Can anyone tell me why I cant see the low oil warning light when I press the check button and the dis goes through and checks everything?

I get the oil pressure warning oil can in red but not the yellow low oil level oil can

Also how much oil is needed to top up from the oil low light coming on to getting it on the max mark on the dipstick?

Cheers

Forgot to say its a 2.0T special edition

Lol there is nothing wrong with my oil pump

Read my question again, im asking why the dis dosent show the oil level symbol in yellow when you press the check button

It cycles through everything else, i.e bulbs, washer bottle, brakes, oil pressure (oil can in red) etc... but it doesn't show the check oil level symbol (oil can in yellow)

Take your car manual u have everything there...it should blink 3 times then disapear if im not wrong...it could be the oil pump but its probably not...could be an oil slug to...i recommend checking the sensor for oil marks if thats ok then I strongly recommend changing the oil ASAP and check the oil pressure in the pump just to be sure...common issue on higher milage cars...it happend to me last month...my car has 206000km

Oil pump is fine, whole engine is fine, i changed the oil 2000 miles ago

I'm currently seeing how much oil is being used from the max to the min mark on the dipstick (1400 miles so far and its still just above the min mark)

I wanted to make sure the low oil level warning light would come on when its time to top up so i went through the dis check (button on the clocks) and it checked everything (all ok) but i didn't see the yellow oil can to signal that the oil level is low

rule number 1 with this engine is that you never rely on the DIS for oil level and oil topping up, ok use it as an advisory function but allways check the oil level on the dipstick manually and on a weekly basis as an absolute minimum requirement as the 2.0tfsi does use oil and it can be a lot depending on how the car is driven, never rely on DIS to tell you what the oil level is , that is a fast track to engine failure without prior warning and a lot of other members found out the hard and expensive way, only takes a fw mins to pop the bonnet and check it manually, this engine can use upto 0.5 ltr of oil per 600miles and that's audi's data .
From min mark to max will be approx. 1 ltr , " DO NOT " let it get as low as the minimum mark if you want your engine to carry on working safely ,halfway should be as low as it is allowed to drop to, then fill with 0.5 ltr of oil.

Thanks, im well aware of the oil usage, oil pump issues etc... im not relying on the dis to tell me the oil level is low (Ive been checking the dipstick regularly) i just wondered why the dis didn't show the low oil level sign when i pressed the check button on the clocks

It looks like ill be getting around 1500 miles between top ups which is ok

I don't know, hence why im asking

It would seem strange for it to do the oil pressure check and not the low oil level check

the yellow low oil light will only illimunate if the oil is below the minimum level required for the engine , if it doesn't come on then either your oil level has not reached the required point of activation min mark or below , or you have another oil level related issue if the oil is above the minimum required activation point for the yellow oil level alert.
Running the check in DIS will be the same , unless you have a problem with the oil level sensor or its below the activation point it wont illuminate.

also depends on if you are checking with the engine cold , warm or hot as the level will vary with oil temp.
Just because the dipstick shows on min that does not mean the low oil light will illuminate straight away as it may not, it may need to drop a small amount more or if the car is not level it may have an effect, both the dipstick and low oil light warning are approx measurments , they are very close but there is a small amount of possible variation still possible which is why one should check it regulary and with the engine warm not hot or cold as the readings will be incorrect .

So basically the dis wont check the oil level when you go through the check procedure when pressing the check button on the clocks

Seems wrong to me as it checks everything else, bulbs, brakes, oil pressure, fluid levels etc....

Can some of you run a dis check and see what comes up in your car?

it does but only comes on if the oil is low, I tried mine and it doesn't come on and my old bus is working just fine.

Cool cheers

We got there in the end!

its just a sensor after all , not like a lot of non dipstick cars now that do monitor the oil level, so if the oil is above the limit it wont illuminate.

So today the low oil level light came on

Ive been checking the level on the dipstick every week so knew it was due to come on soon

Topped back up to the max (1 litre) and checked the mileage since the last top up and its done 2000 miles which was a mix of being booted and just cruising around

So im happyish with that, works out to be a cost of £5 worth of oil every 2000 miles (i got 4 litres of VW specific Castrol Magnatec stop start fully synthetic for £20 on an offer)

Still don't like the fact that the car uses oil even though i know its a common thing with the Petrol Audi's

All the Bmw's, Escort RS Turbo's, Astra and Nova GTE's etc..... Ive had, they never really used a drop of oil

some cars drink oil and some don't, with this engine its normal, well yours is within audi's operating parameters , you can reduce it a bit by making sure your PCV is upto spec for a starter.
audi say normal usage can be upto 0.5 ltr per 600 miles depending on how the car is driven, if your getting 2000 miles on a litre your one of the few chap, so your very lucky.

Just remember to change the oil every 15k km..20k tops..cause if the oil viscosity gets low then the oil pump will start to bitch about it all the time
