, with the turbo at a slight angle to the engine:

Not much, but you can see it here in the angle between cam cover and the exhaust v band face:

hz5nDhO.jpg

I've now tweaked it to sit basicaly square, like so:

RFvJRFH.jpg

The reason being, where Mark has made the top of my downpipe in 4", it sits very close to the runner on cylinder 1. With the turbo at a slight angle, this sat even closer, so I had to rotate the bottom of the downpipe backwards to gain some room. this then left the bottom part VERY close to the bulkhead, which clearly wasn't ideal at all.

Having now spun the turbo slightly on the manifold, the downpipe can run vertically downwards, clearing the manifold runner, and also gaining around 15mm of room at the bottom. Win win!

6xPQAZB.jpg

The heater pipes still fit very neatly around the inlet after some mild fettling too. I've now used the plunge cutter and removed the second small section of hard pipe on the heater line so make way for my new silicon replacement seen sticking up here on the right, yet to be trimmed down.

kz00lEh.jpg

Happy that everything now sat nicely, I reclocked the turbo core to ensure the oil drain and water feed sat nicely around the collector, and folded back down the lock tabs on the hotside.

Just for a laugh, I offered the 102mm elbow onto the turbo (now that it's FINALLY arrived), and also stuck my Blox Racing 4" velocity stack filter on the end :racer:

SBaCQZc.jpg

And finally, most of my exhaust stuff has now arrived too!

EqjRVyr.jpg

The bends, straight pipe, and stock cat all came from Rich, a good friend of Bills who builds Tony Hutchings TT race car. I've got a stock cat so that I can make up a replaceable centre section with a cat in it for 'road use' ;)

I've also bought all new stainless 3" v bands for the system too, and as I want it to be fully removable in situ, I've bought an additional 2" v band also so the wastegate pipe can be removed from the downpipe close to the DP, meaning I SHOULD be able to slide it up into place without removing anything else.

I'm trying to make it so that everything is as serviceable as possible on the car, to cover all eventualities in the future.

Slowly but surely, it's getting there!

Looking good nick. Are you sure that the intake and air filter is big enough :) .
I made up a removeable cat for the car with one of the original TT cats and some 3 inch flanges. Flew through the MOT with no problems.
DSC 2833

I thought pigeon droppings too. My welding isn't that great as I don't do that much. I hope it doesn't let you down when it all starts getting very hot.

Downpipe is definitely ugly! Can't disagree with that, but I didn't make it, so that makes it ok

It was on Marks 2.0 stroker along with this turbo, and happily made 541bhp for over 3 years, so whilst it may look fugly, I'm 100% confident that it's solid, and it'll all be wrapped anyway so you won't actually see any of the welds :)

I'm retaining this top section due to the rather tricky to make 4" elbox, plus it already has 2x o2 bosses and an EGT boss which I will be using. I'm then making the rest of it from the bottom of this peace, back to my rear beam where I'll join back onto my original 3" system :)

I'll have a drop in Cat section for 'road use', then also probably a 24x5" silencer to drop in to really drop the noise levels for quiet days or excessively long trips should we ever be mad enough to drive it long distance ever again!

Nick, where did you get your Blox filter and velocity stack from? H-Tune?

Bloxx filter was from tegiwa @craigt1985. I was about to buy one on eBay. Com and pay the import tax lol, then found tegiwa had them in stock for less money :)

No particular progress on the engine lately. It's been out again, and is now back in again. 3rd time lucky we hope?

In totally non engine related news, I'm hoping to have another fairly exciting update before the end of the week!

OK, I'll spill the beans.

For a very long time, I have a have wanted a set of BIG brakes.

My 4 pot cp5200 setup has been absolutely epic, and as people like Bill have shown they're more than capable for race use, whilst not being too heavy.

However, this has been a bit of a dream of mine for some years, and in recent weeks several things all aligned and a few things came up that made it possible!

So, my cp5200 has now gone to a very worth be home, and in its place, I have acquired a set of these:

f8w9tL9.jpg

And for the time being, I've stuck them on the shelf with some 'other bits' I recently acquired!

Now get it moving first :p

So jealous!
They looks so awesome it’s unreal. 2018 is gonna be a good one!

Sometimes, things come up for grabs, and you just can't say no.

Alex had mentioned he needed new brakes on his hill climb a3, I'd suggested that mine may well be up for grabs in the next few months.

Alex wanted something sooner, but I wasn't really in a position to get rid of mine yet having nothing to replace really them.

Then, as luck would have it, a job lot of ex btcc discs and pads became available through a guy I'd done a few Mission Motorsport charity days with.

The discs are ap racing BTCC specific 368x36mm 72 vane floating rotors, from Rob Austins 2017 btcc Toyota Avensis.

UKIvnSx.jpg

MfJFsv2.jpg

Pads are BTCC spec raybestos st45 compound, used again on Rob Austins Avensis this year.

eHgUZro.jpg

Both discs and pads have all done 1 practise session and 1 race max. The discs are almost completely unworn, and the pads, which start at 18mm new, are all over 17mm thick still!

All that was left was a caliper to run these discs and pads, so I took the plunge and went for the calipers I've wanted since the day they were released, the AP Racing CP9660.

It's a 6 pot race caliper, with stainless pistons and 4lb knock back springs, and to be quite honest, it's an absolute thing of beauty

f8w9tL9.jpg

mPaWEVw.jpg

The detail on these is simply incredible! The way the pistons are machined to reduce surface contact with the pads, and the way the calipers are hollowed out around the pistons to save weight, they're just amazing!

QvlJSU9.jpg

They look pretty amazing coupled with the discs too!

Well you aren't ever going to run out of brake pads are you. You bought out the old stock of a race team or something. Or are you being sponsored by AP Racing?
Hope the pad compound works out OK for you. Be a bit of a pain if they don't work as want.

Well that explains something :) I was typing the message above whilst you posted yours. So I was right race team old stock. Can't believe they only use the parts so little. Your car is going to be standing on it's nose with those brakes ans the grip from those tyres.

Lovely caliper colour that :grinning:
