Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

Very nice Pro Race 1.3 . I have been looking at wheels for the TT. As I already have 2 sets of 1.2 I use on the A4 I like them, A good strong wheel at a reasonable price, not the lightest but they are less than half the price of some of the OZ offerings.

You've got it Carl!

It was Dad's fault!

What.??? mmmmeeeeeeeee. I get the blame for everything. !!!

And a lot of bodywork. I think even the S3 wings we have to go on, will need modifying.

I presume you aren't having those front and rear. The 265/660 size is current BTCC so there are plenty of secondhand tyres floating around. I presume that is where that tyre has come from.
One of the guys on the TT forum in America is running 295mm tyres on 10 inch rims on his MK1 TT. He has spaced the front wings out to try and cover the tyres as much as possible. On the rear it's not so hard to fit big wheels and tyres in.
http://www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1076178

The intention is front and rear 265's. We only have one rim and tyre at the moment for trial purposes, and yes they are from BTCC. The concern is whether they will clear the front suspension.

As dad said Carl, we will be running a square setup. We need to be able to run the same wheel and tyre all round to rotate and get the best use from all of them.

No matter how far we go with the car, everything we do will always be based around trying to keep the costs sensible and not just throwing crazy money at it needlessly.

Whilst a set of 18x10s doesn't seem like a cost saving exercise, the S 2000 slicks we've been using are getting harder and harder to source, and costing more and more. Plus they're all getting fairly old now which means they're well past their best.

We've sold off almost all our our 17" stock of wheels and tyres, which helps fund the move to 18s.

The current btcc tyres should be in circulation for the next 4-5 years, so are on plentiful supply and are never more than a year old. A really good set costs just £130!

It turns out the previous ngtc 245 650 Dunlop slick was actually designed for a 9.5" rim. But Team Dynamics, the series wheel provider didn't make a 9.5, so Dunlop opted to run them on a 10j.

A few years later, Dunlop have now decided that they can get more from the 10j rim, and designed the new 265 tyre specifically around the 10j rim.

In theory, this makes the 10j pro race 1.3 the perfect rim to couple with the 365 btcc slick :racer:

Bodywork wise, there is LOTS to be done.

My current front arches are tatty, and on the back one arch is made of rust, whilst the other is made of filler. New quarters have been on the agenda for a few years, so they're being replaced with s3 quarters, which will be pulled out wider than stock before being welded up. I've also got S3 front wings and both bumpers to add at the same time. The front wings will be done a bit differently too. Time will tell how successful my plans are

Effectively, once I've confirmed offset and fitment are correct, the bodywork will be built around the new wheels, rather than trying to make a set of wheels fit inside the existing bodywork, which would never happen with these rims in a million years!

That's all a long way off though. First priority is to get the engine finished, running, run in, then mapped.

Once it's mapped I'd like to do at least one cheap winter trackday before parking it up for the grim months and cutting the quarters off it!

I feel like the car hasn't progressed much in the last 3 years or so, so it'll be nice to mix it up a little and make some big changes over the next 6 months or so

Not forgetting of course, that with the extra power, extra grip will be very useful.
I'm going to have to learn to drive all over again. What with all that power, locking diff, new suspension, uprated springs. Oh hell.

When was the last time you drove it in anger, Al? Going to be a completely different beast for both of you to sit in, you'll have a whale of a time!

There's an aptly titled "ImgurAtWork" extension that might help. Routes you through their alternate address (IIRC replaces "imgur.com" with "filmot.org")

Slightly different method to the PB workaround, but useful to have for forum use.

A year last April I think it was, at Donnington, a favourite track of ours . Power would have been about 370/350 more likely.

I don't get enough seat time, but that will change when I move nearer. You won't be able to get me out of it.:racer:

I can see it now. Tori sees a light on in the garage, turns to Nick and asks him to investigate. He walks out, only to find you in the driver's seat making VroomTsh noises...

Will be great!

You say this, but I seem to recall at Spring Action Day you were the most powerful Vaughan on 4 wheels. You've got a while left in you yet, Al!

BigAl may put on the pretence of being a little slow on his feet these days, but don't let it fool you, he's a ****** hooligan still  in the best possible way!

He's also responsible for teaching me my particular brand of Man Maths, whereby the best way to save money is to spend some more. It seems to have done him well all these years, so I'll be sure to carry on the family tradition :racer:

Back in the real world, I'm trying to put together a list of all the OE part numbers for all the Genuine parts I'll need for the reassembly.

This is what I've got so far, with a massive help from @Rainbird this afternoon

It's purely in the order they've come into my head, so no logical order to any of it!

Flywheel bolts N-906-650-01 x6
Plastic shift bush 1j0 711550 x1

Crush washers (me than I need but handy spares)
N0138128 x4
N0138149 x4

1.8T ex gasket 058253039L

Manifold nuts: N90200201 x 9
Mani studs: N0444115 x9
Sump drain gasket 058145757A
Cam cover Gasket 058198025A
Cam oil seals 038103085C x2
Cam chain 058109229B
Head gasket 058103383Q
Head bolts: 06A103385A
06B198119C cambelt kit
06B109166 stud for above
VVT gasket 058198217
Oil filter housing gasket 06A115441J
Throttle body gasket 028129748

Valve stem seals I have from Bill. Cam bolt I have an ARP from Bill.

The cambelt kit is the manual tensioner version, part number from tuffty.

Water pump is 1000 miles old so I'll use again.

Clutch slave cylinder I need, but Google is not my friend right now and I can't find it on the online etka Luke linked me to! If anyone has the PN I'd be very grateful.

I THINK that's the bulk of it. If I've missed anything blindingly obvious please feel free to say!

Going to order it all up this week, then it's just a case of booking the time off and getting it built!

when work banned loaded.com and then uploaded.com you could use anonymouse.org to see anything - wrapped in a proxy.

The issue appears to be with the deployment of the SSL certificate it might be using a generic Vodafone certificate for the wrong domain?

Tethering from a Vodafone device per chance?

so not only are you converting to a big boy turbo but also a custom widebody for BTCC tyres, lolz.

Its only £10k away from track only duty with a straight cut whiney seq box, IDF tubular control arms, IDF tubular subframe and those fancy racing hubs......

I keep expecting to see you've bought another A3 as a daily while this one gets built :racer:

Just caught up with this Nick. If you need a hand with the metal work when the time comes to cut up the bodywork I'm always happy to pop up to see you guys and lend a hand/tools.

Cheers Robin, I very well may take you up on that offer!

My grinding, cutting, and shaping skills are as good as any, but my ability to stitch metal together just isn't there yet!

The front end plans I have shouldn't involve any welding, but the rears will involve lots!

Please send funds to my PayPal account and I'll make it happen

It's a fair bit going on, but it'll be in stages. Engine in and complete first.

after a few stagnant years I think it's time it moved on in a few fairly large jumps!

Well I use Vodafone broadband as it is 76mbit for £26 with no line rental but unless the router defaults to a generic client certificate when the server certificate is no good, as it is "issued to"

either way the problem is with the imgur site not me, unless it is some new certificate not supported by Microsoft ?

So, a little time was found in the garage today. I originally nipped out to play with wheels, but after chatting to Alex (who works at Badger5 with Bill) I had a few concerns about my oil and coolant lines fitting with my modified manifold.

I'd asked Bill for a set of lines to suit a gt30 on TSR manifold, which is exactly what he supplied built on the test engine at B5.

First up I offered the head onto the block for test purposes, and bolted the manifold to the head.

I offered the turbo up, and it was immediately apparent it wouldn't sit right with the cam cover in place:

8N43Iiz.jpg

The compressor housing fouled with this redundant lug on the cam cover, which isn't actually used for anything on my car at all.

ky4xwqT.jpg

So off it came!

8gA9QrA.jpg

A shame to grind through the powdercoat, but it's behind the engine and won't ever be seen.

With that done it fitted perfectly:

rrN3OBs.jpg

C49s6mL.jpg

So, turbo on, and time to offer up lines.

First up I installed the oil drain, and clocked the CHRA to suit:

sPRTA8w.jpg

It fitted well. I'll be adding a few clips to the block to keep it solid, and also to ensure it remains on a continous fall. it sits perfectly when held in position.

Next up I offered up the oil feed. This was just a quick test fit as I had no filter housing to check at the other end:

pNdf8dz.jpg

All good there.

What I hadn't factored in was how tight these big turbo installs are on space, and the fact that my manifold had been modified!

I offered up the front water line, and struggled to get it to sit right at the turbo core. You can't really see it here, but you can see it poking up from underneath the manifold:

aBNKw7d.jpg

Because my manifold was originally a 38mm gate, and the 44mm gate had been added, it hasn't been added in exactly the same place and shape as the current 44mm gated manifold. This means that I needed to clock my CHRA back slightly in order for the oil drain to fit and clear the extra running on my manifold, but in doing so I've made the front water line fitting too tight now instead.

It's a simple fix, I just need to cut a V-slot into the top of the drain in the right place, then fold the V closed to form the angle. I'll then pop it in the post to Bill to be welded up, and all will be well. Just a nuisance as it's my own fault for not thinking about it before hand!

It does look cool fitted though!

It's all a long way off still, bit with Oliver sleeping better I'm getting more and more time in the garage, and I think this week I have finally procured the very last of the bits I need for the big push to get the engine assembled and into the car, ready to work out what extras will be needed to plumb it in.

I keep telling myself it's all going to be so worth it in the end.

I think it will.......
