I did my first VCDS mods today. I followed DJAlix's "A Guide to Backing Up Your Vehicle using Ross-Tech VCDS" and it was really helpful. I did the AutoScan and saved the file. I then did Long Coding Backup (whew, that took a while!) and then the Adaptation Channel Backup. So finally I was finished and ready to make my changes; nothing too adventurous, just:
  • Needle Sweep
  • Rear lights to come on with front DRLs
  • Oil Temperature in all displays
  • British Summer Time auto setting
  • Change indicator flashes from 3 to 4
  • add front Wiper park MMI item
Everything went perfectly (I think) up until the last item. When I followed the instructions to add Wiper Park, the item was added but when I tried to click on the box to activate it the tick kept going away. Then I did a further search on the forum and found that DJAlix had reported that he had one instance where the mod didn't work - on a 2015 1.4COD. And what car do I have? Yep the same!

So I thought no problem I'll just revert to the original settings. I'd kept the screen dump and the Adaptation Map so just changed the setting back to how it was:
  1. Control Module 09 - Central Electronics
  2. Adaptation - 10
  3. Channel = (13) Windshield wiper-Menuesteuerung Frontwischer
  4. Set to = Inactive
The menu item has gone from the MMI but now my front wipers and washers do not work in any position. The rears are fine but there is nothing from the front. I've checked the settings again and they are exactly how they were so I am at a loss to understand what's gone wrong. I also checked the fuse under the bonnet for the wipers but that seems fine.

Anybody got any ideas as my car is pretty useless without wipers (I do live in Devon after all!)

Can you send me over both your coding and adaptation change logs please. You will find them within your Ross-tech install location > debug folder.

The adaptation changes you have made look ok to me, although you missed changing 26NSL LA72 D26 to Daytime running light.

Am checking your long coding now.

Your long coding changes look ok also. Nothing you have changed so far should have interfered with your wipers operation. Could you send me over a copy of your 09 adaptation map please?

I can't see how to attach CSV files them here so have sent via email.

Many thanks

As usual, he has come up trumps (well, that's DJAlix not Donald!). Alex is amazing - he spends I don't how long sorting out our problems.

For the benefit of others on the forum I paste his answer to me:

Having had a look through all the information you have sent over I am unable to see what the issue with your wipers could be. All your coding and adaptations currently look to be as expected and looking at your change logs I cannot see anything that would have affected your wipers operation. Only thing I can suggest at the moment would be to open and close your bonnet (hard) in order to make sure the vehicle knows its closed. If your bonnet is open then your wipers will not function. If this works then you could have a faulty catch / sensor. If this is not the issue then I can only suggest a visit to someone like myself or Audi who can connect to your car with the official VAG diagnostic tool in order to restore your factory configurations.

And he was 100% correct - when I opened and closed my bonnet the wipers worked! Now who else but Alex would have known that having your bonnet incorrectly latched would prevent the wipers working?

So now I'm a happy bunny and feel much more confident about doing VCDS mods. The backing up of the AutoScan, Long Coding and Adaptation Maps took some time but boy was it worth it! If I hadn't done them then reversing the wiper mod and getting Alex to check what I'd done would have been much more problematic.

Alex you're a star - thank you so much.

I found this out a couple of months ago after washing my car, as the next morning my wipers didn't work.....after much panic, I found the bonnet wasn't fully latched after I'd cleaned the engine compartment!! :sunglasses:
