Today I decided to have the haldex pump filter cleaned and fresh oil put in it, It was done just before Aitp9 in mid August, I’ve covered just under 2k miles in the 2 months since then, just wanted to see the condition of the oil & filter, I’m glad I did!!
The filter was caked in sludge and the oil was pretty dirty, flushed it out and it was really dirty, just make sure if your tuned that you do this regularly.
I had a pump failure last year which led to other big price items needing replaced so be over cautious and get it done more often.

Mine had a Haldex under warranty last November and I've had a bit of wheels pin on launch control the last couple of days....they were launches in the pouring rain to be fair and it was only a little bit of spin and then it shot off like a scolded cat....but I did wonder wether it's in its way out again?
Mine is completely standard with only the same audi dealer looking after it.
That gunk looks awful!

Would be interesting to see what a stock cars filter is like after a 2k miles , be good to see a comparison

Is that gunk from the wet haldex clutch wearing over time?

How often should this be done?
I've done 35k in 2 years...

Well some idiot from Audi said they don't have a filter ! And I've had a haldex service done, where is the filter exactly ?

I asked the service adviser the other day and she said haldex oil and filter change at 35000 - 40000 miles.

I was thinking 25000 or 30000 miles for mine but don't like the look of that sludge so may reconsider.

Are they easy to service yourself when the warranty is out? What oil and filter is required?

What's the cost for the dealer to do it?

I get my pal to do it, he’s an ex Audi master tech, runs his own place now,I’ll find out the oil and costs tomorrow

The filter is the white square with gauze in the pic, all covered in gunk, it’s attached/situated at the end of the pump

My haldex pump failed last November with 15k miles, filter was blocked up and starved the pump of oil, a clean & fresh oil was done in mid August then again today, so in 2 months and approx 2k miles it’s starting to block up again, in August’s service the crap was totally caked onto the filter, im running it hard and on almost twice the factory power output so it would be good to see feedback on stock cars to make comparisons on

I take it you can't just change the filter without loosing the oil ? It's been a month since it was in at Audi getting the haldex done it's only covered 13k but running stage 2.

If they put the engine round the right way Haldex wouldn’t be needed. Over engineering I think, old school Quattro A4 = 80 kilos heavier than fwd car, S3 = 230 kilos heavier than fwd A3

No mate, oils coming out as soon as you separate the pump from the car, it’s a **** design, it needs an easily removable filter to slide out and clean

What’s weird is that Elsawin didn’t mention anything about any filter even in the instructions for replacing the pump. And with the numbers of Haldex failures, you would think Audi would put out a TSB at least for filter cleaning.

Afterall, lots of failures are warranty claims, it would only make sense to include something as simple as filter cleaning to cut down their warranty costs??

I might be getting Sat Nav installed at some point and I will get my mate at Audi to clean the filter etc. He did say the oil was very clean so not a lot of need to have it done but did it anyway.

My oil was quite clean then when it was emptied and when flushed there was a load of gunk that came out and the filter as you can see had a build up on it

Or... they hope the design lasts past the three year warranty period then if it fails after that period... nice little earner...

Gonna get mine done soon as I know there are BIG problems to ignoring the oil change on haldex pumps.

Been quoted ~£70 to change the oil from Audi, and should be changed at 30,000miles or 3 years. Mine's just hit the 30K mark after 2 years.

I've just booked mine in as i'm getting a lot of wheel spin and it seems to be taking a while to get the power to the rear wheels.

I've done 27k and around 400 launches so i'm sure the oil is dirty in there.

Has having this done resolved any problems for anyone?

Do they not have the filter on the side anymore is it just the one on the pump.

Haldex gen. 4 was the last version to have a filter on the side, haldex gen. 5 only has the one on the pump.

Ok cheers as I have just had mine serviced and nothing was said to me but don’t know what one I have on mine it’s a 2014 S3

The MQB chassis cars are all gen 5 mate.

Did you get the service done by Audi? They just change the oil, the pump is not removed and cleaned

It's like changing your engine oil and leaving the old filter in, absolute nonsense if you ask me

Because it would be able to use a normal diff without an electronic clutch. I said that because I’m not a fan of the over technical solution to awd and transverse engines. It’s only awd when the Ecu decides.

how come it can't use a normal diff at the moment?

I don’t know why they designed it that way. It is more efficient as it’s not driving 4 wheels all the time but surely that’s kind of the point of buying a 4 wd.
It’s heavier, more complex and needs regular servicing or it will fail.

Yer it was done by Audi but it looks like I will be doing it myself now to clean the pump out. Cheers.

Just turned 20k on 2014 standard s3 replaced haldex pump a month or two ago after loads of wheelspin but a couple of months later it’s now been in the dealers from last Wednesday awaiting delivery of a haldex coupling unit from Germany.

Fingers crossed this is the fix after consulting technical Audi services

Hopefully it sorts it. Apparently the coupling was replaced with my rear differential so that's not my issue

What did you have to end up replacing may I ask?
