My folks have just bought a B6 S4, which is equipped with an RNS-E.

They would like bluetooth functionality.

There is currently some sort of phone cradle device mounted to the centre console, i need to investigate what that is.

I understand i need a harness, a bluetooth module/antenna and a microphone?

Theres a few versions of the module and various harnesses available.

Does anyone have any pointers on what bits are best?

As it has the cradle, do a search for the bt, if it shows up Audi uhv etc then try the pin 0000 or 1234.

The cradle was loose in the glove box, and there is two big square holes on the passenger side of the console with something behind them that i guess the cradle is supposed to attach to.

Not sure if its a factory install or some POS that someones shonked into place.

Does the cradle sound factory? if so does the mean its likely the microphone is already in place and i just need to add the bluetooth module (assuming its not already there!)

Looking at google images shows this thing:

The holes in the console certainly match that, but i dont think thats what was in the glovebox. Maybe someones removed it and fitted some sort of aftermarket phone holder or something?

Sounds like it already has phone prep/Bluetooth to me.
As above, search for Audi uhv on your phone.
There's also an option in one of the Rns-E menus to change the passcode for Bluetooth so check if that's there as well.

Do the search as yes that's OEM.

I don't think you need the cradle, mines an 03 plate S4 and mine just connected to the bluetooth and job was a gooden, did take a few times, not sure why it sort of sulked, but then afterwards it connected no bother and has been fine since, connects to my contacts just fine. try going into the settings and performing a reset to factory settings. that seemed to of helped.

Bumping this back up as after a long while i've been told its not working properly.

So the car does indeed have factory bluetooth. The original cradle says "bluetooth only" and iphone4 on the back. So i presume it was essentially a dock for the iphone which charged it, but the actual calls worked over BT.

I've tried to pair a phone, and it sort of works, the phone sees the Audi UHV, connects and pairs with 1234 pin. Then it gets weird. After a moment the music gets muted and replaced with a staticy hiss, theres a few second delay and a "bling" from the speakers. The screen also changes to say something like "insert SIM card". Sometimes, its good, it will stay connected and calls work. Most of the time though, the connected "bling" is immediately followed by another bling, and the phone disconnects.

I read somewhere (and i cant remember where) that the early bluetooth modules were a bit junk and i'm better swapping in a later one, so any info on this would be appreciated.

Cheers
Kev
