Hi. My A4 b7 2007 cut out today and stopped at the side of the road. Then it wouldn't start again. Had to get it recovered and the garage has told me the turbo has seized. Although they seem a decent bunch at the garage they've quoted me 1450.0o plus vat for a new one including oil pipes and oil change. Recon turbo about £150 less. Seem a lot for a turbo but a bit out of touch with these things since my Renault 5 turbo days!! Does this seem about right ? Thanks in advance.

Hi. I'm not sure to be honest. It's a 2.0 tdi 170bhp on a 57 plate. I had the oil pump/balance shaft problem a few months ago. Does this help? Thanks

It was my next point of call and the reason why the turbo has gone .

How did you fix ?

Think I was pretty much ripped off with it. The garage got new audi parts and the bill was about 2 grand. Live and learn I suppose. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the start of the turbo going...

Ah yes I remember , a new whole oem inferior 77mm balancer shaft module .

That's why we call 'em ' stealers ' .

About right. Just wondering if 1450 plus vat is a rip off as well. Don't expect it's far away though.

Take the car to a good independent who will be much cheaper than the stealers! Our cars stop going there once over 3 years old and out of warranty.

Thanks. 4 quotes between 1300 and 1800 so far.

If you want to keep it stock, try locating a BorgWarner importer. The 170PD uses the BV43. If you want to go big turbo, the Garrett GT2260 is an absolute beast, well known to cope with high boost (so even if you don't do an aggressive tune at low boost, it is a very reliable turbo).

No personal experience but a GT2260 would surely be quite laggy on a 2.0tdi plus it would need an adapter, hate to agree with manufacturers but the BV43 is actually a fairly good fit for a 2.0tdi engine (however if we were talking 3.0tdi+...), smaller sized garretts or hybrids will be alright around town but your either looking at adapters or sacrificing reliability.

All these larger turbos are great for embarrassing sportier cars , but 99% it's the flexibility you use most of the time , especially if town or city driving , the early turbo spool of a std or one step up size turbo is a gem .

5th gear up a hill maintaining 30 mph with very little throttle input !
