hi all

I am currently considering the options for my next car. I have had an s3 and A4 avant in the past and currently have the new A4 saloon on lease.

I am looking for something approximately 2-3 years old up to about 40k miles around £25k. I love the s3 saloon but also think the S4 and 5 door S5 could suit my needs (enjoy a spirited drive/b road commute but have young family so rear doors preferable but have another big family car). I have also thought about the golf R but would probably prefer to stick with Audi.

Could anyone with experience of these cars give me some pointers/advantages/disadvantages? Would all be similar regardarding fuel and maintenance costs etc?

Any advice would be appreciated

Cheers

Pedro

Thanks for the votes so far. Of those who have voted do you have any specific reasons why you favour one over the other or is it just personal preference?

S5 as you haven't experienced one yet although I am no lover of the sportback version

S5 coupe, why, because they are classy looking beasts.

Agree the Sportback is more practical if you have kids though.

S4/5 because supercharger :)
Also pretty easy to tune for good power

Between an S4 and an S5 I think it is a personal preference. Some like the look of a Sportback others don’t (did I say I don’t ). Between an S3 and S4/S5 it is a completely different (read wrong) comparison. Different class altogether.

Tbh, I’d go S4. S5 is fugly .

Thanks for all the replies. I agree that s3 v S4/s5 are quite different beasts, but tbh if I'm looking for a fast AWD Audi with seats for kids then I think all 3 would do the job! I'm leaning towards S4/s5, I love the look of the s5 3 door but it may be a bit of a pain on the daily nursery run and the s5 sportback isn't quite as good to look at. I like the look of the S4, I think I saw one today, red with a silver rs4 grill and it looked lovely, is this a straight grill swap?

And Am I right to assume as they are the same engine and based on the same chassis that the S4 and s5 will be very similar to drive? I have not had an s tronic before, will the car still change gear itself occasionally in manual mode i.e. do you need the s tronic remap to have full control in manual mode?

S4 to RS grill is an easy-ish swap depending on if you have the patience. A YouTube video on how to.

You can get a lot of these from eBay and below is a link to site, which we would all say is very good quality.

I believe they both drive the same but S4 drives better ;). With regards to gear change you've the red-line before the car takes over and changes the gear for you in manual mode. All Stronic remap does is raises your red-line and makes the experience a lot more exciting.

S5 or a late model RS3 8p3 for that money.

RS3 with a remap alone is what 400hp?

Yeah I would fancy a remap on whichever one I go for but wouldn't want to push the car or gearbox etc too far as it did with just a stage 1 on my 8p s3

S4/5 all the way: the power delivery of the 6-cylinder engine is in another class altogether.
