1.8t Quattro build for keeps.

Here are a couple of logs of MAF, boost and lambda. The groups are 002,115,031 and 032. See what you think.

I wish I could help but that’s just a load of numbers to me.

It takes a wee minute for to adjust to the table.

The MAF meter is reading 146mg/s at it's peak which when divided by 0.8 indicates 182bhp. This sounds about right as it is a remapped ecu although they can gain power through injection timing, so tttweakers website says.

It certainly doesn't feel like 150bhp never mind 180bhp and this I suppose would suggest a boost leak. The requested boost is approximately 2000 mbar absolute and the actual at the map sensor is about 1300 mbar. Which is 18 psi gauge requested and only 5 or so psi gauge at the engine. The value is about the value you would get with the waste gate only. This makes me think the N75 vavle is faulty or there's a boost leak somewhere. Checks to perform are a log with N75 disconnected and make a home pressure testing device to find a leak.

The lambda values are being held a lot tighter to what they should be. -1.9 additive and 4.7 multiplutive. They were 5, I think and 24.5 which is close to maxed out before.

The 1.99 in group 031 is indicating very lean but this is on the over run which a fella from work who builds engines assures me is ok.

The story so far is:

Lamdba is sometimes reading ok and next it's reading solid 0.727.

Boost pressure drop 17705 is present at idle were requested and actual are at atmospheric pressure value. I'll have to make an adaptor pipe to pressurise the system and check for leaks to assess if ECU is bad or not.

I will have to do all the basic settings tests and readiness tests to get conclusive results and not this ok but not ok nonsense.

The car broke down again on the Mrs. The car stopped with 1/4 tank or so and the reservoir was so low that the pump had put a load of air up to the engine which released, phifffffffffffffff, when I took the send and return pipes off to open up and see what was what.

So I currently don't know what to do.

Has any one ever had this experience with their Quattro? I was pulling out of a t junction, turning right and was giving it the beans on take off with about 4500-5000 rpm (wasn't looking) at the launch.

The car went forward but instead of pulling cleanly in the turn it pulled the nose across the road and towards the kerb, I had to lift off. I could have swore I herd the inside tyre slip/spin just before I lifted off and the steering wheel was turned at this point.

I thought the whole point of Quattro was no slipping of the tyres and grip and go.

Probably diesel on the road. It’s ironic they want XXmpg but fill it up to the point where it runs out at anything approaching a corner.

Have you found the solution to this conundrum?

Not as yet. Mot test on a wee Ibiza I had sitting this Thursday. The Mrs needs it for the school run. Then I can get peace to look at it. Have to work the holidays too. Musts needs, 27 machines to get out before Christmas. De-icers need out by the end of this week coming then on to my favourites, 6000s.

I need to pressure test the fuel delivery as it can cause confusion with diagnosing the other faults.

I got a set of coil packs to swap over to eliminate those as faulty but as of yet not done this.

I've figured out the wheel spin feeling. Tonight on full lock to the right same as last time and this time at low speed, 3-5 mph, I could feel the inside wheel on the front fighting against the other and slipping/scrabling on the wet surface. I did hear a knock from that wheel a while ago. I thought it sounded like a top mount but either way this sensation could be down to the wheel alignment needing set.

The Ibiza passed the MOT so the Quattro is off the road for now until I can isolate and assess the systems for values and do a proper diagnosis.

Took a reading of all faults and log of lambda for block 031 and 032. The misfire was happening once she warmed up to 55-60 deg celcius then they abated again. The thermostat must be stuck open as she took ages to get to this temperature and didn't want to go past it. The idle also worsened when warming up. It also evened out once I reset the fault codes and the fuel trims.

The fuel level in the instrument section was reading 145 ohms and 25 litres and then 80 ohms and 0 litres then back up. The senders where reading fairly consistently though when I put the meter on them. Strange one as the clocks are definitely ****** but the ecu should still be able to read the senders correctly. If I knew what pins in the loom that the fuel sender wires came back to I could put a resistor inline and see if the ecu is seeing a consistent value. Then measure the systems resistance to determine if it is faulty or the ecu is faulty.

Work has begun again on the quattro.

I put a boost gauge on the manifold tee'd into the fpr line and she is pulling a vacuum on idle and it gets stronger with a couple of throttle blips then allowed to idle again. When the throttle is blipped it goes from vacuum to 0 psi gauge. When the engine is switched off vacuum lasts 2 to 3 seconds, not sure how long it should hold vacuum once the engine is switched off. She made about a bar of boost at 3000 rpm full throttle in second gear but check light was on and boost or something was being cut by the ecu.

I have to double check the new and old looms to see if the lambda wiring is happy with where it is going to.

Does anyone know the difference between the grey and blue injectors apart from the colour?

I hate it when people lie to me. I asked the fitter of the lpg in the donor car if they drilled and tapped the intake manifold on the car and they imfatically insisted that the manifold was removed from the car for that task so how come the edge of the port on the head has a chunk out of it. Furious, I think I might shove it up his left nostril sideways.

So the intake manifolds are off both cars and I'll transfer the nozzles off the old manifold to the quattro.

I think I'll replace the crankcase elbow and t piece that come out of the block and I need a new thermostat.

The quattro clocks won't allow the car to start but are fully functional in respect to fuel gauge operating. Is it possible to remove the immobiliser chip from one set of clocks and put it into the other set of clocks. They were extremely difficult to match ecu, keys and clocks so I would honestly prefer to do the soldering or just buy a matched set of clocks, keys and ecu.

I could only find one source on intake manifold vacuum decay rate and it suggested approx 1.8 seconds in a progressive manner so mine sounds about right.

I'm going to pressure test the intake system myself then maybe smoke test but I'm leaning very much towards a knackered ecu as it's reading fault code 17705 boost leak when no boost is being requested on the idle and it comes up immediately after the fault codes are cleared.

Have you got a spare map sensor, it's on the top of the intercooler?

I've swapped in a spare one already but I have a bike pump with a gauge on it so was going to try and blow up the intake manifold lol and see what readings I get. I'll put an adapter tube into the pipe coming off the turbo compressor outlet. The adapter tube has a tyre valve on it.

Quattro has been off the road. The cordoba spat the diff in the gearbox and I thought it was time for her to go to the big scrap heap in the sky. I got a Volvo s40 115 Bhp tdi to replace her, miss her so.

Quattro is in limbo with a bit of work to go yet. Intake manifold is off for drilling and tapping, just haven't been able to get stuck back into it.

I done a bit of work a few weeks ago swapping the two rear doors over from the donor car and done the last one, front passenger side, today.

Work to do is finish gas conversion, hands free and standard radio, dash cam, cruise control, cb radio install, front mount, k04 turbo, remap, 3" tip, boost oil pressure and egt gauges, good clocks and fix running issues, freshen headlamps. Swap door lock barrels between donor car and Quattro.

Totally unthread related. I saw a dark metallic blue saloon A6 c5 the other day as I was turning right from a slip lane and waited for them to pass me on the inside. I had spotted the Quattro badge on the grill in the rear view mirror from a hundred yards back. As it passed I started to salivate. It was a 2.7 twin turbo. I was contemplating following them.

Got a wee bit of work done.

Suit hanger not coming down. Removed and fiddled with the spring and working ok now.

Drilled and tapped the intake manifold but broke a barb/nozzle so need to order a few spares.

All doors are swapped over now with all working regulators and the door barrel swapped so ignition, boot and drivers door all match.

The interior needs a wee tidy up and so removed the gear stick gaiter and gave it a clean with auto glym interior shampoo and the bottle may be stinking on the outside but it’s what’s in the inside that counts.

I’ll be putting this armrested centre console in instead of the standard one.

I rescued my cobra Daytona bucket seats from the cordoba but the subframe spacing doesn’t fit the Audi seat tracks and I fancied trying to make them look factory by bolting them to Audi seat base frames. This is how I’ve got on so far but need to do a bit more fettling, welding and bolting and put the plastic trim on and resistor in the loom to replace the airbag.
