S5 Exhaust Valve Mod

It doesnt matter if you clear the error code, since once you start the engine, it will come back again. The point of clearing the error is when you take it back to service, you replug the cables, and THEN clear the error codes, so the dealership wont notice. Me, I dont care, I'll just leave it as it is.

My dealer noted that it is has been disconnected on the cars record. Not an issue.

Hold on, you only disconnected the one valve? I was under the assumption that you must disconnect on both sides.

Correct, to have all 4 tailpipes operating. The vehicle normally operates on 1 tailpipe.
On the left side the valve is before the muffler, to block both tailpipes. That is why one can't see the flap.
On the right side the valve is after the muffler, only on the right tailpipe. The flap is quite visible.
Sounds even better with panroof ajar/open.

Anyone bored with the full on noise yet??? Anyone re-connecting the connectors??

I might wait until theres an option to do it through OBII. Surely there MUST be a way to program it???

Well I'm not bored of it, its still amazing. Its a pleasant sound, you just want more of it. No drone noise on motorways, so it is very easy to live with.

I highly doubt the possibility to do this thought the ODB port, but I don't even understand the need, since its not like you weld or cut things to do it, you only just unplug it.
You can even leave the wires hanging for a while until you satisfied with the sound, or just replug them in case you dont like it. There is literally no reason not to try it :)

You can also watch my video with a pair of good headphones, it is on the first page of this thread.

I've seen your vid, it sounds amazing, but my car is leased from Audi, so dont really want to mess too much with it.

Anyone recommend a good ODBII device incase I want to play??? :D

I'd say "messing around with it" is a strong possibility through the ODB port. Unplugging and then replugging a wire is not really :)
But if you still buy ODB Eleven then you can reset the error message yourself after you replugged the cable, so then literally there is no way they can tell what you've done with it.

Just been underneath, the drivers side popped out easy, the passenger one seems jammed!

Also, what tape / protection / bung are people using???

Yeah the passenger side could be tricky, but its the same mechanism as the other one, so you can observe the one you already done.

To be honest, I've just used duct tape myself, and later when I was satisfied with the sound, I've took it to my local garage and they waterproofed it and anchored it very professionally. I don't know what they've used, but it looked very neat; also they've raised the car with the lift thing and it was like 10 times easier to access it.

Your local garage sounds VERY friendly :D I'll use some duck tape for a while and zip tie the leads up. Just worried about water getting in the electronics of the flaps :(

Yeah well I have some history with them, but I'm sure you have some friends or know someone who is better with these things than you, if you need help.

Duct tape and zip tie should work just fine, and dont worry about those flaps, even if they go wrong after a while, its still under Audi's guarantee, and there is no way they can tell you've unplugged them if you replug the cables and wipe the error codes :)

Hmmmm, will give it a proper go this week ;)

Well, the deeds been done and both cables disconnected, cable tied and duck taped. It should save me a fortune in fuel as I dont have to keep sticking it into sport mode now ;)

Lovely deep burble now :D

Good job! :) Thats exactly my thought, its enjoyable at lower revs too, so no need to hammer it all the time :)

Errrrrr, it MIGHT wake the neighbours up in the morning though when its cold?? Is it me or is it even louder when cold now??? I thought the flaps where open at cold start??? The Mrs said i'm embarrassing lol, like the days when I had a Scoob! I dont care though, I love it :D

When you start the engine from cold its louder yes, for about 15 seconds. But thats it. As for the neighbours, let them know you have a better car they do, I'd say :)
And its only embarrassing if it comes from a 20 year old Corsa, its cool from an S5 :)

I struggled and failed last weekend to disconnect either. Any hints/tips??

Drivers side SHOULD be easy, passenger was a pain for me. Feel on top of the plug and theres a small grey pin that needs pushing down, so sort of get your fingers top and bottom of it and squeeze together really hard and pull out. If you've got BIG hands, your knackered :D

Audi plug

Its a bit like above, you need to press the grey thing down. Try the drivers side first and if it comes out, all will become clear :salute:

Brilliant - thanks!

I'll get under it at the weekend and give it another go.

Actually considering 3D printing some blanking plugs for these connectors rather than taping over them.

Well, i may be the first one to revert back. Have come on holiday to Wales and the drone under load was doing my head in. Combined with the road noise if was too much. Im back to piece and quiet when I want it and Sport mode if I want to show off.

I think Audi has got it right with those flaps ;)

Too much drone?

Strange. I live in Wales, and have no problem as such. Ideally Audi should've been using the same "loud exhaust" button, to control the flaps manually from the dash, as seen on most Porsche, but obviously they wanted to keep that for their super-premium brand :(

Id love that "button", but Sport Mode will have to do ;)

Yes, drone, under light load I found the deep drone annoying after a while. I like the best of both
worlds im getting again, quiet when i want it, loud when im in the mood (or showing off)

Also, I hadnt secured one of the leads properly, and it was dangling down, a bit embarrassing :D

At first I had only unclipped the passenger side but then soon realised the dynamic/individual mode made a lot of difference until I read this and looked in the actual exhaust to see the right hand pipe still had a flap over it lol. So now I have removed the drivers side connector. Was awkward on the drivers side I found this a lot tighter to get to.

Will soon see if it gets annoying with the drone although .....I'm not too sure if it will

Maybe I think theres more drone as mines a Sportback, hence maybe more noise coming into the cabin???

Personal preference also, Im nearly 50, so a bit of a duffer now :D

I have the Sportback too, so pass. And I was in the impression that hearing only gets worst with age, not better, you must be very fortunate! :D

Nope, my hearing aint the best, and Ive got Tinnitus, so that doesnt help either :D

I've actually be playing today while out and Ive found my perfect setting, and it makes the car sound GREAT all the time

Individual Mode = Gearbox = Auto - Steering = Comfort - Engine Sound = Dynamic. When you slightly floor it, it sounds amazing! and its still quiet when tootling around like a granny ;)

LOVING my car (just wish it'd stay clean!)

Yeah, I had that setting before too. Same problem tho, only opens the flaps over 3k rpm, cant really hear the car in town and my daily commute feels boring.

Yeah, I wish it would stay clean too. What colour do you have? I found the Daytona grey I have is not too bad, with moderate amount of dirt it still looks fine, just looses the shine obviously. Black A3 I had was awful, 2 drops of rain and it looked really bad.
